Sudden rank drop for 1 keyword
-
A page of mine (http://loginhelper.com/networks/facebook-login/) was ranking in the top 10 for keyword (facebook login) and has been for at least 2 months, moving between 5th and 10th.
Suddenly in the last 3 days the rank for the keyword dropped from 7th to 46th, yet none of the other keywords have been affected (they target other pages) and their ranks have continued to improve.
I am trying to figure out what caused this sudden drop in the ranking of 1 page (the page has quality mainly text based content and isn't in the least bit shallow or spammy)
I have been thinking perhaps a crawl or server error may be to cause leaving the page temporarily unavailable or with a big load time... Otherwise what could cause one page to drop so much so quickly whilst other pages improved their rank?

Thanks for the input guys. I have taken your suggestions on board and made some additional optimizations and edits as well. I will let you know how it goes.

Joshua,
My goal was to respond to your question and bring issues to your attention. I apologize if the reply seemed harsh.
When I view your site, I like the content, the images and the idea behind the site. I see you filling a popular niche very well. The biggest concern I have, which could potentially cause a bounce in SERPs, is your anchor text.
I cannot say with certainty this is the root cause of your issue. I can say it is a big concern to me which relates to this issue. When a particular search term is entered into Google, their job is to return the specific pages most relevant to the given search query. Your site is focused on various "facebook login" issues with pages such as "facebook login approvals" and others that are very closely worded to your money phrase.
If "facebook login" is the most important phrase for your site, and the /facebook-login page is the target of that phrase, you need to send a very clear and consistent message to Google on this topic. My concern is when I examine your sidebar right now, I see the same "facebook login" anchor text (exact phrase match) five times.
Three of the times where the phrase appears the link is to the correct target page. Once it appears in the tag section as a link to the http://loginhelper.com/tag/facebook-login/ page. I would recommend removing that tag. Having a tag link identically phrased to your most valuable page can lead to confusion. This tag anchor text is telling Google that when a user searches for "facebook login" the tag page should be the target. While you can also ask "I have three links going to one page, and one link going to another so don't the three links win?". That is not necessarily how it works. It's an issue which I would suggest correcting immediately.
The same goes for the "facebook login" anchor text which links to the Ghack page. You can still offer a link to the page, but don't use anchor text related to any terms from your site.
Do you guys think these factors could be related to the sudden drop for this page (no other pages on the domain are having issues)
It is definitely possible the two identical match anchor links are causing this issue. I can only say it is possible, not that it is a sure thing, but it is the most glaring issue I noticed which could cause this problem.

I don't know if he was harsh, every site can be improved, it's the nature of the changing beast.
Large chunks of the content appearing on other sites is a big problem and could explain drop if Google has recently crawled/valued those sites.
I had already checked your KW density for "facebook login" and it is reasonable (not over the top). That page is in the index so whatever your XML sitemap problem is, at least it is not keeping the page from the index. If all other pages on your domain are okay and the XML sitemap problem was not related only to this page (which I am assuming), then that is obviously not the culprit.
If you're content is going to be syndicated/"borrowed", you might want to add the rel="author" etc. info to your site.
Q: Do you see any of the other websites' pages (with the copied content) ranking for your term?
Q: You didn't answer about link tracking. Here's what I am getting out here..
Hypothetical: let's suppose a few weeks ago you have 40 external links to that page. Let's say of that 40, Google may value 12. Of those 12, perhaps 2 have great authority, relevance, PR, etc. according to Google. And then, for reasons unknown, those two sites have removed the links to your page.
So if you have before/after tracking of inbound links, you might see a changes that wave a red flag. It's just one more thing to check.

