Duplicate Content on Multinational Sites?
-
Hi SEOmozers
Tried finding a solution to this all morning but can't, so just going to spell it out and hope someone can help me!
Pretty simple, my client has one site www.domain.com. UK-hosted and targeting the UK market. They want to launch www.domain.us, US-hosted and targeting the US market.
They don't want to set up a simple redirect because
a) the .com is UK-hosted
b) there's a number of regional spelling changes that need to be made
However, most of the content on domain.com applies to the US market and they want to copy it onto the new website. Are there ways to get around any duplicate content issues that will arise here? Or is the only answer to simply create completely unique content for the new site?
Any help much appreciated!
Thanks

Hi Coolpink,
from what I've understood from your question the potential panorama for your client can be this:
- .com for UK
- .us for USA
- both sites with almost identical content.
If I was you, I would follow these best practices:
- On Google Webmaster Tools I'd specify that domain.com must geotarget UK only. Even though .com domains name are meant to be global, if you order Google to geotarget your site for a specific country, then it should follow your directive even if your domain is a generic domain name;
- Again on Google Webmaster Tools. I'd specify that the domain .us must geotarget the USA only territory. Be aware that .us is the Country Level Domain of United States (as .co.uk is the cTLD of UK), therefore Google should have to geotarget automatically domains with that termination to the USA.
- I don't know the nature of your client's site, but if it is an eCommerce, surely there local signals that you may or must use: currencies (Pounds and Dollars), Addresses, Phone Numbers.
- You write that cannot be merged the US and UK market also because of the regional spelling to change. This is a correct intuition, also in term of International SEO. So, when creating the new .us site, pay attention to this issue and remember to translate to American English those contents that were writting in British English (i.e.: analise > analize... ). These regional differences help a lot Google understanding the target of the site
- A good idea in order to reinforce the fact that the .com site is meant just for the UK market, it should be to add in this site the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" tag this way: <rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.domain.us">(please go read not at the end)</rel="alternate">
- BING > This page in the Bing’s Webmaster Center Blog (“How to tell Your Website’s Country and Language”) explains quite well what are the best practices to follow in order to have a site ranking in the regional versions of Bing. Actually the Metadata embedded in the document solution is the most important between the ones Bing suggests: should be the one to add in the .us site (target: USA)
Note well: the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" is a "page level tag", not domain.
That means that the home page will have:
<rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.domain.us">(as seen above)</rel="alternate">
That page "A" will have:
<rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.domain.us/page-equivalent-to-A"></rel="alternate">
and so on.

As of 3 years ago, Google wasn't filtering ccTLD sites for duplicate content. I haven't found anything indicated this isn't true anymore. Also, Rand had a good Whiteboard Friday on this very subject.
-
My experience was that well-researched copy tailored to the local market perfomed much better for non-brand terms. I don't use the .us tld, but I host all my sites in Norway and Google has not had any problems with my conuntry tlds such as .co.uk, .cn, .kr, etc.

Thanks for your reply Knut.
So you would advise against using the same copy?
Also, just to clarify, the .com is going to be the UK site, and they are planning on purchasing .us for the US site. Is this acceptable practice?
-
Even if the .com site is hosted in the UK, Google will figure out that .co.uk is for UK and .com is for the US customers. I manage two such sites, www.ekornes.com/us and www.ekornes.co.uk, and when the content was nearly duplicates we ranked well on brand-specific terms in both countries, but not well on non-brand or brand associated terms. The first thing wou want to do is to make the meta tags unique and follow up with unique content. You'll find that if you do your keyword research well, creating and unique content and tags becomes a lot easier as consumers use different words and lingo in different countries to find your product.

Fullsite=true coming up as duplicate content?
Hello, I am new to the fullsite=true method of mobile site to desktop site, and have recently found that about 50 of the instances in which I added fullsite=true to links from our blog show as a duplicate to the page that it is pointing to? Could someone tell me why this would be? Do I need to add some sort of rel=canonical to the main page (non-fullsite=true) or how should I approach this? Thanks in advance for your help! L

