Does running 2 domains from the same website harm my seo efforts?
-
Hi
I run a website which has 2 domains running from it. One domain has a .co.uk extension and shows products aimed at the UK market. The other domain is a .com which shows products aimed at the US market.
As both domains run from the same website, the content is mostly identical APART from the product listings as they change depending upon whether you're in the UK or US.
My reason for doing is this mainly for paid search purposes as I can have a more accurate domain depending upon which country I target. Both sites are set to encourage the bots to index it, and in google WMT each domain is targeted to its specific country.
So, my questions are,
-
Is this set-up possibly damaging my SEO efforts for either or both websites?
-
If so, would setting one domain to no-index, improve SEO efforts for the other?
Thanks in advance for any replies!
Cheers
Joe

You're welcome Joe.
Regarding those links that you mention; they could potentially cause an issue such as link spamming, which can happen when two websites send each other a lot of reciprocal links.
(Simpler solution towards the end) ~ My advice would be to remove them and make it clear on the website that those on the UK site, in the US, can visit the US site and vice versa.
As some landing pages will no doubt be deep pages (i.e. not the homepage) perhaps a widget type of box in a prominent position would help to direct visitors to the other site if they are on the wrong site at the time. EG. "If you're a visitor from the US then visit our site especially for our US customers" or such like.
With some clever coding (and use of nofollow for such links) you could get it to work that when clicked on, the visitor goes to the corresponding page on the other site.
Or alternatively, an easier solution, make sure that all those links are "nofollow" links so that search spiders don't follow them, reducing the risk of a penalty.

Simon

Thanks very much for the response Simon.
I have links between both .co.uk and .com websites on every page on my site so you can check products from either country perspective, therefore google WMT shows lots of backlinks from the alternative domain, do you think this could cause a problem as well?
Thanks
Joe

Do more to differentiate them insofar as it's possible. Interview people from different countries for the respective sites, for example.

Hi Joe
A good question. You'll find most of your answer in a video by Matt Cutts at Google http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ets7nHOV1Yo
As you are running different Top Level Domains (TLDs) then chances are that your websites and content won't be classed as duplicate, however saying that, if they are both hosted in the same country, e.g. the UK, then potentially they could be classed as duplicate, with only one of them showing up in search results.
Your best bet would be to Host the .co.uk in the UK and the .com in the US. That way, it's more likely that neither site would be classed as duplicate.
Regards
Simon

301 redirect after penalty to domain which currently 301 to the penalised domain
Hello all, As I have mentioned in another Q&A, one of our new clients got hit by manual penalty. I checked their link profile and there was a lot of black hat involved. Long story sort, I submitted a reconsiderationr equest which was not enough as it seems 99,9% of his links are bad links. We took the decision to move a newly launched web site from www.websitename.com to www.website-name.com with the latter being an old domain name with good authority and clean link profile. The problem is that at the moment the www.website-name.com is set to 301 redirect to www.websitename.com and what we want to do now is take the web site off www.websitename.com and launch (not 301 as we dont want to pass the penalty to the clean domain) it to www.website-name.com. What is the best practise for this particular case and are there any things i should pay attention to? I would appreciate your advise!

Does Google see the connection between our 2 websites?
We have a main website and we created a satellite site to support the original one with backlinks. Can I add both sites to the same Google Analytics profile? My programmer said that there is no reason to use a new GA profile for the satellite site, since Google will see the connection between the 2 websites via scripts, Google Plus buttons and other programmed solutions. So, is there a reason to use a new GA account for the satellite site (and later the new satellite sites) as well?

Domain forwarding
Hi Is it ok or bad practice to domain forward shorter more memorable snappier domains used for promoting a website to a longer domain where the website actually lives, such as: Promoting in social media profiles, emails and offline literature a domain with forwarding set up like: www.brand.com To the main website: www.brandincludingprimaryproductrelatedkeyword.com And if ok (not bad practice), since its the forwarded domains that are being promoted they are hence the links most likely to be shared on social media and other websites so will they be treated like 301's and 'link building' for those will pretty much equate to link building for the main domain (or not) ? Many Thanks Dan

Domain redirect seo
Hello, my domain www.pacomarca.com and when i start the new campaing i get this pronblem: We have detected that the domain www.pacomarca.com and the domain pacomarca.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here. my domain is in networksolutions.com. how can i resolve it? many thanks Gonzalo

Website hacked
Hi I've been asked to help a colleague with his website. It seems to be hacked. He recently received an e-mail from Google saying his adwords account was suspended 'due to high probability his site may be hosting or distributing malicious software' I just checked his source and there seems to loads of weird on code on his pages, this would not have been but on by any members of the website owners. Please image attached when we try to access his website via google search I just contacted the hosting provider - does anyone have experience with this and how to prevent such hacking in the future. The site is build using HTML with no CMS. IjW19.jpg

SEO Developers
I have a team of inexperienced SEO developers and the argument we continually have is that its a marketing role - however most of it is technical, no view state, no js, page load time, csssprite, metatags, frequency of updates to server, duplicate content via coding methodology, lioading content prior to ads, not spidering ads (IT says impossible yet google says required) etc. I looked at your referrals for developers and couldnt find any that recognized SEO as part of their skill set - do you believe tehre aer developers that specialize in this? Thanks, Michelle

Domain Forwarding and SEO
I have looked around and only saw older and contradicting responses to this question but what effect does having a domain with VALUABLE-KEYWORD.com forward to MAINSITE.com or COMMON-MISSPELLING.com forward to MAINSITE.com in terms of SEO and is it considered spammy or looked down upon
