Duplicate content issue
-
Hi
I installed a wiki and a forum to subdomains of one of my sites. The crawl report shows me duplicate content on the forum and on wiki. This will hurt the main site? Or the root domain? the site by the way is clean absolutely from errors. Thanks

Hi Dr Peter,
I just wanted to add some extra info for the readers. This was my goal. Its ok Wiki is gone for moment, as for the forum most possible I will make it as you advice (no index). as I dont seek traffic from it.I dont have time to manage everything. Thanks for your time

Sorry, I'm slightly confused. Are the wiki and forum duplicating each other, or are they each duplicating content on your root domain. Even in a sub-domain, they could be diluting content in your root domain, but it really depends a lot on the situation and extent of the duplication.
You could use the canonical tag to point them to the source of the content, or you could block them (probably META NOINDEX), but I'd like to understand the goals a bit better.

Actually, the original poster mentioned a wiki, but said nothing about wikipedia. I'm going to ask another associate to also look at this thread and chime in to make sure we've got this figured out correctly.

Thanks!

Hey Nikos, if you are using wiki and forum in subdomains then surely you should getting duplicate content issue in webmaster because wiki takes first few content of a Wikipedia article and pastes it into your blog post. A link to the corresponding article is also included.
But I think as long as you have more unique content to over power that of a few content of wikipedia article and putting it at the end of the blog, it not being a problem as many sites use snippets of content from others as references.
I suggest you to please ensure that the main page shouldn't link to the subdomains in that case but subdomain can link to main domain. I think in that way your main domain will not get affected.
Well I advice you to read "How Changes To The Way Google Handles Subdomains Impact SEO" post, I am sure you will find solution. Thanks Cheers!

Cool! Is any way to eliminate them? Or is not necessary? I read one article about duplicate content article about forums and was written that google dont punish forums if they have duplicate content (inside the site) like pages, titles and stuff. Is true or that change? me personal I dont care to much about subdomains because I am promoting the main site and forum + wiki are just bonus for my visitors! ohh , by the way harald another tactic what i practise and is working is the folloing. i SCAN ALL the top 20 results and I am building the same backlinks. I mean from the same page. this what I can ofcource. but if you analyze them all you collect few good. rest I am buying them to pass my competitors. I am not an expert or whatever , so any advice will be appreciated. thanks

Hi Nikos, if this are sub domains it will not hurt your main side -
sub domains a treated separately.Harry

I think the best solution is to use rel cannonical in the head section. Do you tried it?
You will need to include in every page (pages you want to be the official one) inside the head tag the follow:
where ww.example.com/index.html is your page adress. Good luck!

Will we be penalised for duplicate content on a sub-domain?
Hi there, I run a WordPress blog and I use [community platform] Discourse for commenting. When we publish a post to Wordpress, a duplicate of that post is pushed to a topic on Discourse, which is on a sub-domain. Eg: The original post and the duplicated post. Will we be penalised for duplicating our own content on a subdomain? If so, other than using an excerpt, what are our options? Thanks!

Base copy on 1 page, then adding a bit more for another page - potential duplicate content. What to do?
Hi all, We're creating a section for a client that is based on road trips - for example, New York to Toronto. We have a 3 day trip, a 5 day trip, a 7 day trip and a 10 day trip. The 3 day trip is the base, and then for the 5 day trip, we add another couple of stops, for the 7 day trip, we add a couple more stops and then for the 10 day trip, there might be two or three times the number of stops of the initial 3 day trip. However, the base content is similar - you start at New York, you finish in Toronto, you likely go through Niagara on all trips. It's not exact duplicate content, but it's similar content. I'm not sure how to look after it? The thoughts we have are:1) Use canonical tags 3,5,7 day trips to the 10 day trip.

2) It's not exactly duplicate content, so just go with the content as it is We don't want to get hit by any penalty for duplicate content so just want to work out what you guys think is the best way to go about this. Thanks in advance!0 -
Duplicate Content Pages - A Few Queries..
I am working through the latest Moz Crawl Report and focusing on the 'high priority' issues of Duplicate Page Content. There are some strange instances being flagged and so wondered whether anyone has any knowledge as to why this may be happening... Here is an example; This page; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/destinations/cruise-breaks-&-british-isles/bruges/ ...is apparently duplicated with these pages; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/guides/excursions http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/guides/cruises-from-the-uk http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/norwegian-star-europe-cruise-deals Not sure why...? Also, pages that are on our 'Cruise Reviews' section such as this page; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-reviews/p&o-cruises/adonia/cruising/931 ...are being flagged as duplicated content with a page like this; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/destinations/cruise-breaks-&-british-isles/bilbao/ Is this a 'thin content' issue i.e. 2 pages have 'thin content' and are therefore duplicated? If so, the 'destinations' page can (and will be) rewritten with more content (and images) but the 'cruise reviews' are written by customers and so we are unable to do anything there... Hope that all makes sense?! Andy

Duplicate Multi-site Content, Duplicate URLs
We have 2 ecommerce sites that are 95% identical. Both sites carry the same 2000 products, and for the most part, have the identical product descriptions. They both have a lot of branded search, and a considerable amount of domain authority. We are in the process of changing out product descriptions so that they are unique. Certain categories of products rank better on one site than another. When we've deployed unique product descriptions on both sites, we've been able to get some double listings on Page 1 of the SERPs. The categories on the sites have different names, and our URL structure is www.domain.com/category-name/sub-category-name/product-name.cfm. So even though the product names are the same, the URLs are different including the category names. We are in the process of flattening our URL structures, eliminating the category and subcategory names from the product URLs: www.domain.com/product-name.cfm. The upshot is that the product URLs will be the same. Is that going to cause us any ranking issues?

Duplicate content issue - online retail site.
Hello Mozzers, just looked at a website and just about every product page (there are hundreds - yikes!) is duplicated like this at end of each url (see below). Surely this is a serious case of duplicate content? Any idea why a web developer would do this? Thanks in advance! Luke prod=company-081

Duplicate Content Question
Brief question - SEOMOZ is teling me that i have duplicate content on the following two pages http://www.passportsandvisas.com/visas/ and http://www.passportsandvisas.com/visas/index.asp The default page for the /visas/ directory is index.asp - so it effectively the same page - but apparently SEOMOZ and more importantly Google, etc treat these as two different pages. I read about 301 redirects etc, but in this case there aren't two physical HTML pages - so how do I fix this?

Finding Duplicate Content Spanning more than one Site?
Hi forum, SEOMoz's crawler identifies duplicate content within your own site, which is great. How can I compare my site to another site to see if they share "duplicate content?" Thanks!

Duplication Issue?
One of our copywriters has just written a blog to be posted on our own company blog to be reviewed by myself, however I had noticed that the blog post has some duplication issues with one of our own product pages, about 60% duplication, is it still worth posting? Will search engines still index the blog post? Kind Regards,
