Multiple Region/Language Solutions
-
So I understand that this is a fairly broad question but I am trying to work through this on a bunch of different levels with a bunch of different sites that have multiple different issues.
First I am wondering if I have an e-commerce site on a .com that is used to serve to different languages and locales around the world. Instead of a Domain.com/ES/ for a site that is supposed to serve Spain and a Domain.com/DE/ for a site that is supposed to serve Germany, we do Domain.com/en_ES/ and Domain.com/es_ES/ for an English and a Spanish version for our consumers that come from Spain.
My first question is this a bad way to set this up just from a structure standpoint and my second question is what do I do about duplicate content on different locales but same languages? I am afraid that if I rel=canonical this to 1 region for each language that it may not show up in SE's for other regions but the same language. (Example Brazil and Portugal for Portuguese, Belgium and Netherlands for Dutch, Canada and France for French, Spain and Mexico for Spanish, etc...)
Second do the language meta tags actually do anything or not? I am finding mixed opinions on this.
Third what is the IDEAL website structure for a website that will serve multiple languages and locales from the same ccTLD? I understand this is not ideal but what is the best setup with this situation?
Again I know this is a broad question but I am coming across a lot of e-commerce sites wanting help and dealing with this situation. The duplicate content thing is worrisome and I want good, localized indexing.
Thanks!

First, the site structure you're proposing sounds fine. The shorter URLs with just the country code look better to me, but I'd lowercase the country codes.
Second, there are a few things you can do to make sure the search engines are doing the right thing with respect to content for different countries. You can set you location target for each directory within Google Webmaster Tools in Site configuration > Settings. You can also set language metadata, or set HTTP headers to clue in Bing as to what language and country the page is targeting (see http://www.bing.com/community/site_blogs/b/webmaster/archive/2011/03/01/how-to-tell-bing-your-website-s-country-and-language.aspx).
Even though these are targeted to different countries, they show up to the search engines as duplicate content since the content is so similar, and until recently there wasn't much that could be done about it. You could either rel=canonical to the page that caters to your main audience, or just accept that there would be some duplicate content. Google recently announced support for a rel=alternate tag which should help to mitigate this. You can read more about it here: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-markup-for-multilingual-content.html. The tl;dr of this is you can set rel=alternate tags to signal which pages are alternates of each other, and rel=canonical to one preferred version. When this page would come up in search, it'll use the title and description from the preferred page, but if the searcher is in a country where you have an alternate version, it'll use the URL for the alternate page. It's not perfect, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Can a H1 Tag Have Multiple Spans Within It?
H1 tags on my client's website follow the template [Service] + [Location]. These two have their own span, meaning there are two spans in an H1 tag. class="what">Truck Repair near class="where">California, CA How do crawl bots see this? Is that okay for SEO?

How reliable / current is Moz spam score at should I disavow?
Hey Mozzers, I'm just analysing a website's back link profile, and there are around 15 sites that link with a Moz spam score of 8 and above. I'm inclined to just go straight in and disavow these websites, even though some are industry relevant. But before I do, what are your thoughts around the reliability of Moz's spam score, and disavowing a site if above a particular score (8 and above). Thanks!

301 Multiple Sites to Main Site
Over the past couple years I had 3 sites that sold basically the same products and content. I later realized this had no value to my customers or Google so I 301 redirected Site 2 and Site 3 to my main site (Site 1). Of course this pushed a lot of page rank over to Site 1 and the site has been ranking great. About a week ago I moved my main site to a new eCommerce platform which required me to 301 redirect all the url's to the new platform url's which I did for all the main site links (Site 1). During this time I decided it was probably better off if I DID NOT 301 redirect all the links from the other 2 sites as well. I just didn't see the need as I figured Google realized at this point those sites were gone and I started fearing Google would get me for Page Rank munipulation for 301 redirecting 2 whole sites to my main site. Now I am getting over 1,000 404 crawl errors in GWT as Google can no longer find the URL's for Site 2 and Site 3. Plus my rankings have dropped substantially over the past week, part of which I know is from switching platforms. Question, did I make a mistake not 301 redirecting the url's from the old sites (Site 2 and Site 3) to my new ecommerce url's at Site 1?

Tired of finding solution for duplicate contents.
Just my site was scanned by seomoz and seen lots of duplicate content and titles found. Well I am tired of finding solutions of duplicate content for a shopping site product category page. You can see the screenshot below. http://i.imgur.com/TXPretv.png You can see below in every link its showing "items_per_page=64, 128 etc.". This happened in every category in which I was created. I am already using Canonical add-on to avoid this problem but still it's there. You can check my domain here - http://www.plugnbuy.com/computer-software/pc-security/antivirus-internet-security/ and see if the add-on working correct. I recently submitted my sitemap to GWT, so that's why it's not showing me any report regarding duplicate issues. Please help ME

Domain Forwarding / Multiple Domain Names / or Rebuild Blogs on them
I am considering forwarding 3 very aged and valuable domain names to my main site. There were once over 100 blog posts on each blog and each one has a page authority of 45 and domain authority of 37. My question is should i put up three blogs on the domains and link them to my site or should i just forward the domains to my main site? Which will provide me with more value. I have the capability to have some one blog on them every day. However, i do not have access to any of the old blog posts. I guess i could scrape it of archive.org. Any advice would be appreciated. Could multiple languagues on one site be bad for SEO???
Our site is has content in English and in Spanish. The spanish side was translated by me, Spanish is my first language, so i know that the translations are good and its original content. We were Pandalized/Penguinnized pretty bad earlier this year. We have completely cleaned our site of anything that could be considered thin content or grey hat techniques. An associate is telling me that we need to put the spanish version of the site on its own domain, does this make sense to anyone? The spanish side of the site gets only about 5% of the visitors, bu i still don't see the logic in taking all those pages and putting them on a different domain. Would this help recover from Panda/Penguin. Thanks

Same Video on Multiple Pages and Sites... Duplicate Issues?
We're rolling out quite a bit of pro video and hosting on a 3-party platform/player (likely BrightCove) that also allows us to have the URL reside on our domain. Here is a scenario for a particular video asset: A. It's on a product page that the video is relevant for. B. We have an entry on our blog with the video C. We have a separate section of our site "Video Library" that provides a centralized view of all videos. It's there too. D. We eventually give the video to other sites (bloggers, industry educational sites etc) for outreach and link-building. A through C on our domain are all for user experience as every page is very relevant, but are there any duplicate video issues here? We would likely only have the transcript on the product page (though we're open to suggestions). Any related feedback would be appreciated. We want to make this scalable and done properly from the beginning (will be rolling out 1000+ videos in 2010)
