Using Transcriptions

Hi everyone, I've spent a long time trying to figure this one out, so I'm looking forward to your insights.
I've recently started having our videos transcribed and keyworded. The videos are hosted on youtube and already embedded on our website. Each embedded video is accompanied by an existing keyword-rich article that covers pretty much the same content of the video, but in a little more detail.
I'm now going back and having these videos transcribed. The reason I started doing this was to essentially lengthen the article and get more keywords on the page.
Question A. My concern is that the transcription covers the same content as the article, so doesn't add that much for the reader.
That's why when I post the transcription (below the embedded video), I use a little javascript link for people to click if they want to read it. Then it becomes visible. Otherwise it's not visible.
Note that I am NOT trying to hide it from google by doing this - and it will still show up for people who don't have javascript on - so I'm not trying to cheat google at all and I think I'm doing it based on how they want it done. So my first question is: do you think the javascript method is a good way of doing it?
Question B. Does anyone have any insight on whether it would be better to put the transcription:
1. On the same page as the embedded video/article (which I am doing now), or
2. On a different page, linked to from the above page, or
3. On various other websites (wordpress, blogspot, web2.0 sites) that link back to the video/article on our site.I know it's usually best practice to put it on the same page as the video, but I'm wondering from an <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym> point of view if I'm wasting a 500 word transcription by posting it on the same page as a 500 article that covers the same topic and uses the same keywords, and I wonder if it would be better to use the transcription elsewhere. Do you have any thoughts on which of the above methods would be best?

I don't use a service - otherwise I would let you know for sure. I actually have a VA who does it for me.

If I may ask, who does your transcription work? I will have a need for those services in the future.

I don't think that you will have any problem with penalties. I think that this is strictly upside.

Thanks very much, I think will take advice from both of you. From now on I will make the transcript and article have slightly different content, still all about 1 topic.
So do you think I'm wasting my time - or worse, potentially incurring penalties - by having my existing content transcribed when the video is more closely matched to the article? It's so inexpensive for me to outsource this and it's a great task for my VA to fall back on when she's done the main tasks every day. Plus, I can upload the transcript into youtube now, too.
(I'm also interested in anyone else's advice that may be different, although these guys have obviously done a great job of answering.)

My answer to the question was based upon you already having the article and the transcript. However, the ideal thing would be to have the transcript and have an EXTRAS area with some additional details on fine points on the topic of the video and some links to related topics that were covered in the video.

All I can do is say how I would handle this. I would post the full transcript on the same page as the video and the article.
I like having a transcript because I sometimes don't understand the speaker in the video. Sometimes I want to read the words slowly and carefully. And, sometimes I am writing about the video and want to include an exact quote of fair use length.
I would not hide the transcript with java. Instead, below the video I would have an anchor text link to the transcript that shoots the visitor down the page to the top of the transcript.
I think that a big page with 500 word article, video and 500 word transcript will be impressive and substantive.

The questions you ask point right back to the above statement. This line of thinking will take you to a place you don't want to go. It is not best for your users nor for your ranking.
Offering video content is great for your users. Offering a transcript OR a summary below the video is great as well. What value does offering both provide?
My suggestion would be to offer the transcripts without other similar content which covers the same topic. If you feel the transcription is incomplete, add the additional details in bold, italics, a text box or otherwise make it stand out as additional content you are adding. This method will provide all the content which is helpful to your readers without any extra content.

Can Javascript Links Be Used to Reduce Links per Page?
We are trying to reduce the number of links per page, so for the low-value footer links we are considering coding them as javascript links. We realize Google can read java, but the goal is to reduce level of importance assigned to those internal links. Would this be a valid approach? Using Escaped Fragments with SEO
Our e-commerce platform is in the process of changing to what we call app based stores (essentially running in a browser as single page web-app) With these new stores they are being built in HTML 5 and using escaped fragments.

Currently merchants are usually running 2 stores until we launch to app site at 100%. My questions are really concerning the app stores which right now show on a subdomain but will essentially take over the primary domain. Here is an example:
app.tikimater.com and app.sportsworld.com Since I am not a developer, I'm really having a hard time understanding the escaped fragments. I'm using this but https://developers.google.com/webmasters/ajax-crawling/docs/getting-started I'm not sure what my actual urls should look like and what the canonical should be set to. Right now they have been removed but previously they had http:app.tikimaster.com#!v=1 Also, and how I should be setting up my meta information for Google so 1) pages are indexed timely 2) pages are indexed with the correct information. I am still setting the meta titles and descriptions but in some instances Google uses other info. With the new platform we are moving away from on page content (written paragraphs) but category pages would have related products embedded. Should I still be pushing to have some type of intro text, since it would solely be for SEO and not the shoppers experience. Title Attribute Length + Use
Hi, Is there an optimum character limit for attribute titles like there is for meta titles? On my ecommerce site I am adding about 280 characters product category page headers to succinctly describe what the page is such as in the example below; MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS We stock a range of mens briefs from leading designer brands that offer popular cuts and fabrics such as mens cotton briefs. You will also discover styles that are a little more risqué for those looking for something more daring in sexy mens briefs and tangas. I have added the following [title attribute] to this header text (MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS)so it displays the following title attribute text when you hover over it. My intention behind this is so that it enables me to provide visitors with access (via assistive reading software or hovering their cursor over the header text) to a bit more information, which they my find useful [title attribute text] - Mens briefs and tangas. Using a subdomain to improve rankings
I have a pretty simple landing page that at present targets several keywords. Is a good strategy to add a blog to the site on a subdomain with pages targeting individual keywords? Will this help the main domain rank? Also is the best strategy to focus on building links to the home page or individual pages on the subdomain? As long as each page on the subdomain links back to the home page it should pass link juice back to the home page shouldn't it? Thanks in advance!

ECommerce & Reviews when generated by 3rd Party uses Javascript
Hi all, I am trying to optimize our product pages and I know one of the important factors is showing customer reviews. While we have plenty of reviews to show they are collected by a third party (Shopper Approved) and the way we have been told to display them on our pages is via a Javascript. My question is, is this sufficient for search engines to be able to crawl and interpret the Javascript or are we missing out on user generated content since it is displayed via Javascript. If so are there best practices or recommendations to help us? Thank you!

Why isn't our site being shown on the first page of Google for a query using the exact domain, when its pages are indeed indexed by Google
When I type our domain.com as a query into Google, I only see one of our pages on the homepage, and it's in 4th position. It seems though, that all pages of the site are indexed by google when I type in the query "site:domain.com". There was an issue at the site launch, where the robots.txt file was left active for around two weeks. Would this have been responsible for the fact that another domain ranks #1 when we type in our own domain? It has been around a couple of months now since the site was launched. Thanks in advance.

Wordpress when to use posts or pages
Hi Guys, I have a network of EMD sites that currently use a homepage and then we have a blog page which has 5-6 posts on. Is this the best way to do it with sites under 10-20 pages? Or should we create say 3-4 new pages/categories and drop the posts relevant to each page/category in there? Thank you Jon
