Falling Domain Authority
-
What are the factors that would cause my domain authority to fall? As best I understand it, we would have to be losing links. For example, one of my clients started with a DA around 60 and now 4 months on it is sitting around 47.
This has happened with a couple clients and I'm not really sure why or how to counteract it.

Hi Joshua,
You are essentially correct, but it could be a number of factors. Off the top of my head, and this is by no means a complete list of possibilities, the reasons for a loss of DA could be caused by:
- As you stated, losing links. It's estimated that each year over 50% of the entire web "disappears". Most of this is junk, but it happens to good links as well
- For one reason or another, Linkscape didn't find certain links during it's last crawl of the web. They may reappear during the next update.
- The sites linking to you lost Domain Authority themselves. This would effect your score
- Natural changes in Linkscape from update to update. SEOmoz is constantly improving how it crawls the web (and sometimes there's some rough spot around the edges) which causes natural fluctuation in link metrics. When this happens, it's best to use DA not as a historical measure of your own site, but as a competitive measure against your competitors. If your DA fell, it's possible your competitors DA fell as well and you are just as strong.
More than likely, it's a combination of several factors. Usually, it's nothing to worry about unless you see it correspond to a traffic drop as well. Hopefully your DA will be back up during the next update.

This is a common perception, but this applies more to Page Authority than Domain Authority.
Each domain has one DA score, which applies to the entire site. Domain Authority is the "grandaddy" metric that takes all the other metrics into consideration, including Page Authority and MozTrust.
Page Authority, on the other hand, flows between individual pages. So in this situation, a large number of new pages without new links will most likely have low Page Authority, but the DA for the site as a whole remains the same.
-
According to SEOmoz there are over 150 signals included in DA calculation. Of course links would be your usual suspect here but as Phil Gross said you should revisit all the changes you've made in the past months.
-
Good add!
-
I think that another factor that could reduce domain authority is if you add a significant number of additional pages to your site without earning a proportional number of new inbound links. This would dilute the authority across the domain.
-
Joshua,
I would certainly look into where your link building strategies built your links into. There is a possibility that your site has placed inbound links on a spam site or a network that was hit. Other items may include quality level of content. If you are not using original authoritative content you could see a shit. One initial question is how has this impacted rankings for your primary keyword sets?
Revisit any work over the last 4 months you have done, you may have done some dev work that is negatively impacting you? What is your Google Webmasters Account saying? Has your page load time slowed down? Have you changed server environments? There are certainly a number of possibilities. If several of our clients are experiencing the same thing and you are hosting then look at the hosting level. If you are in a shared hosting environment then a spam site on the same server could impact you.

Domain Authority Goes Down After Https change
We just moved our domain from http to https. We have been at a solid 89 for domain authority for the past year, but this month we are now at 88. Does changing to https cause the domain authority to go down and is this just a temporary fluctuation?

Question about SEO and domains
Hello, Over time we have purchased many domain names that relate to our business. Let us say we sell chairs of type A, chairs of type B, Tables of Type C etc. We also have a main web site (main domain) which has been functioning for many years and is ranked well but not great. Since we have domain chairtypeA.com and chairtypeB.com I was thinking of putting them to good use as follows. STRATEGY A a) Create the domain as a parallel domain but is mainly informational - it talks about chair type A, its history, what to look for etc. It has the same IP address as main domain b) Have all the links on the page be directly linked to the MAIN site- so if you are on page for ChairtypeA and want to see it in a set you just click a link and it takes you to the main site. c) The look and feel of the ChairtypeA site is exactly the same as the main site - in fact except for the Heading, title and content the whole framework is from the main site. My hope is that if people are looking for chairtypeA, we would rank and attract customers. Plus it would use up some of the domain names we have purchased. THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE (Strategy B) is a) Create a domain for chairtypeA parallel to main domain (same IP address) b) redirect it to subfolder in main domain c) refer to the pages also as maindomain/chairtypeA (here is where it is no longer purely parallel) I have 3 objectives a) Use my purchased domain names b) Focus on certain products (liek ChairtypeA) c) Overall increase visibility and ranking Please give me any feedback which indicates whether Strategy A or Strategy B is more effective, or if any has negative consequences. Or you could suggest Strategy C - a completely new approach. Thanks Sam

PR2 vs Page Authority 65
Looking at a website that has a Google Toolbar rank of 2. Moz Authority is 65. Why would there be such a huge difference? Site has been around since 2000 but has not been updated. Mosst of the links are from 3000 links all owned by the same person.

Page Rank vs Page and Domain Authority - who wins?
A client has found another SEO agency promising various things to do with link building. Most of these promises are based upon links from sites with allegedly high page ranks. So my questions: Page rank seems to be fading out am I safe to stay with PA and DA metrics instead? I don't agree with link building tactics and feel that it should more a networking activity to provide USEFUL links to users... am I being too white hat and missing opporunities? The other company have promised long list of links including 100 SEO friendly web directory listings, 200 PR 8 back links from Pinterest (which i thought was no follow) & 10 long lasting and high quality mini web sites (with three pages/posts, video and pictures). Am I right that this all sounds a little spammy or is this really what I should be doing for me clients?

NoFollow Links from Subdomain to root domain better than DoFollow Links?
Our service at fotograf.de is a shopsystem for professional photographers. The customers can build their own website with our tool including an onlineshop to sell their pictures. Here is my question: One part of the customers use subdomains of our site like photographers.fotograf.de. On each customer website we include a backlink to our homepage www.fotograf.de. From SEO view is it better to set these links as NoFollow Links? Or should we put one Follow Link on the starting page on each site and on the other pages only NoFollow Link? Are these links bad for our SEO regarding link diversity because they all come from one root domain? Thanks for the answers! Sebastian

Issue getting total links, page & domain authority
Hi guys, I am trying to get total links, page & domain authority using the API. Domain authority decrease after open site explorer update. Reasons?
Hi! I just noticed a decrease on our domain authority and also the page authority of several of our pages on the SeoMoz toolbar. For instance, DA went from 34 to 29. I was scared and confused, so I went to check it on the opensite explorer and saw that it had been updated. I want to ask you guys if the same happened with your metrics or is it just us. Because the strange thing about it is that we have been doing some good optimization work lately and also some linkbuilding, and actually our SERP’s have been improving in general, and some specific ones have been performing great. Our website is http://www.inmonova.com as a reference. Can anyone cast some light into this?

The value of .uk.com domains
It was a long night last night (working, not playing), therefore forgive the potential stupidness of this question... Running an OSE report on a website earlier their top linking domain was *.uk.com. This is a valid TLD, and I know for sure that the website has not acquired links direct from the uk.com website but from some-other-registered-domain.uk.com. What I am asking is does the Moz Calculation and/or the pagerank calculation give more value to these links? *.uk.com has a Domain Authority of 71 and 156,497 linking root domains. If so i'm gonna go buy me a bunch of .uk.com domains..... Opinions please.
