Do you build tools meant to be shared on Facebook?

I have some neat ideas for calculators and fun tools that I'll implement on one of my sites from time to time. I'm not convinced that I am getting the most SEO value out of them however, and would love to discuss what others do.
Let's say I create a calculator that let's someone "cartoon themselves" (fictitious example). So, I'd create the tool and then I would put a button in a prominent place on the page to encourage people to share to FB. I configure my page so that the title and meta description are enticing for others who would see the story in their friend's news feed, so something like:
I just cartooned myself on example.com!
Upload a photo and see what you look like as a cartoon! You won't believe the results!
So, this gets me some traffic, but nothing has gone super viral yet. I have a few pages like this that have garnered a few links, but not nearly as many as I would like.
I promote the page on digg and other sites as well but this brings very poor returns.
When you make a tool like this, do you do a lot of promotion? Have any tips for me?
(btw...it's possible that my tools are just not as "shareable" as I think!)

While the topic is hot in the news, that is the time to submit to reddit, slashdot, digg, etc...
Your idea of commenting on newspaper sites is a good one... pick the highest traffic ones.

Awww...the poor deer.
So, here's the question. When something happens in the news that relates to a piece of your linkbait, how do you ATTACK? Commenting on newspaper blogs? Submitting to digg, etc. ?
And here's another question...how exactly does the alligator yield a sword?

Attack like an alligator. He lays on the bank of the river with just his eyes and nostrils sticking out of the water (think about the shape of their head.. eyes and nostrils stand up in positive relief When the wild deer approaches alligator waits patiently until the deer kneels to drink and then.... swiftly... the gator lunges.
For your tools... or for any linkbait.... publish it on your site and sit patiently... wait until something related to your topic happens in the news... then promote with great aggression... just like the alligator.

Facebook Timeline Apps
Hello, I was just wondering pretty much what the difference between a static HTML page for your timeline is and what the apps are. Is this something that is going to be wildly popular. What should one focus on when creating these static pages or custom apps? It seems like outreach and insights is going to be big for Timeline as well. Sending a global facebook message
Hi, This is really a social media question, hoping you can help. We have 2 facebook sites that we are going to delete. One is a group and one is a page. Here they are: http://www.facebook.com/pages/NLP-Institute-of-California/101752159860852?ref=ts and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=90698249783 How do we send a message to all people in both groups all at once letting them know of our new facebook page that we're making? Like my Facebook Page or my Facebook URL?
Like many other companies or company has a site and a Facebook page. With the Facebook like button your can either specify a url or a Facebook Page. So I don't know what would be better to get more 'likes' or if I need both? My thoughts: More people liking the Facebook Page then we can post updated to more people that will show on their wall. More url likes, I think this might have (or will have) effect on search engine rankings. The more people that like your url the higher it could be in rankings. I don't really want both as most people won't go through the trouble to 'like' both plus it is confusing. Please let me know your thoughts or strategy.

I just discovered something about Addthis shares, Twitter, and rel-canonical.
Let's say I have a page on my site with the url www.mydomain.com/page1.php?id=234. Let's say it can be accessed by the url www.mydomain.com/page-this-is-a-keyword-rich-url And let's say that the second example is what I have set as my rel-canonical. I wondered what would happen when people submitted the non-canonical url to twitter. We know that Twitter shares count for something in SEO. I didn't want things to go to waste if people were landing on my short urls and sharing them on Twitter. Well, tonight, I shared one of my own urls on Twitter. I was accidentally on the short one (not the canonical), but when I shared it via addthis the long one was shared. So, Addthis must read the canonical and use this to share. Very cool. At least to me. I may possibly be the only person on the planet that understands what I just wrote, but this is a neat discovery for me.

Viral Marketing Question: If you build a truly great piece of content, what are the best ways to seed it?
Say the site is a 2 year old eCommerce company that has this awesome clever infographic but not many blogger connections. What would be the best ways to get that content syndicated?
