Website Page Structuring and URL re writing - need helpful resources
-
Hello,
I am not technically very sound and I need some good articles that teach me how to think about and go about website pages structuring and url rewriting that is seo friendly.
I will be most obliged if some of you great seomoz-ers can pitch in with help.
Regards,
Talha

A web crawler will start at the top of a page and work it's way to the bottom, discovering links and content on the way down. The first links it encounters will be used for anchor text association and weighed more then other links to the same page. Links in content are given greater weight then links in navigation so it is preferable to have those links discovered first.
HTML code can be adjusted to position the navigation after the content. You can look at xenforo which is a forum software developer who designs their software in this manner. If you view the page's source code you will notice the navigation is at the bottom of the HTML code.
With respect to your question on content structuring, there are many pages covering this topic. In general I have two pieces of advice.
1. Have your content reviewed by an English teacher. I am not looking for grammatical corrections (although that helps too) but more along the idea of properly presenting a topic. A good header, intro sentence and paragraph, etc.
2. Examine the wikipedia approach. Most wiki pages perform the basics of SEO content presentation very effectively.

Hi Talha.
Since you are an IT company I am guessing you are asking about the general structure of URLs as opposed to the technical details of how to implement the change.
The primary change I recommed with your present URLs is to remove the technology suffix. Change http://www.zigzagsolutions.co.uk/jobs.html to http://www.zigzagsolutions.co.uk/jobs. Also for the home page drop the index.html.
These changes make your URL shorter and friendlier in appearance. You also benefit from more stable URLs. If you later decide to change your web pages to php or another technology, your existing URLs can continue to work without needing to redirect your whole site.
For web page structure, can you offer a bit more detail as to what you are seeking? Are you looking for technical details such as how to structure your html? An example would be placing your navigation code at the bottom of your HTML so search engines see your content first. Or are you asking about how to present your content?

I assume you are talking about Mod_rewrite with apache.
Apache's rewrite would be a good start http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/rewriteguide.html. You say you are not technically strong, but you should be able to copy details from that and just change things around. The matching pattern works on regular expressions so if you have every used this you will find the syntax makes sense. If you haven't then it can look daunting when you first start but its really not that bad and through trial and error you can quickly pick it up.
This is the full reference for mod_rewrite http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_rewrite.html.
Alternatively once you have decided on your friendly URL to actual file mapping, post those in here and I am sure people will be able to help you create the rewrite rules

Car Dealership website - Duplicate Page Content Issues
Hi, I am currently working on a large car dealership website. I have just had a Moz crawl through and its flagging a lot of duplicate page content issues, these are mostly for used car pages. How can I get round this as the site stocks many of the same car, model, colour, age, millage etc. Only unique thing about them is the reg plate. How do I get past this duplicate issue if all the info is relatively the same? Anyone experienced this issue when working on a car dealership website? Thank you.

A few pages deindexed from Google .. PLEASE HELP!
My client has a fairly new site and we were agressively building content to the website. It is an ecommerce store and we have got a blog as well. We guest blogged in a few places and wrote 3-5 articles a day. Last few days, i noticed 3-4 pages that we were building links to got deindexed. What could be the reason? We weren't using any bots to build links, only a couple of it around 5-10 links to a page. Google WMT is not showing any messages and no manual action is seen. What could be the reason? I've submitted those URL for reindex and so far nothing seems to work. Any idea? Please help.

Page authority old and new website
Dear all, I tried to find this question using the search option but cannot find the exact same problem. This is the thing: I launched a new website in January, replacing our old website that did pretty good in the SERPs. The old website is still running on a subdomain old.website.com and the new website is on www.website.com (www.denhollandsche.nl) Both sites are indexed by google right now, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing. For our main keyword, the page on the new website has an authority of "23" and the exact same page (some minor differences) on the old website still has an authority of "30". Both currently are on the second page of google while some time ago, they where still on position 2/3/4. My question is: if I would take down the old website and make a 301 redirect for the old page with P/A 30, to point to the new page with a P/A 23, will the p/a of this new page take over the P/A of the old page? What effects can I expect? The reason the old website is still running is that google images still shows images from old.domain.com in stead of images from the new website... Thanks for your help guys!