Ryan does (harshly) make some decent points although I am already very familar with all the stuff listed in the seomoz seo guide....
No onsite changes were made in the last few months at all and no blackhat linkbuilding has been done.
Inspired (and annoyed - haha) by Ryan response I decided i would actually go through and do an onsite audit of the page and did find some disturbing things...
The biggest was that large chunks of the content appear on multiple other websites. I am also concerned that the actual content may be seen as having overused the term 'facebook' and also the xml sitemap was broken..
Do you guys think these factors could be related to the sudden drop for this page (no other pages on the domain are having issues)
-
Joshua, I mention html validation and Ryan makes some points on ways to improve the site, but I'm looking for causation for the drastic drop in rankings for that phrase and that is what my previous questions are about.
While we wait for your answers, I will assume for a minute that you are absolutely positive that no changes were made to that page or the site recently and your inbound links remain constant, external site referrals and other analytics/log data do not indicate any problems.
Which essentially leaves you with link devaluation (algo change) or being dropped from the index for a bit. Unfortunately your only course of action would be trying to improve site SEO and building & improving external indicators to help you get back up in the rankings for that phrase. If that page was crawled and had errors or was not found and dropped from the index, time should help your cause.
-
Joshua,
Your site has many SEO issues. My recommendation would be to either hire a SEO professional to work with your site, or sit down with the Beginner's Guide to SEO and take it one chapter at a time, applying what you learn to your web pages.
There are numerous possible causes for your page's bouncing in SERPs. You say this is your site's money page, but you definitely do not treat it as such from a SEO point of view.
You want this to be your site's "Facebook Login" page, but on your home page you present that exact key phrase "Facebook Login" on your sidebar in the "Links" section. This link directs users to a page on another site. That perfect match anchor text is an indicator to search engines you want the other page (http://www.ghacks.net/2009/11/18/facebook-login-phishing-and-account-hacking-warnings/) associated with the term "Facebook Login" instead of the page on your own site.
Another suggested change would be change your page's title from a H2 tag to a H1 tag, and remove the link. There is no reason to link a page's title to the same page it is located upon.
-
Thanks. I don't see any major issues with the page (although you have some html validation errors which should be tidied up).
Any changes made to that page/the site/.htaccess/robots.txt recently?
Do you monitor site down time, and if so, was there any corresponding down time during that period?
Did you track inbound links to the site before/after this happened? If so, any big changes?

updated with url and kw

what could cause one page to drop so much so quickly whilst other pages improved their rank?
Without knowing the page URL and keyword, we are left to guesswork. As Sean suggested, the most three likely issues are either:
1. Google has made an algorithmic adjustment which was unfavorable to that page.
2. That page has been penalized in some form. It could be there is an issue with the page's content, or perhaps a link to the page has issues and has been devalued.
3. There is a crawl or other issue preventing page rank from flowing properly to that page.
-
the site still ranks for its domain name and ranks in the top 10 for other queries - it is just this one keyword that the rank has dropped for - unfortunately it is the websites money keyword
-
Do a site: check in Google and see if the homepage still ranks #1.
Give it 2 weeks and if nothing comes back up then as you mentioned, go through crawl errors etc using W3C Validator, Screaming Frog, Xenu, Webmaster Tools and use some SEOmoz tools.
Check for broken back links and try building some new links.
If nothing changes then consider a reconsideration request through Webmaster Tools.
-
So, without any URL or KW example, usual suspects (answers) include: panda, junk link devaluation, or your page may have had tech problems and disappeared out of the index for a bit.
First two are self-explanatory. One example of the latter situation, a domain name or hosting account that is let to expire, is crawled by bots after it expires (and they find the generic registrar/host page page) and BAM! that top 3 ranking nationally for a valuable phrase is toast. I saw this happen with a client site that was down for less than 48 hours. So they went from #3 to 70ish. They are still trying to recover rankings and that was about three weeks ago.
So I would look real hard at your analytics and logs, particularly crawl logs and see if there are any anomalies.