Duplicate Content
Crawl Diagnostics has returned several issues that I'm unsure how to fix. I'm guessing it's a canonical link issue but not entirely sure... Duplicate Page Content/Titles On a website (http://www.smselectronics.co.uk/market-sectors) with 6 market sectors but each pull the same 3 pages as child pages - certifications, equipment & case studies. On each products section where the page only shows X amount of items but there are several pages to fit all the products this creates multiple pages. There is also a similar pagination problem with the Blogs (auto generated date titles & user created SEO titles) & News listings. Blog Tags also seem to generate duplicate pages with the same content/titles as the parent page. Are these particularly important for SEO or is it more important to remove the duplication by deleting them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Duplicate Content Problem!
Hi folks, I have a quite awkward problem. Since a few weeks a get a huge amount of "duplicate content errors" in my MOZ crawl reports. After a while of looking for the error I thought of the domains I've bought additionally. So I went to Google and typed in site:myotherdomains.com The results was as I expected that my original website got indexed with my new domains aswell. That means: For example my original website was index with www.domain.com/aboutus - Then I bought some additional domains which are pointing on my / folder. What happened is that I also get listed with: www.mynewdomains.com/com How can I fix that? I tried a normal domain redirect but it seems as this doesn't help as when I am visiting www.mynewdomains.com the domain doesnt change in my browser to www.myoriginaldomain.com but stays with it ... I was busy the whole day to find a solution but I am kinda desperate now. If somebody could give me advice it would be much appreciated. Mike

Showing duplicate content when I have canonical url set, why?
Just inspecting my sites report and I see that I have a lot of duplicate content issues, not sure why these two pages here http://www.thecheapplace.com/wholesale-products/Are-you-into-casual-sex-patch http://www.thecheapplace.com/wholesale-products/small-wholesale-patches-1/Are-you-into-casual-sex-patch are showing as duplicate content when both pages have a clearly defined canonical url of http://www.thecheapplace.com/Are-you-into-casual-sex-patch Any answer would be appreciated, thank you

Duplicate Content on SEO Pages
I'm trying to create a bunch of content pages, and I want to know if the shortcut I took is going to penalize me for duplicate content. Some background: we are an airport ground transportation search engine(www.mozio.com), and we constructed several airport transportation pages with the providers in a particular area listed. However, the problem is, sometimes in a certain region multiple of the same providers serve the same places. For instance, NYAS serves both JFK and LGA, and obviously SuperShuttle serves ~200 airports. So this means for every airport's page, they have the super shuttle box. All the provider info is stored in a database with tags for the airports they serve, and then we dynamically create the page. A good example follows: http://www.mozio.com/lga_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/jfk_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/ewr_airport_transportation/ All 3 of those pages have a lot in common. Now, I'm not sure, but they started out working decently, but as I added more and more pages the efficacy of them went down on the whole. Is what I've done qualify as "duplicate content", and would I be better off getting rid of some of the pages or somehow consolidating the info into a master page? Thanks!

If two websites pull the same content from the same source in a CMS, does it count as duplicate content?
I have a client who wants to publish the same information about a hotel (summary, bullet list of amenities, roughly 200 words + images) to two different websites that they own. One is their main company website where the goal is booking, the other is a special program where that hotel is featured as an option for booking under this special promotion. Both websites are pulling the same content file from a centralized CMS, but they are different domains. My question is two fold: • To a search engine does this count as duplicate content? • If it does, is there a way to configure the publishing of this content to avoid SEO penalties (such as a feed of content to the microsite, etc.) or should the content be written uniquely from one site to the next? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Are RSS Feeds deemed duplicate content?
If a website content management system includes built-in feeds of different categories that the client can choose from, does that endanger them of having duplicate content if their categories are the same as another client's feed? These feeds appear on templated home page designs by default. Just trying to figure out how big of an issue these feeds are in terms of duplicate content across clients' sites. Should I be concerned? Obviously, there's other content on the home page besides the feed and have not really seen negative effects, but could it be impacting results?

Duplicate Content issue
I have been asked to review an old website to an identify opportunities for increasing search engine traffic. Whilst reviewing the site I came across a strange loop. On each page there is a link to printer friendly version: http://www.websitename.co.uk/index.php?pageid=7&printfriendly=yes That page also has a link to a printer friendly version http://www.websitename.co.uk/index.php?pageid=7&printfriendly=yes&printfriendly=yes and so on and so on....... Some of these pages are being included in Google's index. I appreciate that this can't be a good thing, however, I am not 100% sure as to the extent to which it is a bad thing and the priority that should be given to getting it sorted. Just wandering what views people have on the issues this may cause?
