How to remove bad link to your site?
-
Hello,
Our website www.footballshirtblog.co.uk recently suffered a major Google penalty, wiping out 6 months of hard work. We went from getting 6000-10000 hits a day to absolutely nothing from Google. We have been baffled by the penalty as we couldn't think of anything we've done wrong.
After some analysis of Open Site Explorer, it seems I may have found the answer. There is a ton of bad links pointing to us. A few example domains are:
This is nothing to do with us and so I can only assume some competitor has done this. As we were only about 4-5 months old, I guess Google has punished us.
What do we do now? This is not a situation I have experienced before and would really appreciate your expert advice.

The best way to go is to continue building quality links. These links you've 'kindly' acquired from a competitor have clearly made your link profile look worse than it should be. The fact you've got nearly 450k links coming from less than 100 domains will look a tad suspicious to G.
If you continue to build quality links, google will see that you're not getting your links from spammy sources and the other links you've been given could easily turn from having a negative effect to having a positive effect.
As it's a new site, this is the time when your link profile is watched carefully, so although it's unfortunate to have got these links, it's not the end of the world by any means. Try and get some links from sites with a high MozRank using white hat tactics.

If it was the competitor's bad links that triggered a penalty, you can try a Google Reconsideration Request and explain what happened.

Assuming that you didn't use any questionable linking practices to get your site where it was before the penalty, I would submit the site for a manual review.
If you were using some gray hat tactics, you'll have a much better chance of getting rid of those links than the ones that were so generously pointed your way. So, you time would be better spent getting rid of the links you wouldn't want them to see that you actually built vs. trying to eliminate the ones that were likely sent by a competitor. The other alternative is to blame all of the bad links on the competitor...again, assuming that you built some links you don't want Google to see.
The other option, although more painful, is to wait it out. I've seen several sites get clobbered by competitor's nasty link building tactics and after a few months they all the sudden popped back into the SERPs higher than they were before hand.
The other thing I would suggest is to make sure those links are the source of your problem, i.e. how's your anchor text? Is it over optimized? How about on-site? And how could we forget good ole Panda and it's many, many revisions. Are you certain that it didn't get hit in the 2.14x update? (I'm kidding about the numbers...it just seems like Panda is never-ending.)

Since you have no control over those other websites, you can't really do anything to get them to remove the links. But because of this, incoming links to your site will never penalize your site. If they did, you're right, a competitor could get sites penalized on purpose and point lots of links from them to your site.
What else could have caused your site to get penalized? Could one of the Panda updates have caused it? Check out the time line here and see if it lines up to when your site lost its traffic: http://www.seomoz.org/google-algorithm-change.

Redirecting an Entire Site to a Page on Another Site?
So I have a site that I want to shut down http://vowrenewalsmaui.com and redirect to a dedicated Vow Renewals page I am making on this site here: https://simplemauiwedding.net. My main question is: I don't want to lose all the authority of the pages and if I just redirect the site using my domain registrar's 301 redirect it will only redirect the main URL not all of the supporting pages, to my knowledge. How do I not lose all the authority of the supporting pages and still shut down the site and close down my site builder? I know if I leave the site up I can redirect all of the individual pages to corresponding pages on the other site, but I want to be done with it. Just trying to figure out if there is a better way than I know of. The domain is hosted through GoDaddy.

Penalized domain, starting over. 302 or just add a link that site has moved?
Hello, our .com domain got a fred update and to be honest we need to start over. Now my first idea was to 302 the domain as the penalty should not come with this. Other option is just to have a landing page saying, we have a new address its www.example.es . What would be better?

If I nofollow outbound external links to minimize link juice loss > is it a good/bad thing?
OK, imagine you have a blog, and you want to make each blog post authoritative so you link out to authority relevant websites for reference. In this case it is two external links per blog post, one to an authority website for reference and one to flickr for photo credit. And one internal link to another part of the website like the buy-now page or a related internal blog post. Now tell me if this is a good or bad idea. What if you nofollow the external links and leave the internal link untouched so all internal links are dofollow. The thinking is this minimizes loss of link juice from external links and keeps it flowing through internal links to pages within the website. Would it be a good idea to lay off the nofollow tag and leave all as do follow? or would this be a good way to link out to authority sites but keep the link juice internal? Your thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

Are reciprocal links with a Pandalized site harmful?
Hi, We have a reciprocal link exchange relationship with just 1 website, which is in the same industry as us. They do not have a reciprocal link exchange relationship with any site other than us. Bunches (3-5) of do-follow links to our website appear on approx 2k pages of theirs. We provide several hundred links back to them (1 per page). The links result in some decent traffic exchanged, but nothing significant or getting Pandalized over. Both our sites are in the 60+ domain authority range according to open site explorer. Both of our sites clearly got hit hard by Panda. From a purely SEO perspective, are these reciprocal links hurting us? I have read that Panda has nothing to do with links but I wanted to know if there is a possibly that this may be hurting us. At the time, many years ago, the link exchange seemed to help us rank better. Thanks.

New Site Launch- Bad Rankings
So I am slightly stumped. I work on a few eCom sites and over the past few months we have been launching new products as well as some site updates/upgrades. The issue that I am having is this. Product that is actually new this season, as in we did not carry it before, is ranking fine...generally speaking we are top 3 in Google with Brand/Product name. However product that is not new, meaning it has a new color or graphic but has been in the catalog for years is not ranking. In Prior years the URL's ended with the product name, now however they have additional information added to the end for this season. Would not directing the old URL to the new URL effect the rankings of these pages? I am open to suggestions beyond redirecting as well. Thank you!

Is there an optimal ratio of external links to a page vs internal links originating at that page ?
I understand that multiple links fro a site dilute link juice. I also understand that external links to a specific page with relevant anchortext helps ranking. I wonder if there is an ideal ratioof tgese two items