Keyword cannibalization
Hi, I have two questions regarding keyword cannibalization. 1. I am doing the SEO for a website that sells do-it-yourself packages for heating, bathrooms, ventilation and so on for new houses or for renovations. The most important pages are the product pages (e.g. example.com/products/bathrooms) but there is also a blog divided into categories per product (e.g. example.com/category/bathrooms). The difference is clear: the product page focuses on the product itself, and the blog category page contains all blog posts relating bathrooms (tips, new materials, new innovations,...). My question is if the product page and blog category page can compete with each other for the term bathrooms (although they have different content). Does it help or is it enough to direct internal links from separate blog posts to the most important page (being the product page) and back to avoid my category blog page to compete with my product page? Another possibility would be to use a canonical tag on the category page pointing to the product page, but this actually isn't good practice because it isn't really duplicate content. Third possibility would be to no index the category page. So what is the best solution of the three? 2. A second example of keyword cannibalization can be category archive pages for webshops. If you have a category page example.com/jeans and a subcategory page example.com/jeans/women, is it useful to optimize on both pages for different terms, being jeans for the first page and jeans for women for the second, or will Google not make this distinction because the keyword are too closely related? In other words, is it useful to write content specifically for jeans for women and make a landing page for this keyword, or will this page compete with the category page that has been optimized for just the keyword jeans? In large clothing webshops, you can see for example that there is an optimized page for Nike (content, headings,...) but not for Nike for women or Nike for men. Is this just laziness or is this done exactly to avoid keyword cannibalization? Looking forward to your comments!

H1 tags and keywords for subpages, is it best practice to reuse the keywords?
So let's say I have a parent page for shoes, and I have subpages for dress shoes, work shoes, play shoes, then inside each of those pages I have dress shoe cleaning, dress shoe repair, same for work and play shoes. Would it be ok to use h1 tags like this: Shoes > Dress Shoes > Dress Shoe Cleaning Dress Shoe Repair Work Shoes > Work Shoe Cleaning Work Shoe Repair Play Shoes > Play Shoe Cleaning Play Shoe Repair Would these be considered duplicate h1 tags since cleaning and repair are used for each subpage? In certain niche companies, it's rather difficult to use synonyms for keywords. Or is it ok to just keep things simple and use Shoes > Dress Shoes > Cleaning and so on? Especially since we have urls and breadcrumbs that are structured nicely using keywords, for this example both breadcrumbs and urls read like sitename.com/shoes/dress-shoes/cleaning. Any advice?

What Constitutes Keyword Stuffing?
Greeting MOZ Community: I have been attempting to add certain keywords phrases to the home page text of our real estate web site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). When I check the keyword density and look at the keyword cloud, the frequency of certain terms appear substantially higher than they should be (see attached keyword cloud and keyword density chart. Certain terms like "office space" have a 5 or 6% frequency which seems high. Last thing we need is a Panda penalty. When I viewed the code for the home page (see enclosed), I noticed HREF tags, SRE tags and ALT tags repeating certain keyword phrases, driving up their density. I have attached a keyword cloud for the home page of a competitor and the use of language seems more diverse. Does Google take the text in these various tags into account? I know the ALT tag is important for SEO, but how about the others? Does the use of text in the tags for this page make the overall page look spammy? Also, there are text and tags for the carousel in the home page that appear in the code for the home page. If this code were somehow concealed, would we be better off from an SEO perspective? Thanks, Alan pkM7CZG 1DFFMZ0

Ranking drop for a particular page on a particular keyword
Take a look at centerforhealthysex.com/sex-addiction. For months we were ranking in the top 3 spots with this URL for "sex addiction los angeles", even reaching #1 for a while. Late last year we redesigned and developed the site to clean up the code and redirects. We also cleaned up the internal linking structure. For years we had been ranking on "sex addiction los angeles" for the home page ... bumping around the top 5 spots, but we wanted organic traffic to go to /sex-addiction. In the Fall, we saw overall site traffic rise steadily. We made few changes to the site and none to this page or links flowing back to the page once we had achieved strong ranking -- we didn't want to mess with a good thing. Then November 27th we started losing ranking on this term and a couple others. The good news is that we gained ranking on some high volume traffic terms so overall organic traffic is reasonably strong, BUT we're not ranking on the terms where we want to rank. Centerforhealthysex.com/sex-addiction is now nowhere to be found on the target search term despite fairly strong page rank. I tried redoing and resubmitting the site map, cleaning out some potentially duplicative content but to no avail. I see no issues, errors or warnings in Webmaster Tools. We have a few medium priority fixer-uppers in SEO Moz, but we've taken care of the majority of the big stuff. What am I not seeing? Thank you!

