Should I Wait Until the "Dust Settles" on the Algorithm Update or Get Busy Now?
-
We were hit hard on both of our sites yesterday and can't afford to wait for the dust to settle, as some folks are advising. We have been attempting to work off a penalty on one of our sites by undergoing a massive (and expensive) link removal project over the last four months. We are on our third reconsideration request and, hopefully, this last round of link removal will have done the job. I'm hesitant to go in and "de-optmize" the site by changing title tags and changing the anchor text until the penalty is removed, but I'm not sure if that's the right plan of action. I am, however, going to dig into the non-penalized site and change some title tags and anchor text.
Any thoughts on this strategy would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Peter. I appreciate your feedback. We are going to move slowly until we get a response (or not) to our reconsideration request.

I'd echo Rand but will just add this. You've got two factors here:
(1) On the one hand, the "Penguin" update hit hard and it isn't going to go away, I expect. Google may make minor adjustments, but these could happen over weeks and months and the philosophy is here to stay. Keep in mind that we're over a year into Panda update snow. So, absolutely don't wait for the dust to settle.
(2) On the other hand, you're dealing with an existing penalty, and you do need to resolve that. Don't panic, in other words. Act decisively, but follow through on solving the current problem.
If you go changing things site-wide, like titles/URLs, it's going to be hard to get a clean read of the data. If you can, tackle the worst culprits proactively (a spammy home-page title, for example). Tackle anything that's obviously a win - dupe content is a great example - you know it isn't helping you. From a link-building perspective, diversify and show a positive forward path.
-
Cool - glad to hear you're having a positive experience. I think waiting until you hear from Google is a wise decision, too.
-
Rand, I appreciate your feedback. We have been doing this for 9 years, thought we were doing a fairly decent job of building a brand (until we took a hit) and plan to continue for the long term, so I think your advice on building the new site(s) is a good one.
Once Google responds (or doesn't) to our latest request, we'll make that decision. By the way, we have been using an SEOMoz-referred company to help us with link-removal and, despite Google's refusal to budge after a huge number of links have been removed, I think they're doing a very good job. I know what they're up against, so I'm hoping to be able to give them rave reviews once this is done.
-
Richard - this is just my personal opinion, and it's not based on a ton of recent experience (I haven't had sites banned/penalized by Google in a very long time now). However, my feeling is that if you've been hit by this update, it's a great catalyst for immediate change. I'd be thinking about all of the following:
- Is now the time to start a new site that's exclusively white hat?
- Can I salvage this site and what's involved in that?
- How do I get rid of the bad links?
- How do I explain all the things I've done to Google (through reconsideration) and are they likely to let me back in?
Obviously, it depends on your long/short term goals, why you're doing web marketing in the first place, what you want to accomplish in the next few years, etc. If you're in the short-term, make money on the web fast with as little effort as possible and don't want to build a brand, then it's a question of whether 301'ing the domain to a new one and trying some tactics Google's not-yet-devalued is better than trying reconsideration and removal of bad links.
If you're thinking long term and brand building and want to put in sweat equity now that might take years to pay off, I'd be thinking around the new domain vs. trying to salvage this one (or two).
Wish you luck whatever you choose!

Try to generate more natural looking links. Diversify your anchor text portfolio so it looks natural and continue with your link building efforts. Do it in a way like your grandma will do it. With or without www, capital letters in the domainname, same anchor texts to different urls, use as much reasonable permutations as possible when generating the anchor texts. Bring good quality links, links from PR, links from guest blogging, post even more unique and genuine content. That will pay off. You can become more focused once the "dust settles". If you wait you will be definitely losing time and you will still start at the same point where you are now.

Blog-posts pages are dominating in search console "Internal Links". Only home-page at top!
Hi all, Ours is WordPress website and we have a blog...website.com/blog/. All the important pages in the website are well linked from top and footer menu. But in our webmasters...internal links section, only homepage is at the top. Blog-posts are others followed by homepage. I wonder why blog pages are dominating our website pages. Please give your suggestions on this. Do you think Google will give more priority for the blog-posts than website pages as they are more linked technically? Thanks

Unnamed Update — February 4, 2015
Does anyone have any more information about this shift in the search rankings. For us it seemed to affect few SERPs but those it did impact were highly competitive. I have heard speculation that it had to to with whether your site was mobile friendly or not. I don't believe this to be the case however since it impacted us nagatively and we have been mobile friendly (per google's test) since a year before this update. https://mza.bundledseo.com/google-algorithm-change Our website has clean backlinks and all original content.

