List of High Ranking Directories
-
Hi,
Does anyone have a list of high ranking free or almost free directories that have high search engine rankings and have an opportunity for a link or links for a personal development site in the USA?
The directories should have the following qualities:
Old Site Age
A lot of unique content (or as much as a directory can have)
A clean site
Plenty of Backlinks going to it
Facebook followers (if possible, though this might be stretching it)
high search engine rankings
I think you get the general idea. I'm looking for directories that are high ranking and in for the long haul. They don't have to be free, but it's best if it's inexpensive.
Thanks!

Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded our Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory update and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

Theo, that list is really good. I've got one idea already. Thank you.

Have you reviewed the list Theo shared? It is really fantastic.
Overall I am not a fan of directories. If I found a directory that matched the description you offered, then I would definitely be interested in it. (Who wouldn't?).
Be careful that if you do find a directory that requires payment, you are paying for your site to be reviewed as opposed to paying for addition to the directory. I would be stay away from any site that offered a money back guarantee as Google may view that as a paid directory submission.
Another site that falls under the category of a directory would be the BBB. Unfortunately their price range is somewhat similar to Yahoo.
You should check out Google Places as well.

Hi Ryan,
We're already in Dmoz, and the Yahoo Directory and BOTW are both out of our price range. How would you go about finding directories for personal development in San Francisco, CA that meet the criteria I listed above?
I think your 3 suggestions are great though. Thank you.

There are three directories I look to for clients:
1. Dmoz. It's free but can be challenging to get accepted.
2. Yahoo Directory. It is about $350 but they will cover your site in their world wide directory.
3. BOTW. The internet's oldest directory. $150.
Otherwise I look for directories specifically related to the site's location or the products and services offered.

This one might be a bit outdated, but it contains some great directories: http://www.seomoz.org/directories

Paying for directory inclusion
I just wanted to see what the general opinion was on paying for directory entries. How high should the PR be to justify paying for it? Or how much is justifiable for entry into a directory with a lower PR? I have recently submitted my site to Yahoo Directory but I have only seen my rankings increase in the Yahoo search engine. Are there any directories that Google like?

Are nofollow links really not effecting rank?
I honestly find it hard to believe that nofollow links are not being considered for rank. Take for example Google finds 2,000,000 nofollow links for a site. Are they really going to ignore that?

Yahoo Directory - Which Category?
I'm submitting a law firm's site to the Yahoo paid directory. The location of the firm is in a suburb of the large city for that region, and that suburb is so small that there is no option for it under Cities. Obviously, the client wants to target the large city, not the suburb they're located in. Wondering if it's OK to submit the site to Yahoo under the category of the large city if the business is not technically located in that city. The address is clearly listed in the footer and on the contact page. Might Yahoo reject the submission for that, or will their editors realize there's no listing for the suburb and allow it?

Are paid directories considered paid links?
I've only ever submitted my sites to tons of free directories, not the paid ones. I'm thinking of getting into a few paid directories now, but just wondering, anyone had experience with a paid directory link being treated like a paid links an penalized or anything? Has it helped you? My competitors has a lot of backlinks from paid directories, so I"m thinking of doing the same thing. But if Google thinks of paid directories as paid links, I would be better off just turning him in 🙂

Natural Link Profile - Ranking Signal?
Hi, Is a natural link profile a ranking signal? What is the value in a natural link profile? What is a (natural?) link graph? Is Majestic SEO the only company capable of visualizing a link graph? (I know the answers to these questions but I want to hear what SEOMoz has to say in the quasi-official standards of SEOMoz Q/A) Regards,