URL - Keywords
My domain name contains my top two keywords. Am I penalized if I create another page where I add my domain key words a 2nd time after the domain name along with a subcategory and the name of a state. I don't know what white hat and black hat is so I want to make sure I stay white hat. Also I didn't know it but is it true that your title shows up in your domain name?

My ranking on some keywords is getting better . Now what about geography!
Hi, I finally got a better result on my ranking on specific keyword. Now, here is what I need to do. Just to place you in context, we have acquired 2 companies in Europe since last year ( One in the UK and one in France ) and our head office is in North America. Since our servers are located in NA, I realize the ranking will be better here on specific keywords than it is in the UK and France. I actually managed to get on the first page on google North America, but I am till very var in ranking in France and the UK. Where should I start to get a worldwide ranking ? I could start on the 2 geography mentionned but is there a strategy to get ranked worldwide ? Any help would be appreciated. Best regards,

Need help/insights. Site SEO = OK, Authority BLs = OK, Rank page #1\. How to reach pos #1?
Hi there! Some doubts are confusing my head and need some assistence from you to get on the right track. I'll explain my situation and want to hear from you what do you really recommend for med/long term permanent results. 1 - I have a PR2 (.com.br) domain; 2 - I'm talking about little/med competition micro-niche keywords; 3 - I got all pages I want to, indexed (I have a well SEO constructed website with internal link building); 4 - If a keyword has average competition, I'll already start ranking in page #3 on the SERP's; For a few low competition keywords I start on page #1; 5 - I do a little whitehat link building, 1 or 2 backlinks on authority sites and then like 15 days later I came to page #1, generally on position 9/10; And then I got stucked 🙂 No more authority sites where I can get backlinks... I do some posts on the company twitter/facebook page's, but they are no follow, so I don't really now if this can help. (never see a SERP result). I did some "blackhat" stuff to see if it really work: I can say for sure the "profile backlinks" that we can buy from some sites doesn't work (maybe it's just for me). I can't see it on webmaster tool and neither my ranks changed since I bought a pack of 100 links (the links are working, I see it one by one) to test. Maybe the problem is about the domains, cause my site is .com.br and I'm buying .com profile links. I guess google understand backlinks from .com.br more valuable for my sites. Back to whitehat: I wrote some articles and posted it the right way, of course on .com.br articles sites, got it indexed and can see the backlink on webmaster tool, but no change on SERP's. (maybe this can be a long term result and I'm not seeing it yet). I'm really "scratching my hand" to do some blackhat stuff, but I don't want to lose what I already have done... I heard a lot about scrapebox but doesn't fell confortable to spam as hell a lot of blogs. I really want long term permanent results (my sites are totally whitehat/corporate sites). Can you expert guys give me some point to where I need to "walk" now to improve the SERP's? I never reached top #1 and want to try to rank at least one time to understand how this can be made... I'm thinking now to pay someone to rewrite 20 copies of an article and up it on some sites, to see if 20 can improve something. But still no confident, because it will cost like $100 for a good writer do it for me on my language. Maybe I can do better things with 100 bucks. I guess I did the path right: Internal SEO -> got indexed -> backlinking from authorities -> new articles backlinks to me (is it ok at this position or no?) -> (what next ?) I know SEO is a hard/never ending work, but what I'm trying to get cleaned on my head is the path of the work (if a right path really exists). Every word will be apreciated. What do you can suggest to me to try now? (please give me a hint to see SERP's results 🙂 if I feel that something worked, no matter how it can cost to me, but I'll pay for the work happily) Sorry if I'm a little confusing, english isnt' my first language. Thanks.
