Need help Tracking PPC vs Organic and respective ROI
-
So I have a client who uses PPC and Organic SEO to drive traffic. Once a user gets to the site, the most common action is to fill out a form.
I have Auto Tagging enabled in Adwords so all PPC clicks have "gclid" in the url.
I am also grabbing the Google Cookie and parsing it out to determine if the visitor is PPC or Organic.
So I have an if statement in my form code to pass PPC vs organic through the form for tracking purposes:
$url = 'http://' . $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
if (false !== strpos($url,'gclid')) { ?>
Essentially this is saying:
If gclid is in the url, or if the cookie contains PPC
set the Web field as PPC Else
Set it as Organic.this is working about 80% of the time. I am trying to raise the accuracy. any ideas where I might be missing some data?
thanks

You say that your solution works 80% of the time - how do you know that? Do you have any ideas for why it wouldn't work for the other 20% of the time? Here are some of my thoughts -
1. Not all of your leads will likely be generated by Google (organic or paid). Are you taking into account that visitors who come from a link on another website and fill out the form should not be tracked as Organic or PPC? It looks like your script is determining every visitor who doesn't come from AdWords should be counted as Organic, and that may be what is causing the discrepancies in your data.
2. What about visitors who come from a search on Yahoo or Bing? Are they being tracked as Organic in your script?
3. It's possible that some of your visitors have cookies and/or Google Analytics disabled so I can see that messing up your data if you are checking the GA cookie.
I can definitely understand the value in passing the source info along through your form, but it looks like your script might need a little finetuning to track more accurately. I have actually ran into similar issues before with trying to pass the source of the lead through the end of the sales funnel so I can determine which traffic sources/keywords generated conversions that resulted in sales without needing a full blown CRM and developed a free tool called Convertable which does exactly what I was looking for. If you are still having problems with your script, feel free to give it a try.

TJ,
Why send the source info through the form? Are you passing it your CRM or something?
I typically just utilize Google Analytics to track the source. You can set a custom variable with the lead's name into GA if you want to match up leads.The avantage is that you can also track other lead sources like organic, social, etc. in addition to PPC.
Of course, if you're doing really high volume, this isn't real efficient.

Time to purchase vs Time Lag for business cycle data
Hi All, Using just GA is it possible to get accurate information about buying cycle duration - i.e. length of time from first interaction to purchase? Time to purchase isn't what I'm looking for as it does not include direct visits. Time lag seems off as it suggests that the majority of conversions happen on day 0 (as does time to purchase). I know that any conversions outside of the time window default to 0 but I find it hard to believe that a clothing retailer has a similar buying cycle to a furniture store. Of course I could be wrong here, I'm making a big assumption. Neither report feels very robust to use for estimating split testing duration requirements. I know that there are other methods available, by comparing raw clickstream / cookie data but I do not have this data available, nor do I have the time to get it. Any info / advice would be great. Thanks

Help: Trouble converting customers with new adwords campaign for a new site
I have just launched my brand new e-commerce site www.zenory.co.nz We are wanting to expand global as you can see we have com.au and also .com but due to our min budget we had to start with NZ first for organic search and a min monthly budget on adwords which doesn't come close to what our competitors are paying. Really is it worth paying out our limited budget with adwords? Or should be put that into ranking organic search. While we have only just started our adwords PPC campaign and I think it has only been roughly two weeks - We have had around 18 people sign up, to which we have a 3 step process, however, we are struggling to convert and complete a transaction which customer places credit card details in step 3. Does anyone have any ideas around how we could better optimize or perhaps make any suggestions? Our competitors spend rather large amounts of up to 3000k - 300k per month on adwords, and there is just no competing with that. Any suggestions I would definitely be open to... Thanks alot

Goal Tracking in Google Analytics
Hi guys, I just want to ask if you have videos or blogs about setting up goal tracking using conversion page or a "thank you page" in Google Analytics. This will help me to get how many inquiries (from contact form) I am getting and for me to know where they came from using Google Analytics (countries, source/site they used, time on site, category page and landing page, etc.). #2 question - In case I don't have a "thank you" page, is it possible for me to get these "goals"? Do I need to insert a code in each of the "send" button in my contact form? Looking forward for a positive response from you guys. 🙂 Thanks, JC

Google Analytics e-commerce tracking on multiple pages
Hi, I work in the airline industry and we are trying to implement Google analytics on our site. We are at the stage of getting e-commerce tracking setup. The problem we face is that we have multiple receipt pages (booking confirmation pages in our case) instead of just one as most carts would have. These are completely independent of each other. My question is can I use the same e-commerce tracking code on each page or do I need to setup multiple trackers. I reviewed the documentation here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/ecommerce#multitracker however I'm unsure if multiple trackers are needed when using it on multiple pages or is this just for multiple trackers on the same booking confirmation page. any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Need Advice on Home page Conversion Rate Improvement - not much $$s
Anyone out there have some suggestions for how I can improve my home page and increase my lousy conversion rate? I've spent years on the content and SEO optimization of my site and very little time on making a home page that sells stuff. Caveat - I don't have the money to go to one of those fancy companies who do a complete makeover and charge in the tens of thousands. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Proper Landing Pages for PPC ads
One of our sites is for a local Promotional Products company that focuses on local big businesses to set up accounts with. We are trying to grow our customer base with this site through use of a PPC campaign, but are unsure of where to send them. We were thinking about a page with content about what we do and our contact information, or putting together videos with this information to send them to. Does anyone have any advice for a killer landing page that not only is good for getting conversions for promotional products through PPC, but also could get us organic traffic? Thanks in advance for the help!