Writing of url query strings to be seo frinedly
I understand the basic concepts of url write and creating inbound and outbound rules. I understand the creating of rules to rewrite url query strings so that it’s readable and seo friendly. It’s simple when dealing with a small number of pages and database records. (Microsoft Server, asp.net 4.0, IIS 7) However, I need to understand the concept to handle this: Viz the following: We have a database of 10,000+ establishments, 650+ cities, 400+ suburbs. Each establishment can be searched for by country, province, city and suburb. The search results show establishments that match the search criteria. Each establishment has its own unique id. Each establishment in the search results table has a link to the establishments detailed profile aspx page. The link is a query string such as http://www.ubuntustay.com/detailed.aspx?id=4 which opens the establishments profile. We need to rewrite the url to be something like: http://www.ubuntustay.com/detailed.aspx/capetown/westerncape/capetown/campsbay/diamondhouse which should still open the same establishment profile as the above query string. I can manually create a rule for this one example above without a problem. But there are over 10,000 establishments, all in different provinces, cities and suburbs. Surely we don’t manually generate a rewrite rule for each establishment? The resulting .htaccess will be rather large(?!) Therefore my questions are: How do I create url rewrite rules for dynamic query strings that originate from a large dataset? How do I translate the id number into the equivalent <country>/<province>/<city>/<suburb>/ <establishment>syntax?</establishment></suburb></city></province></country> Do I have to wire-up the global.asax so that every incoming requests extracts the country, province, city and suburb based on the establishment id which seem a bit cumbersome(?). If you’re wondering how I currently do it (it works but it’s not very portable or efficient): For each establishment which is included on the search results I simply construct the link url as: http://www.ubuntustay.com/detailed.aspx/4/Diamond%20House/Camps%20Bay/Cape%20Town On the detailed.aspx page load I simply extract the record id (4 in the example above) from the querystring and select that record from the db. Claude, what I’m looking for is advice on the best approach on how to create these rewrite rules and would be grateful if you can have one of your SEO friends lend their advice and experience. Any web resources that show the above techniques would be great. I’m not really looking for simple web links to url rewriting overviews…I have plenty of those. It’s the detail on the specific requirement above that I need please.

Website of only circa 20 pages drawing 1,000s of errors?
Hi, One of the websites I run is getting 1,000s of errors for duplicate title / content even though there are only approximately 20 pages. SEOMoz seems to be finding pages that seem to have duplicated themselves. For example a blog page (/blog) is appearing as /blog/blog then blog/blog/blog and so on. Anyone shed some light on why this is occurring? Thanks.

Well, I need some help, advice, something.
Hey all, I'm new to the SEOmoz thing but I like it so far. I think I have my site listing so messed up that it's effecting my rank. I have 3 domains. 1.) rt112media.com 2.) route112media.com 3.) route112.net. Each domain was purchased through GoDaddy.com and still remain there. I have my own hosting account which I was registered as rt112media.com with route112media.com and route112.net listed as add on domains. Technically, I would like for my main site to be route112media.com for everything. However when I registered the site as rt112media.com I didn't know the issues I would have as far as different domains so I registered with rt112media.com as my main domain name. Anyways, as of now I have rt112media.com as my main domain through my cpanel hosting.I have both domains route112media.com and route112.net set for 301 wildcard redirects to rt112media.com on my hosting account and my GoDaddy account. When I started my WMT account I didn't really know which domain to use cause I figured I could link them all to one. So, I signed up as routet12media.com. After a little while I realized it was not recieving anything because everything was being redirected to rt112media.com Anyways both addresses have been crawled and indexed so they are showing as two. So, I requested to change the route112media.com address to rt112media.com in WMT. That was about 2 weeks ago and it is still pending request. I'm not having further problems with WMT because of the www.rt112media.com vs http://rt112media.com. I am the verified owner of both but I can not switch the www.rt112media account to show the non www. account as the main one because I have the other pending. My site is still being crawled as 2 versions rt112media.com and route112media.com. So what is my best option? And what would be the worst cause scenario if I wanted to start completely over using route112media.com as my main domain with hosting and all. Sorry this was so long I just wanted to explain my situation. I'm lost. Any advice would be appreciated! http:/rt112media.com
