Home Page Content - In a Div?
-
Is putting content in a div so it doesn't muck up the look of the home page create a problem in doing well organically? Example - http://www.callawaygardens.com. We have lots of clients that want no text on the home page and we are trying to figure out how to do this while still ranking well organically. What are your thoughts? Can we get in trouble? Are there negative impacts with SEO doing it like this?
Thank you!

Hi Katie, I think you're referring to the "More +" button on the bottom left of the site? I think that's an OK implementation, but it would be a lot better if it was more obvious. Aside from the fact that the site takes forever to load (which is a much bigger issue), having to figure out to click that little button to get that big section of content isn't ideal - from a user experience standpoint I'd much prefer to see that content displayed normally and just require guests to scroll down to see it. But, the client wants what the client wants I suppose. Companies have been penalized for hiding content on a page - though the examples are malicious and obviously link-driven, unlike the content on the site you linked. SInce none of the content that is hidden is especially spammy, and they're not trying to squeeze in a bunch of keyword-rich links, I don't think it'd be an SEO issue. The text of that section is about 700 lines deep in the source code, however, which isn't ideal. If you can find a way to move that higher in the code I would do so. Take a look at this company's portfolio: http://www.whitestonemarketing.com/design.html They do a good job of integrating large photography for hospitality sites without making the site visitor have to click 'more' buttons. I much prefer the user experience on a site like http://www.victorianfarmhouse.com/ than on the one you linked.

Hi Kane:
This is not our client but give you the idea of what we will do. http://www.callawaygardens.com/.
Additional thoughts?
Thank you!
Katie

Are you looking to hide the divs or place them behind content like an image or flash? If so, I would only include text that shows up in the image or flash, otherwise it's going to look pretty deceptive.

Geotargeting on Home Page
I work on a website that have listings across the country. Is it possible for us to geotarget the home page of the website to cater to the person based on location so we can show the geogargeting links, articles, videos on the home page and direct the user in the right direction. Forrent seem to be doing it: http://www.forrent.com/ Will this have any negative SEO impact or we can lose rankings ?

Will changing my home page cause rankings to drop?
We are looking at doing a major change with our website. Upper management is wanting to have our home page be our store page, instead of just a landing page. So basically we would be eliminating our current home page, and replacing it with our store page. This is a very large site and our current home page gets a lot of traffic. Issues to deal with will be ranking of the current page content; Internal links to both pages; external links (backlinks) pointing to the two pages, and of course, a potential drop in rankings and traffic. Any ideas on how to best do this? Or not do it at all. 301 redirect? Thanks, Brad

Duplicate Content
I have a question about duplicate content. (auto generated text).

Will google consider page 1 and page 2 as duplicate content? Page 1. You will find all the Amazon coupon codes and Amazon discount codes currently available listed below, if Amazon doesn't currently have any coupons available you may want to check for Amazon deals or find related coupon codes or promotional codes for similar online stores selling the same products as amazon.
We always have the latest coupon codes for Amazon which are updated daily, so if you can't find any Amazon coupons here then you won't find them anywhere else.
Shop online today at Amazon, and take advantage of the coupon codes that Amazon currently has on offer, these coupon codes, offer codes, and promo codes for Amazon may never be available again. Page 2. You will find all the Target coupon codes and Target discount codes currently available listed below, if Target doesn't currently have any coupons available you may want to check for Target deals or find related coupon codes or promotional codes for similar online stores selling the same products as Target.
We always have the latest coupon codes for Target which are updated daily, so if you can't find any Target coupons here then you won't find them anywhere else.

Duplicate content because of content scrapping - please help
We manage brands websites in a very competitive industry that have thousands of affiliate links We see that more and more websites (mainly affiliates websites) are scrapping our brand websites content and it generate many duplicate content (but most of them link to us back with an affiliate link). Our brand websites still rank for any sentence in brackets you search in Google, Will this duplicate content hurt our brand websites ? If yes, should we take some preventive actions ? We are not able to add ongoing UGC or additional text to all our duplicate content and trying to stop those websites of stealing our content is like playing cat and mouse... Thanks for your advices
