URL SEO
-
Hi All
I am completely new to SEO and I have a question about URL's which I would like advise on.
We are about to launch an immigration consultancy website which caters for several countries.
For the example below we are targeting the keyword "UK Visit Visa", which URL would be better from an SEO prospective?
1. www.example.com/uk/visit-visa
2. www.example.com/uk/uk-visit-visaThanks,
Fuad

Hi Simon,
Thanks for your comprehensive answer really, really helpful. We are planning to use sub-folders for different countries but we will now combine this with your suggestion of putting really important pages on the root.
I have already read 'The Beginner's Guide to SEO and it was fantastic.
I am sure I will be bothering you with more SEO no brainers in the near future.
Kind regards,
Fuad

John and Casey have given good advice,
if you are trying to rank in different countries on the same website. You should read this page, New markup for multilingual content

Hi Fuad
A good question.
The answer kind of depends upon your intended structure for your website going forwards. It's usually advisable to keep pages at as high a level as possible, as in having a fairly flat hierarchy.
If you are to have a sub-folder for each country, then from the above, my answer would be:
because you won't need 'uk' to be there twice in the URL.
If these were deemed to be really important pages for your visitors, then you could even consider:
so that these pages are at the highest possible level. Though this depends on how you are structuring the rest of your website, could be that it's best for the User Experience & Navigation that all UK pages fall within a UK sub-folder.
Also consider whether or not you need the www. as that is a subdomain, could go for **example.com/uk/visit-visa **
As you are new to SEO, check out 'The Beginner's Guide to SEO' here on SEOmoz. Chapter 4 has some coverage of URL Structures.
I hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

You might want to be careful. Duplicate content issues will arise if the same content is on the same page for different countries.
I agree with Casey www.example.com/uk/visit-visa will be just fine.

Hi Faud,
There is no reason to stuff uk in your URL twice, search engine will see that /uk/ just fine. As this is just a small part of the algorithm anyways either way is just fine for SEO, so use the one whats better for the user.

go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa
No information is available for this page.
Learn why The go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa redirects to https://in.musafir.com/Visa/singapore-visa.aspx with some UTM parameters. The URL go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa is a shortened URL which was used for SMS marketing and all of a sudden Google has picked it in SERP instead of Singapore VIsa Landing Page. The Singapore visa Main page is not blocked by Robots.txt file. Please help me to resolve this.1 -
More pages or less pages for best SEO practices?
Hi all, I would like to know the community's opinion on this. A website with more pages or less pages will rank better? Websites with more pages have an advantage of more landing pages for targeted keywords. Less pages will have advantage of holding up page rank with limited pages which might impact in better ranking of pages. I know this is highly dependent. I mean to get answers for an ideal website. Thanks,

Do Explainer Videos Help SEO?
My company makes explainer videos. I often come across a lot of (seemingly) inflated & unprovable stats, pertaining to explainer videos, from other companies. This article claims that "Having an explainer video on your web page makes it 53% more likely to show up on the first page of Google search results" Is there any real data to back up such a claim? Do explainer videos really help SEO? How?

Organic Traffic dropped 50%. Anyone want to have a stab at why? (URL listed)
Just curious what the pro's on here think is the reason why our site got hammered recently. The URL is www.jobshadow.com. We've got gobs of quality content that had been ranking for quite a few keywords. Even one from Rand himself http://www.jobshadow.com/interview-with-seo-and-seomoz-founder-rand-fishkin/ Rankings for even the exact match domain keyword 'Job Shadow' have been pummeled. Anyway, we've got a pretty solid link profile I would think. We also have a very high user time on the site, thus suggesting the organic traffic was engaged when Google ranked us for those keywords. We have lots of unsolicited inbound links and even recent ones from PBS. I'm not really sure what it takes to please the "machine" at this point. Curious as to what everyone here thinks.

Is URL appearance defined by crawling or by XML sitemap
I am having a problem developing a sitemap because I have long URLs that are made by zend. They go like this: http://myagingfolks.com/professionals/20661/social-workers/pennsylvania-civi-stanger Because these URL's are long and are fed by Zend when I try to call them all up, to put on the sitemap, the system runs out of memory and crashes. Do you know what part of a search result, in google, say, comes from the URL? Would it be fine for me to submit to google only www.myagingfolks.com/professionals/20661. Does the crawler find that the URL is indeed http://myagingfolks.com/professionals/20661/social-workers/pennsylvania-civi-stanger or does it go with just what the sitemap tells it?
