H1 and title tags
-
Should they be different
-
A lot of great responses to this from great contributors. Here is another point of view. (Full disclosure: We have sites each way).
If you consider a title a title and a heading a heading, the H1 would be different, but still on subject. I know of no empirical data that states a slightly differing H1 is a negative from an SEO perspective but keyword usage in H1 may provide some benefit. If the title is Used Cars Denver, to me, it makes no sense from a writing perspective to make the H1 Used Cars Denver. I think a reader gets that the title brought her here, so you use a variant in the first part (H1) of the content: Used Cars Denver - Under 10,000 miles. You still have your keyword, but you are giving the reader (searcher) more depth in the next paragraph.
Obviously, the H2 could be Used Cars Denver - 10001 to 25,000, etc.
Even though we do it, I think part of it is driven by tools we use for keyword optimization on page (think SEOmoz Pro Onpage Optimization Grader) as opposed to what might be more readable or potentially more SEO friendly. Yes, I know about keywords in the H1, etc. but I do not think you have to match the title tag. I think it has to make sense from a reading perspective or you are just being redundant. Again, we do both... But, maybe I will revisit this

Simon and Egol are spot on. No argument from me
They should both be describing the same content. They need not be the exact same, but should not be off topic.
-
I think they should be slightly different. Obviously on a case by case basis, but I tend to have more content in my page title then in the H1. I do start my page titles with the H1 but I may include a strong brand name or even a call to action in an effort to increase CTR. It's also good practice to match H1 with page name / URL.
Something like this:
Men's Watches | Overstock.com: Buy Watches Online
Men's Watches | Amazon.com: Omega, citizen, Cartier, Tag Heuer ...
Mens Watches And Watches For Men For The Holidays At - Macy's
-
throwing my 2cents in... I do exactly this as well. We also name the images on the page the same
-
I agree. If not exactly the same then the H1 should at least match the start of the page Title, they should both reflect the main theme/topic of the page.
-
(this question could start an argument!)
In my opinion they should be the same.
When your title appears in the SERPs that is what visitors are expecting - so give it to them.

Title tags for deep pages
Just pondering what is current best practice for Title tags of pages buried deep within my website? Say I have a page about 'Cheese's of the world' and from that page there is a page about 'Cheshire Cheese' how would you suggest to structure title tags Would for example this be ok - Cheshire Cheese | Cheese's of the World | Brand name Or is this better - Cheshire Cheese | Brand name Just wondering as I'm redesigning my site currently and looking at everything! Ted PS - I like cheese 🙂

Page Title - What is better?
Hi SEO Heads, I have another question if someone would be so kind in answering What page title of the 2 below is better for SEO (i) Chocolate Cake|Chocolate Cake Recipe|Xmas Cake or (ii) Chocolate Cake | Chocolate Cake Recipe | Xmas Cake As you can see (ii) Page Title has a space before and after the | (vertical bar) I know the second page title looks better to human eyes but on some pages I had to forego the space so i could fit my keywords in the page title. is this a good idea? Can anyone help me? Cheers Aidan

What is the threshold for a page title to be considered duplicate?
We're trying to find out what percentage of words in a page title need to be the same for it to be considered duplicate? We have search results pages for each country on our site, so the only difference in the page title is the country name and they are all being flagged as duplicate, even though they are not 100% duplicate.

Strange titles showing in WMT?
On one of my wordpress sites, I have just checked it out in Google Webmaster tools and under duplicate titles it is showing spam titles which I did not add? Lamisil Buy - Buy Online on two pages of the site However these two pages are no longer online? So I have 2 quick questions please 1.) How did they add a title to these 2 pages 2.) Why is it still showing in WMT when these pages are no longer live? Also under duplicate titles it is showing pages that dont exist? i.e. ?yonidza=orde and some of which such as weddings.html are pages from the old site structure that no longer exist - how can I reduce these errors down?

Duplicate Title question
Thanks Mozzers in advance for any insight into what I'm sure is a basic SEO question. I'm working with a resort in the great state of Maine. Their home page title reads Maine Resorts, Resorts in Maine, (company name). The site has about 400 URL's and over half of the URL's utilize the first keyword phrase of the home page title, "Maine Resorts." Predominately, I find them used on the Accommodations pages (pages that describe each room with a picture) which I would label as deeper pages and non-conversion type pages. The page titles themselves are not exact duplicates of the Home Page Title but might read something like "Maine Resorts, Company Name, Accommodation Listing." My concern is that the heavy use of "Maine Resorts" as the first phrase in over 200 plus pages might be competing against the home page and pulling the home page ranking down. Thanks for any help given!
