Setting up a Blog - Guest Authors
-
I am planning on setting up a blog in the next couple months. We would like to have 10 different categories that professionals can write about and submit articles. Any suggestions on which blogging software to put on the site. So far I have heard of WordPress and Joomla. (Not sure which is the best version) We want it to maybe have the bloggers logo or pictures, date, etc. None of us have had any experience with this so we needed some input.
I have been reading everywhere that blogging is huge for SEO and so I just wanted to improve ours plus maybe drive more traffic with a high level blog for professionals. Any ideas or even books that I should go purchase to study up. When we do this it would be great to get it set up properly from the get go.

I would recommend Wordpress for the same reasons as Moosa and Tommy.
As for books, I would suggest reading Content Rules as this not only discussing blogging but also other useful content such as Podcasts, Videos, Ebooks etc which can all boost SEO.
Best of luck in your blogging adventures! Enjoy.

I use Wordpress and recommend it to clients. As well as the advantages already listed you will find it very easy to set up author/contributor accounts for your regular writers in order to streamline the publishing process.

If I would be at your place and I would have given a choice to select one platform bwtween Wordpress and Joomal then my vote will be for Wordpress!
User and SEO Friendly:
WP is more user friendly not only for the user but SEO friendly URLs, SPAM filter for Comments, easy to create post and pages which is not that easy to use in Joomla and then they have so much issues with URLs that somehow contain duplicate URLs!
Plug-ins:
The plugin directory of WP is way bigger as compare to Joomla. With wordpress the admin have multiple choices on one thing which is rear in Joomla!
Fast and Quick Updates:
WP is up-to-date and takes you with the current environment! With Jommla this game is not that simple!
Customization:
With Joomla and WP the customization is possible but (thinking from a developer’s brain) Joomla is way more difficult as compare to WP as they contain clean and clear code!
These are just few out of many differences that you can come up with by simple Googling a bit about it!

Hi!
My recommendation is absolutely Wordpress. You get access to hundreds of great SEO plugins and it´s very easy to work with.
Reading and plugins for Wordpress - http://yoast.com/wordpress/.
Simple platform = more time for blogging.
Good Luck!

Deeper Levels = Lower Page Authority?
After migrating 8 sites into one last year, which went quite successfully, we're now looking into SEO much deeper and how we can improve overall. Something I have noticed is the deeper the pages, the longer the url, the lower the page authority. It almost halves for each level the page gets deeper. Is this true? And if so how can we combat this? I know content is key, but is there anything else we can do? Many thanks

Kill, pimp or cut loose? Ideas for a legacy ECommerce blog
Hi, I'm looking to revamp the fortunes of an ailing Fashion ECommerce blog, which once had an impact on SEO for the site which it linked to but now has fallen by the wayside. Blog sits here: www.mydomain.com/blog and links to products and categories on the ECommerce site www.mydomain.com. The blog has about 2000 posts on it written over the past 5 years, which are almost all rewritten content about existing stories, events or embedded youtube videos related to fashion on the Web. None of the blog topics are unique, but the posts have been rewritten well and in an entertaining way - i.e. it's not just a copy and paste. The blog is written on an old, proprietary platform and only has basic Social sharing. You can't comment on posts, or see "most popular" posts or tag clouds etc. It is optimised for SEO though, with fashion category tags, date archives and friendly URLs. The company badly needs a shot in the arm for its content marketing efforts - so we're looking into the creation of infographics and other types of high quality, sharable content with an outreach effort. Ideally I want this content to be hosted on the Ecommerce site, but am faced with a few options which I'd appreciate the community's view on: How I should handle the mix of the legacy content on /blog and the addition of new, "high quality" content? (Pimp v1) Leave the /blog exactly as is and add the new, high quality content as new posts to it. Invest in pimping the /blog UI so that it has features such as commenting/tag clouds etc. They could migrate the blog to Wordpress, but leave it on the same URL. (Cut loose) Leave the /blog alone, and start afresh with a new Wordpress blog for the new, high quality content. e.g. /News or news.mydomain.com. The old blog posts probably aren't worth bothering about, but it might be risky to delete them as there are a lot and are better off with them than without. (Pimp v2) Set up a new Wordpress blog (e.g. /News or news.mydomain.com) for the new content and move the old /blog content to it. 301 the old /blog posts to the new location. The depth of old content that exists will add weight to the new content from a user's perspective, but will seem sparse if published on its own. Not sure why I would do this, but it's an option... (Kill) Kill the old /blog content, start a new one for the new, high quality content. Maybe there's another option I haven't considered. Thanks in advance, George

Blog content - what to do, and what to avoid in terms of links, when you're paying for blog content
Hi, I've just been looking at a restaurant site which is paying food writers to put food news and blogs on their website. I checked the backlink profile of the site and the various bloggers in question usually link from their blogs / company websites to the said restaurant to help promote any new blogs that appear on the restaurant site. That got me wondering about whether this might cause problems with Google. I guess they've been putting about one blog live per month for 2 years, from 12/13 bloggers who have been linking to their website. What would you advise?

Opinions on Building Own Blog Network (Private Use Only)
With the lose of buildmyrank and many other services like this on the verge of extension I was looking at building a small blog network of my own for private use. Adsense and also 3 way linking. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this? I know this takes a ton of time to build but if anyone who's done something like this and wouldn't mind sharing some of their tips I would greatly appriciate it. Quick Question

Is it safe to register say 30 domains under the same person? Or would it be wiser to use whois protection to guard the names? Anyone else want to contribute their 2c to this strategy please be my guest.0 -
Guest Blogging Funny Problem!
Well it made me laugh and then cry a little after anyway. I have a keyword which is ranking page 1 position 7, I created a really nice article with content relevant to the keyword maybe around 600 words. I spent maybe half hour researching blogs on myblogguest looking for one that was based in the same country, had really good mozbar stats, even checked out how quickly other posts got indexed. I put 2 anchor text links in the article and managed to get the blogger to post the article. Next day checked the rankings and the post on the blog is now position 7, and has knocked me to position 8. I'm tempted to ask the blogger to change the title tag not to include my targeted keyword. Anyone got an advice on this?