How to get global search results on Google ? Also, is it possible to get results based on some other geographic location?
I don't want results based on my geographic location. When I am in India, I don't want local search results. In fact, I want results which are not dependent on my current location. Also, can I change my current location to some other city and will it affect the results ? For eg: While I am in London, can my search results be modified as if I am sitting in New York ?

"We've processed your reconsideration request for www...." - Could this be good news?
Hey, We recently had a Google Penguin related links warning and I've been going through Google WMT and removing the most offensive links. We have requested resubmission a couple of times and have had the standard response of: "

Site violates Google's quality guidelines We received a request from a site owner to reconsider your site for compliance with Google's Webmaster Guidelines. We've reviewed your site and we still see links to your site that violate our quality guidelines. Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. We encourage you to make changes to comply with our quality guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results. If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request. If you have additional questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.
" On the 5th September after spending another couple more days removing the most prolific offenders we resubmitted the site again and again got the automated response saying they had received our request. A week later on the 13th September we got a slightly different response of : "
We've processed your reconsideration request We received a request from a site owner to reconsider how we index your site. We've now reviewed your site. When we review a site, we check to see if it's in violation of our Webmaster Guidelines. If we don't find any problems, we'll reconsider our indexing of your site. If your site still doesn't appear in our search results, check our Help Center for steps you can take. " I left it another couple of weeks to see if we'd get a slightly more in depth response however so far there has been nothing. I'll be honest in not being entirely sure what this means. The e-mails says simultaneously 'We've now reviewed your site' (as in past tense) but then continues with "If we don't find any problems" which suggests a future tense. I’m unsure from reading the e-mail whether they have indeed reviewed it (and just not told us the outcome) or whether it’s just a delayed e-mail saying that they have received the reconsideration request. Of course, if I received this e-mail off anyone other than Google I would have thought I was still in the dog house but the fact that it differs from the standard ‘Site violates Google’s quality guidelines’ message leads me to believe that something has changed and they may be happy with the site or at least happier than they were previously. Has anybody else received the latter message and has anybody managed to determine exactly what it means? Cheers guys!0 -
Algorithm Question
Hello, I'm trying to figure out why my site and a competitors site literally trade places in the SERPS every week? My site has a boatload of content with an active blog with a lot of links versus a competitor that has virtually no links, limited content, 404 errors on the site. The links I have are all natural links with the exception of directories like JoeAnt. The only thing their site has is Domain Age where as mines is 4 months old. Any insight?

"No Follow", C Blocks and IP Addresses combined into one ultimate question?
I think the the theme of this question should be "Is this worth my time?" Hello, Mozcon readers and SEO gurus. I'm not sure how other hosting networks are set up, but I'm with Hostgator. I have a VPS level 5 which (I think) is like a mini personal server. I have 4 IP addresses, although it is a C block as each IP address is off by one number in the last digit of the address. I have used 3 out of the 4 IP addresses I have been given. I have added my own sites (some high traffic, some start-ups) and I've hosted a few websites that I have designed from high paying customers. -one man show, design them, host them and SEO them With the latest Penguin update, and with learning that linking between C Block sites is not a great idea, I have "No Followed" all of the footer links on client sites back to my portfolio site. I have also made sure that there are no links interlinking between any of my sites as I don't see them in the Site Explorer, and I figure if they aren't helping, they may be hurting the rankings of those keywords. Ok, so...my question is: "I have one IP address that I'm not using, and I have a popular high traffic site sharing it's IP with 5 other sites (all not related niches but high quality) Is it worth it to move the high traffic site to it's own IP address even though making the switch would take up to 48hrs for process to take affect? -My site would be down for, at the most 2 days (1 and a half if I switch the IP's at night) Is this really worth the stress of losing readers? Will moving a site on an IP with 5 other sites help the rankings if it was to be on it's own IP? Thank you very much ps- I can't make it to MOZcon this year, super bummed

PageRank Updates Again
Toolbar PageRank updates seem quite frequent this year. When they did the re-update in July after Twitter stuff-up I thought they were going to settle down for a while. Now in August there is a new one. From what I can see the data is refreshed and the snapshot seems to originate from at least 29th July with the calculated values as recent as 25th July. I wonder why they're doing this and what they are up to...
