Multiple Domains pointing to one site?
-
Due to takeovers, different strategies and a certain amount of historical lack of control, we have a dozen sites covering many different specialist areas of our business.
To make things easier to manage, we are thinking of merging website content, then repointing some of the domains to the new section within the larger website. The content on each site is all different, but the subject matter is sometimes the same. This will make content, design and management much easier.
We propose to choose the best content, then repoint the underperforming domains. Is there an seo risk of having many domains pointing to one site?

Thanks for your advice all of you. Much appreciated.
Nakul has the issue exactly. We have links for a specialist website which ranks well for a specific keyword. We want to put that content within the main site, and then redirect to that section.
From a users point of view it make complete sense, but I was worried that it would be seen as spammy.
Bryan, we are only thinking of resirecting existing websites. Not URLs that have never had any content.
If no-one thinks it might be risky, I suppose we should just get on with it.
Also take the advice on doing the 301's carefully too. Thanks.

Well, I think I have a different opinion here. Think from a user's perspective as well as the Search Engine perspective, here's the way I am thinking.
Let's consider I own a small company called ABC offering XYZ services. Now SEOMOZ acquires that ABC and all the services are now offered via Microsoft. There are tons of citations from Wikipedia and other new etc kind of sources mentioning XYZ. They are all linking to XYZ services page on ABC.com
Now when we redirect ABC.com to SEOMOZ.org, its all good. So till this point, we are all good, but if we have lots of deep links to ABC.com from around the web, won't it make sense to have specific redirects in place, redirecting ABC.com/XYZ to SEOMOZ.org/Products/XYZ etc provided there's a page about XYZ on SEOMOZ.
Does that make sense ? This way if I click on to a link about XYZ from somewhere on the web, I reach the desired URL, not just the homepage of a big company or corporation, where I will have to further drill down trying to find the information I am looking for.

I agree with what is noted above, and would only add that you need to be sure that the old domains get rewritten to the new domain, and that you are sending a 301 redirect when this happens.
If you don't set the 301 redirect any pages on the old domains that ranked will not rank on the new domain as they will lose their link and historical google index information, and have to get new links and fight their way back up.

There is no fault in redirecting the multiple domains to one domain, however, do not go overboard, if the domains were never indexed by Google before then rather just get rid of them.
I do however suggest that you never redirect your domains to internal pages or section on another domain, so never redirect http://www.domain1.com to http://www.domain2.com/products as this is bad practice. It should always be http://www.domain1.com to http://www.domain2.com as it may be picked up as spam (this is my opinion)
You can read up a great explanation on redirection in learn SEO > Redirection

How do I properly sitemap a site with static pages + Wordpress in it's own directory?
I apologize for the awkward wording in the headline. No to the issue, I have a site with static pages that are created as follows: url.com, url.com/page1, url.com/page2, etc. I then have WordPress install at url.com/blog. What is the proper method for creating a comprehensive sitemap for my entire domain. I like the sitemap feature provided by Yoast SEO plugin but I assume it will only index the wordpress directory (url.com/blog). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Google Slower to Trust New Pages than One Year Ago?
It seems to me that Google is slower to trust (and rank) new pages today than in the past. I used to be able to put up a new page and it would go right to the top of a competitive SERP. For about the past year when I launch a new page it starts deep in the SERPs, sits there for a few weeks, then starts slowly moving up. These pages still eventually rank on the first page of Google - often at #1 or #2 after wikipedia or another strong site - but it can take a few months to get there, several months in a competitive SERP. These are not "hot news" topics where freshness is an important factor. Instead they are product pages or general information articles. Anybody else seeing this? [ Just stabbing in the dark here... I am wondering if Google is relying more on visitor behavior these days and the delay is while they collect data?... Just stabbing in the dark.]

How many categories should you have within a blog / Wordpress Site for SEO?
Hi Guys I am just wondering whether or not for SEO purposes it is better to have a small number of categories for your blog posts to fit into as opposed to numerous ones. The reason I ask is that I have one site which is fairly new to the search engines - 8 months old which has 7 general categories within the blog for instance "rail contractors", "railway construction" "airport construction" etc I have another site which is 10 years old which has built up 25 different types of categories for instance brand design, brand development, brand management (i guess you could put all these under 1 category "branding"? We've been writing lots of press for both sites... yet the younger site is getting more coverage on Google page 1. Would this be because the blogs / press are more concentrated under a specific category as opposed to being spread thinly throughout the site? Any help would be appreciated. Debs 🙂

Are reciprocal internal links weaker than one way?
Hi guys I have an eCommerce site and a blog. the blog is on a suddomain. I am writing content about our products on the blog, I.e. Full in depth reviews and top 10 lists etc. These blog posts link back to the main product page. It would also be nice for customers on the site to a "blogs about this product" section. However, would a link from the product page to the blog weaken the internal link from the blog to the product? Thanks Paul

Does having blog on subdomain weaken primary site's SEO?
I have a Joomla site with a WordPress subdomain that I'm wanting to use as a learning center. It's far more simple for new blog editors and publishers to learn that over Joomla. The issue I'm facing is trying to figure out rather having the blog put into the primary domain instead of a subdomain will hurt my ratings at all? Where I got the idea that it may hurt ratings is due to how (from what I understand) search engines will see a subdomain slightly different than the primary domain. Thank you for any help!

If we use content copied from another site ( assuming we have not plagerized), does it hurt our Google Rankings?
We have permission from another company to copy their content and use it on our site. This happens when we are describing a manufacturer's product and we copy pages from their site and add these pages to our site in order to describe the product we are selling. Is this considered duplicate content? Can this practice hurt us?
