Wildly different topics on one domain? (hobby blogger)
-
Hello Mozzers,
Let's say I have a lot of knowledge about a range of different subjects, for example:
-
bicycle maintenance
-
wildlife photography
-
tennis racket re-stringing
-
brewing beer
-
windsurfing holidays
I would like to share all of my knowledge in blog format with lots of good content, instructions, videos etc.
What is the best way to set up my blogging empire?!...
a) Use separate domains for each subject:
www.BRANDbicyclemaintenance.com, www.BRANDbrewingbeer.com
b) Use one brand domain with sub directories:
www.BRAND.com/bicycle-maintenance/, www.BRAND.com/brewing-beer/
b) Use sub-domains:
bicyclemaintenance.BRAND.com, brewingbeer.BRAND.com
(I would like to achieve good rankings & traffic in order to generate a small income from these sites)

Reading your list of possible topics.....
-
bicycle maintenance
-
wildlife photography
-
tennis racket re-stringing
-
brewing beer
-
windsurfing holidays
I would register a domain like FunHog.com and attack.

I was thinking about this a bit myself recently.. I can see a few advantages to both options.
Advantages of the all in one approach:
Inbound links you get will benefit all your blogs.
If you get a link to a post about brewing beer, then a certain amount of the juice will be passed around the domain which will contribute towards ranking the rest of your content. Over time, as links amass, the DA of this all-in-one blog will be higher than that of the individual blog sites.
I'm not sure how you do it, but I would also find one site far easier to manage than juggling 5 or so of them.
Advantages of having separate domains:
All other things equal, then right off the bat **www.BRANDbicyclemaintenance.com will outrank **www.BRAND.com/bicycle-maintenance. ****The exact match domain and consistency of hyperlink anchor text within the site is likely to give you a headstart in the SERPs over the all-in-one domain.
If it was me I'd go with the all-in-one, on the basis that inbound links are harder to get than exact-match-domains - which you can always buy later. That said, I'd be really interested to hear from anyone with more experience doing this.

A couple of questions first:
You mention "BRAND" in all the examples. What is this Brand, how does it relate to the topics covered and what's it meant to mean to people? Why should they care? What's going to tie it together across all these disparate topics? Is there a common theme/view across all of these subject.
While they may all be very different, if the blogs are about your insights, you experience then maybe they deserve to be under one banner.
Do any of the topics you want to cover share the same audience?
If you want to achieve good rankings, then the key really is to write good quality content that people are going to want to read/share/link to. Creating this content takes time. Seriously think about how much time you have available, not just for writing, but research and promotion (guest blogging etc.)
Can you afford to spend the time required across all of these topics? Would it be better to focus on one and build that first. It's easier to write about something you absolutely love. To which topics can you bring new insights, unique point of view etc?
Think also about your return on investment - what's likely to give you a better return? One totally kick-ass, blog or lots of weaker ones.
What do you want to mean to the world. Do you want to be known as the go-to guy for "cycle maintenance?"
My suggestion again is to think about how you want to be perceived and then do whatever you need to do to be that person - but clearly set out your goals first. (Don't stop at "write blogs, make money")
You don't say what your background is, or if you've been blogging before or how much success you've had in the past, so I hope this helps.
Obviously there's a lot to consider, by my guy feeling would be to go with separate blogs on separate domains and give them each an appropriate/unique personality/look. The more blogs you create - the more you're diluting your attention.
Good luck!

Domain Masking SEO Impact
I hope I am explaining this correctly. If I need to provide any clarity please feel free to ask. We currently use a domain mask on an external platform that points back to our site. We are a non-profit and the external site allows users to create peer-to peer fundraisers that benefit our ministry. Currently we get many meta issues related to this site as well as broken links when fundraisers expire etc. We do not have a need to rank for the information from this site. Is there a way to index these pages so that they are not a part of the search engine site crawls as it relates to our site?

Decline in traffic and duplicate content in different domains
Hi, 6 months ago my customer purchased their US supplier and moved the supplier's website to their e-commerce platform. When moving to the new platform they copied the descriptions of the products from their site to the supplier's site so now both sites have the same content in the product pages. Since then they have experienced decrease in traffic in about 80%. They didn't implement canonical tag or hreflang. My customer's domain format is https://www.xxx.biz and the supplier's domain is https://www.zzz.com The last one is targeting the US and when someone from outside of the US wants to purchase a product they get a message that they need to move to the first website, the www.xxx.biz. Both sites are in English. The old site version of www.zzz.com, before the shit to the new platform, contained different product descriptions, and BTW, the old website version is still live and indexed under a subdomain of www.zzz.com. My question is what's the best thing to do in this case so that the rankings will be back to higher positions and they'll get back their traffic. Thanks!

Cross domain canonical issue
Hello fella SEOs! I have a very intriguing question concerning different TLDs across the same domain. For eg: www.mainwebsite.com, www.mainwebsite.eu, www.mainwebsite.au, www.mainwebsite.co.uk etc... Now, assuming that all these websites are similar in terms of content, will our lovely friend Google consider all these TLDs as only one and unique domain or will this cause a duplicate content problem? If yes, then how should I fix it? Thnx for your precious help guys!

Different Domain Structure & hyperlinks pointing to them_Need Clarification
Hi, I have a question regarding the Domain Structure and hyperlinks should point to. I know that all of the below domain/URL structure are different. The first thing I have read is that we should do 301 redirect from non www domain.com domain.com/ to www domain/site URL. www.domain.com www.domain.com/ What about the trailing slash, does the Google considers the building links to www.domain.com/ is same as with out trailing slash, www.domain.com Or we have to any 301 redirect for these domain URL format as well. Please clarify my doubt. The same doubt is there for these two URL Structure as well. http://www.domain.com (Root domain with out trailing slash) http://www.domain.com/ (Domain with trailing slash) And if I am concentrating on my Homepage what is the best URL structure to follow whether the root domain or the domain with trailing slash. Can someone please clarify above doubts Thanks Vicky

How to 301 multiple domain names to a single domain
Hey, I tried to find and answer to this seemingly simple question, but no luck. So, I have one domain name with a website attached to it. I also registered all the other domain names that are similar to it or have different extensions - I want to redirect all the other domain names to my one main domain name without getting penalised by the big G. It looks like this: www.mainsite.com - this is my main domain I also have www.mainsite.com.au, www.mainsite.org, and www.mainsite.org.au which I all want to just redirect to www.mainsite.com I have been told that the best way to do this is a 301 redirect, but to do that you need to make a CNAME for all the other domains that points to www.mainsite.com. My problem is that I cannot seem to create a CNAME record for http://mainsite.com - I have it working for http://www.mainsite.com but not the non www record. What should I be doing differently? Is it just my DNS provider is useless? Thanks, Anthony
