Usage of HTTP Status Code 303
-
Hello,
is there anybody who has got some experience with 303 HTTP Status Code?
Our software development would like to use 303 "See Others" instead of 301 for redirecting old product-links to the site-root, instead of showing 404 errors.
What is the best practise for redirecting old product links which are gone in online-shop context?
Best regards
Steffen

I would recommend using a 301 redirect to the home page as this will pass link juice. If they can be redirected to the specific product category that would be useful.
An alternative would be to still serve up the old page so it results in a 200 code or a 301 to a product suggestion page. Having a products like this suggestion page and or a search for products page would likely convert better than just a blanket 301 redirect to the home page.
Another thing you could do is create an intelligent "catch" page that uses the search parameter (if there is one) or the title of the page referring the site and use that as a parameter for searching your products database and serving up some relevant products.

It probably will not pass your link juice if any. Zhis is the difference: 301 status codes are passing on 90% of the link juice the inbound links are giving to your pages.
For users it is good to redirect them to semothing else. The fact that a products period is over does not mean that it will not be searched anymore. Keeping old pages at least in the sitemap will not blow your pages at all. I would do that, however technically if there are no inbound links pointing to the pages that you want to 303 redirect, it will not hurt your seo.

Hi,
our old content is definitly gone away. We have a lot of volatile content which has got a lifetime from 6-12 month and somtimes shorter. I believe keeping old URLs will blow-up indexed pages.
But my general question was about 303 code. Do you have some experience about the difference between 301/303?

Hello,
Are your products gone forever for sure? If you place 301 or 303 the visitors clicking your pages from the serps will see a new content instead of a 404 eror page that is for sure, so it has its user side benefits. However if you are ranking for these products in google and these words are bringing in traffic to your side i would think twice to delete those pages. I you delete the actual content you are ranking with the useres and the engines will see a totally new content, so if you lose your product specific pages you will also lose your rankings sooner or later.
I would leave those pages but do a little reorganizatin on the landing page. I would push the current content a bit downwords and place a one-two line convincing text why you have finished to sell those products (why users should not serych for them longer) and give an alternate better solution for the product type they are searching. So like we have finished selling lithium batteries as the new xy technique has longer 2x life period, and has half the time to charge. You can look at these astonishing products here

Country Code Top Level Domains & Duplicate Content
Hi looking to launch in a new market, currently we have a .com.au domain which is geo-targeted to Australia. We want to launch in New Zealand which is ends with .co.nz If i duplicate the Australian based site completely on the new .co.nz domain name, would i face duplicate content issues from a SEO standpoint?

Google cache is for a 3rd parties site for HTTP version and correct for HTTPS
If I search Google for my cache I get the following: cache:http://www.saucydates.com -> Returns the cache of netball.org (HTTPS page with Plesk default page) cache:https://www.saucydates.com -> Displays the correct page Prior to this my http cache was the Central Bank of Afghanistan. For most searches at present my index page is not returned and when it is, it’s the Net Ball Plesk page. This is, of course hurting my search traffic considerably. ** I have tried many things, here is the current list:** If I fetch as Google in webmaster tools the HTTPS fetch and render is correct. If I fetch the HTTP version I get a redirect (which is correct as I have a 301 HTTP to HTTPS redirect). If I turn off HTTPS on my server and remove the redirect the fetch and render for HTTP version is correct. The 301 redirect is controlled with the 301 Safe redirect option in Plesk 12.x The SSL cert is valid and with COMODO I have ensured the IP address (which is shared with a few other domains that form my sites network / functions) has a default site I have placed a site on my PTR record and ensured the HTTPS version goes back to HTTP as it doesn’t need SSL I have checked my site in Waybackwhen for 1 year and there are no hacked redirects I have checked the Netball site in Waybackwhen for 1 year, mid last year there is an odd firewall alert page. If you check the cache for the https version of the netball site you get another sites default plesk page. This happened at the same time I implemented SSL Points 6 and 7 have been done to stop the server showing a Plesk Default page as I think this could be the issue (duplicate content) ** Ideas:** Is this a 302 redirect hi-jack? Is this a Google bug? Is this an issue with duplicate content as both servers can have a default Plesk page (like millions of others!) A network of 3 sites mixed up that have plesk could be a clue? Over to the experts at MOZ, can you help? Thanks, David

Faulty title, meta description and version (https instead of http) on homepage
Hi there, I am working on a client (http://minibusshuttle.com/) whose homepage is not indexed correctly by Google. In details, the title & meta description are taken from another website (http://planet55.co.uk/). In addition, homepage is indexed as https instead of http. The rest of the URIs are correctly indexed (titles, meta descriptions, http etc). planet55.co.uk used to be hosted on the same server as minibusshuttle.com and an SSL certificate was activated for that domain. I have tried several times to manually "fetch by Google" the homepage, to no avail. The rest of the pages are indexed/refreshed normally and Google responds very fast when I perform any kind of changes there. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Kind regards, George

HTTP Status Bad Request - 404, but also, add a 400 HTTP Status in certain circumstances?
We currently have a custom 404 page set up for our clients, but the developer has it returning a HTTP 200 for the status code. Big no, no. I'm having that fixed right now. My question is, currently, the custom 404 page is only returned for urls with the extension .aspx: For example : ilovepizza.com/pepperni.aspx would return a 404 page because the correct page is ilovepizza.com/pepperoni.aspx Any other format of URL without the extension (example ilovepizza.com/thumbtack) does not trigger the custom 404 page we've created, but it does trigger a server error with a 404 HTTP status page. I want to change this so this type of error also triggers the custom 404 page because it's more user-friendly and would return them to the website. My question: Is there any benefit to making the /thumbtack errors return the custom 404 page but with a 400 Bad Request HTTP Status? Kind of a novice here in those aspects, but does the 400 Bad Request status indicate that it was a user mistake and not a mistake created on the website? Other suggestions?

Blocking HTTP 1.0?
One of my clients believes someone is trying to hack their site. We are seeing the requests with a server protocol or HTTP 1.0 so they want to block 1.0 entirely. Will this cause any problems with search engines or regular, non-spamming visitors?
