Problem of printer friendly version.
-
For one of our client's side, most of the backlinks are going to printer friendly version page. I recommeded to him to use the canonical tag on printer friendly version pointing to other page.
Luckily, while searching i came across this posts at - http://www.seomoz.org/q/solving-printer-friendly-version
The solution recommended was this -
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" media="print" href="our-print-version.css">
My questions are -
1. what should i write in place of our-print-version.css
Should it be print.css ?
2. Where do i place this code ? in which file ?
-
Correct.
Often a site will refer to numerous CSS files. There are tools which will combine multiple CSS files into a single file and properly compress the files to optimize them for page speed.
-
Thanks once again for clarification.
The only question is whether changes need to be made to optimize the code from a SEO or Page Speed perspective.
You mean to say, css code must reside in an external file and linked from page to minimise code.
-
Do i need to 301 printer friendly page ?
No. Your site's visitors need to access the printer friendly page. If you add a 301, then no one will be able to view the print friendly page.
I should also clarify, if your site currently offers a print friendly page and it works, then your programmer has already taken care of the issue from a website functionality perspective. The only question is whether changes need to be made to optimize the code from a SEO or Page Speed perspective.

"It would need to be accessible and declared on the printer friendly version page"
That' what i was looking for. I will ask designer to declare this file in printer friendly version page. So, the solutution will be -
We place this code in printer friendly version page -
<link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" media="print" href="print.css">
print.css will have the css code for print format pages. and print.css will be a separate file
Do i need to 301 printer friendly page ?
-
How the CSS is presented is up to your web designer. It could be a part of the site's main css, or in a separate file. It would need to be accessible and declared on the printer friendly version page.
As part of speed optimizations, all CSS files may be condensed into a single file.

Thanks a lot Ryan.
CSS declarations are made in the of your HTML document
i was not sure, that's why i asked this. Should this declaration be made in printer friendly version page ?
-
Hi Atul.
I looked at the Q&A response link you offered. I will try to offer some clarifications:
Where do i place this code ? in which file ?
CSS declarations are made in the of your HTML document
what should i write in place of our-print-version.css
The name of the file which contains the css code for your print format pages

Your recommendation is sound, and I agree with it.

Will this URL structure: "domain.com/s/content-title" cause problems?
Hey all, We have a new in-house built too for building content. The problem is it inserts a letter directly after the domain automatically. The content we build with these pages aren't all related, so we could end up with a bunch of urls like this: domain.com/s/some-calculator

domain.com/s/some-infographic

domain.com/s/some-product-page Could this cause any significant issues down the line?0 -
Having Problems to Index all URLs on Sitemap
Hi all again ! Thanks in advance ! My client's site is having problems to index all its pages. I even bought the full extension of XML Sitemaps and the number of urls increased, but we still have problems to index all of them. What are the reasons? The robots.txt is open for all robots, we only prohibit users and spiders to enter our Intranet. I've read that duplicate content and 404's can be the reason. Anything else?

Long title problem
I'm getting an incredible number of 4xx errors and long titles from a small website (northstarpad.com); over 13k 4xx errors and almost 20k "title element is too long". The number keeps climbing, but the site shouldn't have more than a couple hundred pages. When I look at the 4xx errors they are clearly being generated by some program since they have multiple and repeating keywords. Here's an example: | http://northstarpad.com/category/wedding-photographer-farmington-michigan/pet-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/wedding-photography/wedding-photography/pet-photography/ | I looked at the ftp files and plugins and couldn't see anything that could cause it, but I'm a beginner so no surprise there. Any suggestions where to look or how to fix this?

Www2 vs www problem
Hi, I have a website that has an old version and a new version. The content is not duplicate on the different versions.
Technical SEO | | TihomirPetrov
The point is that the old version uses www. and non-www before the domain and the new one uses www2. My questions is: Is that a problem and what should be done? Thank you in advance!0 -
is pointing to the same page that it is already on, is this a problem?
So we have a wordpress site with the all-in-one-seo-pack installed. I have just noticed in our crawl diagnostics that a canonical tag has been put in place on every single one of our pages, but they are all pointing to the pages that they are already on. Is this a problem? Should I be worried about this and delve more deeply to figure out as to why this has happened and get it removed? Thanks

Hi all, My website is www.ipbskinning.com I'm having a problem with how my site is appearing in google. I have this in the head of my website: <meta name='<a class="attribute-value">description</a>' content='<a class="attribute-value">Free and Custom IPB Skins for Invision Power Board.</a>'/> Yet when I google 'ipbskinning' it says: Solid Skins. 1We test all our skins in all browsers to insure that they are compatible. This ensures that your users have the best user experience. which is random text from the content of my site. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks a lot all

WordPress E-Commerce Plugin Duplicate Content Problem
I am working on a wordpress website that uses the WP E-Commerce plugin. I am using the Yoast seo plugin but not totally familiar with it. I have noticed that WP E-Commerce creates duplicate content issues. Here's an example: http://www.domain.com/parent-category/product-url-1/ is the same content as http://www.domain.com/parent-category/child-category/product-url-1/. I was wondering which of these following options are the best solution: 1. 301 redirect the multiple instances to one page
Technical SEO | | theanglemedia
2. noindex all but one instance
3. Use the canonical tag (i've used this tag before for telling SE's to use the www version of a page but not sure if it's the appropriate for this)
4. a combination of one of these 3 options? Thanks in advance!0
