Directories are Paid links right ?

How are directories ok for buying links ? How can the funds be claimed to be used to review your submission when everyone knows you are basically buying a link ?
What experiences have you had god and bad with directories ?
Is it a free for all any directory will do or should you be more selective in your approach. If so what are the signs to look out for on a top quality directory.

I'd do 5-10
-
It just seems a real grey area.
I think you may have hit the nail on the head there...;)
-
exactly the reason I bring this up is recently on open site explorer in the industries I am working its time and time again directories. They are passing on good authority also so its a difficult situation.
Why should my clients not get the listings and their rivals benefit from them. Its just seems like an injustice.

Google clearly understands this deal was primarily designed to bypass their policy and views these directories as paid links. Use of these sites can lead to penalties.
This may be an often asked question, however here goes; If Google penalises sites for paid links, paid directories, etc what is there to stop competitors buying links to a site to get you penalised. How can Google tell the difference? Or is more likely that they will stop any linkjuice passing from these sites which is not quite the same as a penalty. You would still have the linkjuice of your legitimate links**. Indeed as effect from these paid directories is little in any case, loss of their linkjuice might have little or no effect.**

thanks Gareth I will take a look. When you say moderation are you saying 10 - 20 top quality directories .

BOTW is is good one I agree it just seems Ryan there is a constant walking on egg shells with Google. It reaches a point where you feel like you can't add your site to anything ?
The thing that gets me is all the sites we research all have directory listings that would be classed as outright paid links. So it reaches a point where I think if its ok for those guys so why should we do it ?
So you can't buy directory links because of them being against the guidelines and you can't pay for site reviews as this is seen as a way around the guidelines ? So what sort of directories can you do ? It just seems a real grey area.
-
Everything in moderation I say. I would only get a few of the top ones. I created a list and looked at the domain authorities if you are interested:
-
I've had bad experiences using directory submission where it actually caused the website to get its rank lowered. However, as mentioned, Yahoo, BOTW, and DMOZ directories are known to be good.
-
Some directories offer a clear deal: pay us and we will list you. That deal is a violation of Google's terms. Google offers a site so users can report any violations: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/paidlinks?hl=en
Some directories offer a less-clear deal: pay us to review your site. If we approve your site you are listed, and if we don't approve your site then your money is refunded. Google clearly understands this deal was primarily designed to bypass their policy and views these directories as paid links. Use of these sites can lead to penalties.
There are a few high-quality directories which have legitimate standards and charge a fee for a site review. If you pass, you are listed and if you do not pass, you are not listed. The fee is gone either way as it was for a review of your site, not a listing. Sites such as Yahoo Directory and BOTW are the two most prominent directories of this nature that come to mind. There are many niche directories that offer a similar process.
In short, paying for directory links is a bad idea. If a client has funds and is starting a site then I can see the value of listings in Yahoo and BOTW initially. Niche directories can offer value. Otherwise, the only way I would suggest paying money to be in a directory is if you felt the actual traffic you would receive from the link was worthwhile. If your client sells wines and you were gaining a listing in a wine directory that was actually used by people interested in purchasing wines, then that listing could pay for itself.
Another point would be certain groups such as the BBB may offer a value for being a member. The BBB badge on a site is a trust symbol which has been proven effective to increase conversions.

Should I disavow these links?
Hi all, I have a ski website that I am currently performing a toxic backlink audit on. I have noted that a lot of the links being flagged as toxic/spammy by the tool I am using seem to be the same/similar sites with different URLs. The sites are vaguely related to skiing (relating to helicopter travel options for travelling to ski resorts) but it is concerning me that there are so many of them and they are being flagged as so toxic.

Do you think it is worth disavowing these? Or contacting the owner to ask them to remove the link? I have included an example of some of the links below. https://www.cannes-helicopters.co.uk/index.php?menuopen=21&showcontent=5
https://nice-helicopter.co.uk/index.php?menuopen=21&showcontent=5
https://monaco-helicopter.co.uk/index.php?menuopen=21&showcontent=5 Slightly different site but same favicon icon:

Self linking
There are 10 links on page that point to this page where they exist (link to the page itself). Does it influence on ranking?

Back links off the back of a paid sponsorship deal
Hey Mozzers, I am in need of a bit of advice please? I work for a Gyms chain in the UK and we are sponsoring a major sporting event next month. As part of the deal we get a dedicated webpage and backlink from their high authority website. We do not have a logo and multiple backlinks in the footer on every page of their website, so to my knowledge Google will not necessarily regard this as a paid backlink right? Is there anything in the algorithm that is able to distinguish between the aforementioned backlink and a natural one? Just wondering if our domain is linking to receive the equity or not? Regards Ben

What is a natural link?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to better understand what is meant by a natural link and would appreciate any assistance. Doing some competitor link analysis I've noticed a web developer who has created a directory for all its customers. This is not a directory in the traditional sense of being of use to an end user, but to my untrained eyes, it looks like an internal directory used solely for the purpose of link building. For all I know this might be perfectly good practice in the industry, but as a beginner, I'm attempting to get an understanding of things. My question is, what precisely is meant by a natural link? If the above scenario is all ok, whereby there are businesses in the same field of work, but ultimately could be in any given location, on a directory, are they natural links? Do these kind of directories that don't service an end user, exist if the common feature between them is say location only, or an seo agency only? Appreciate I could be completely out of kilter on this, but it seems the benefit on SERPs is pretty significant for something that seems pretty "unnatural" to me? Any guidance would be appreciated...tom

Why does my site only have 4 internal followed links/internal links?
When using Open Site Explorer my site is winning in many categories but lacking in others as compared to competitors. I intend to improve on this but am a little confused by the extremely low number of "internal followed links" and "internal links" at just 4. My competitors have much more than that. Does this mean links to the root domain? Total internal links? I have many internal links so I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. What four internal links are getting noticed? I just went through and changed all the links that went to index.html to link to the root domain at www.njlimocarservice.com as I just found a Q&A that indicates this was better. So as of Wed at 5:45 PM all my links to the homepage went to index.html and not the root which is no longer the case. Not sure if this matters. At the same time I also just put a 301 from index.html to redirect to www.njlimocarservice.com. Any help appreciated! h9QuF.png

Outbound links
Hi there, i know inbound links are what hold the main value in terms of link building but if i have an inbound link from a big company such as ITV or BBC and they have put an article on their site linking back to mine, would it be beneficial if i made a comment on my site and then link back to their article or will this not really help? Sorry as you can tell im very new to seo! thanks anthony

Does the ratio of external nofollow links to external "do follow" links matter in terms of SERPs ranking?
My site has an external link nofollow:dofollow ratio of approximately 1:1 That is, there are about as many nofollow external links as "do follow" external links. I have an impression that the ratio of no-follow to "do follow" links is a factor in the way that our website shows up in SERPs. I have the impression from reading a variety of sources, and from looking at Seomoz, that calculate "trust" factors as if they mattered (in SERPs), that seem to value a relatively low nofollow:dofollow ratio. Am I correct about that? Thanks,

Using an SEO Agency to build one-way links for you via link exchange
There are a number of SEO agencies which offer link building as part of their SEO offerings. I believe they build one-way links to the client site, by offering another link in exchange to the liking site. So, if the client site is "C", and link is being requested from site "A", the site "A" owner is offered a link from site "B" in return. Is this a good and/or recommended practice?
