Too many footer links?
-
Hi. We're working on http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/ at the moment, and I was wondering what's everyone's opinion on footer links. There's quite a lot on the page, and I was wondering if there might be a few too many.
If so, what would be the best plan of action? Remove them altogether, stick them in an iframe or in a bit of JS so they can't be crawled?
Thanks!

Thanks guys. You've confirmed what I suspected. A trim is definitely needed!

You have to understand that footer links are not a bad idea for themselves, but it is important that you don't stuff it - and you did.
I would recommend that you get rid of the brands links - instead I would place a few links with logos for the most known brands that you have. dont forget the ALT. (now I see that you have this above the footer - isn't it enough?)
Second, I would get rid of the duplicate links that you have in the category section in the footer - for example, you have the link "Men's Waterproof Jackets" both under men and under clothing.
Then I would start to think about the links - do I need all of them or can i just settle with the main categories and few subcategories.
This should cut out at least 60%-70% of the links, and then you should be fine..

Wow! Those are really tiny links! And the font is messy on my monitor. I agree that you need to do something.
What are the goal of these links?
If they are there because you think people need them then run CrazyEgg and you will probably discover that nobody is clicking them.
If they are there for SEO reasons then maybe you need to think about a navigation structure that will accomplish your goals and place them in a more prominent location.
If they are there for both SEO and people then for sure make them more prominent.
This could be a problem of how to make an SEO strategy incorporate nicely into a design.

I would recommend removing most of your footer links. All the ones under the Category and Stock headings specifically. You already offer every one of those sub-sections in your main navigation bar.
I try to keep with the idea what is best for my users is best for Google. If you do some analytical study on those links, I am willing to be they are hardly if ever used. The only way I would consider keeping them is if I learned my users were actually using them.

Internal Link Rank Flow
I've read in many articles that pages can "pass" rank to other pages internally. Is anyone aware of any well done internal linking case studies which confirm this? If my homepage has the strongest Page Authority, would linking to another page deeper into my website from my homepage boost my rank for the deeper page in Google (more so than linking to the deep page from a page with lower page authority)?

To many links on page. Big or small issue for eCommerce
On my site I have around 3k pages and about 90 categories. Most of which have a sensible number of products but some have only a few products and some have loads. if I have say 40 links on the page ignoring the producand is it a big problem if I have more than 60 products on the page? Assuming a link limit per page of 100 user wise we have filters and sorts for thme to find what they breed without issue. But simply from an seo point of view how damaging would I be to have the 23 "to many links on page issues? Worth fixing by making two categories and splitting out products even tho it would hinder the user.

Penalised due to links?
Hi, Is there a way to tell if a site has been penalised for it's links? Our site dropped last Friday, and we would like to rule out links, as we plan to move the site to our main site and re-direct the links, unless Google would punish the new url due to this. Our old site does not show any warnings for the link, and neither does our Google WM account, the only thing we have to go by is a big drop in SERP. Many thanks. Quime.

Link Profile, is the keyword ratio too high?
Hi, Our website (www.NutritionMission.co.uk) has dropped from 6 to 30 in the ranking for our main keyword (Nutritional Therapy). Pulling a spreadsheet off of all the inbound links looks like 41% of anchor text is related to Nutritional Therapy. Is this ratio too high for the new google update? There are also a lot of directory submissions from the SEO people we were paying before. Anyone point me on the right track to get some idea to how to work things out? ie. add more links to ratio of anchor text is lowered etc. Kind Regards, Ian.

Preserving Link Value
My client has an existing domain, domain A. They recently purchased and absorbed another company with their own domain, domain B. For marketing purposes company B will be rebranded as company A. They want to redirect domain B to domain A. The problem is that company B has by far the more visible domain, with 4x the number of inbound links. If I redirect domain B to domain A, what will happen to these links? I'm thinking their value will be lost.
