Different HTML based on resolution

Is it acceptable in terms of SEO to display different HTML based on a users resolution size?
I feel I'm wasting space on my site catering for all the 1024 x 768ers

SEO Wise I don't think there's any issues, though I wonder what resolution the Googlebot reports itself as having. It's important though that you do it the way Chas Blackford states; if you have actual server side code that changes a bunch of things around based on resolution then you might get in trouble. This is an interesting article about using stylesheets to segment mobile layouts (it also mentions Media Queries which are kind smart/new phone specific):

There are some implementation issues, the most important of which is reliably getting the resolution from the agent. Essentially, you can't guarantee it 100% of the time. From what I've read a combination of user agent string matching and resolution detection can probably get you most of the way though.

Yes it's acceptable - the key is utilizing CSS and use a DOCTYPE with a DTD to present a different UX based on the device. Work with an experience coder who can structure the page template to put the content first, minimizing scripts, etc - you want to score high on the Google page speed test (https://developers.google.com/pagespeed/).
Then test across all devices you think 80% plus visitors will be using (check your Google Analytics to profile browsers, OS, devices and resolution)
BTW - Here's what Google has to say about SEOmoz (scoring an 83/100)
High priority. These suggestions represent the largest potential performance wins for the least development effort. You should address this item first:
Leverage browser caching
Medium priority. These suggestions may represent smaller wins or much more work to implement. You should address these items next:
Minimize redirects, Optimize images
Low priority. These suggestions represent the smallest wins. You should only be concerned with these items after you've handled the higher-priority ones:
Inline Small CSS, Enable compression, Defer parsing of JavaScript, Minify CSS, Specify a cache validator, Minify JavaScript, Minify HTML, Specify a character set, Optimize the order of styles and scripts, Remove query strings from static resources, Specify a Vary: Accept-Encoding header -
Hi Niall
Responsive design seems to be everywhere now and your point above seems to touch on this. From a UX perspective there really isn't a perfect design that caters for every single display and user. Google Analytics allows you to track screen resolution so I suggest that for any particular track this for a while and if there are mutliple types then think of designing to cater for it.
However even though I am in website design I tend to head for he safety of the middle ground and have not yet fully dived into the HTML5 /Responsive area yet as most customers are not demanding it.
However as the tablet and smart phone become the default device as opposed to the fun one it may become an issue.
hope this helps
Kieran

Stop Google indexing entire website based on search location
OK - bear with me... We have a .co.uk website. However, we only want it indexing in the US Google and NOT the UK Google. Is there a way of configuring this in Search Console /Webmaster tools?

HTML snapshot creating soft 404
Has anyone any experience with HTML snapshots? We have a recruitment client that has HTML snapshots against all job pages as they are built with AJAX. The pages naturally die after around four weeks (the job vacancy runs out) and whilst the AJAX version of the page hard 404s, the HTML snapshot version returns a soft 404. How can we get it to mirror the dead page with 404 status?

Have I done enough seo on this page to make a difference
Hi, my home page has been a thorn in my side for as long as i remember. On normal sites i am ok with seo but when it comes to my magazine site it is a whole new ball game as everything is different. I have been working with a developer who has told me to remove the intro to the site on the home page and to move the bottom of the site which was about the magazine but i am not sure if this is right. I want the site to rank well for the following Lifestyle Magazine now before our upgrade, we ranked well for this and other words, we were number one for a very long time and then stayed on the first page but now since the upgrade, i am jumping from page 9, 10, to six and not sure why that is happening. I would like to know if the advice i have been given is correct, have i done enough on the page to rank well for lifestyle magazine, or should i be doing what i have been taught previously where i should be having an intro to the site so google can pick up the words lifestyle magazine and other words. the site is www.in2town.co.uk many thanks for your input

Backlinks go to "example.com" our homepage is "example.com/default.html" am I losing internal link power?
Hey everyone! Thanks again for everybodies contributions to my questions over the last few months. As the title states, our homepage is at "example.com/default.html" but everybody that backlinks to us (as expected) to "example.com" does that mean that I am probably losing a lot of the power of my links??

Indexed pages and current pages - Big difference?
Our website shows ~22k pages in the sitemap but ~56k are showing indexed on Google through the "site:" command. Firstly, how much attention should we paying to the discrepancy? If we should be worried what's the best way to find the cause of the difference? The domain canonical is set so can't really figure out if we've got a problem or not?

Will same language different region (US/UK) geotargeting via subdirectory (& GWT) cause dupe content or other issues ?
If a UK hosted site on a .com, needs to target US now too but for keywords that are spelt differently in US is creating duplicate version of uk hosted .com site and putting it on a subdirectory .com/us/ and geotargeting via webmaster tools (to usa) ok ? I take it in this scenario no dupe content issues (or other issues) so long as is geotargeted via GWT ? Or are there ? Comments from anyone with experience doing similar (same language, different region geo-targeting dupe content with kw spelling being only difference, via a subdirectory or other route) much appreciated ? Many Thanks 🙂
