Putting blog excerpts in footer of every page?
-
I have roughly 150 non-blog pages and 500 articles in my blog.
The footer of every non-blog page includes excerpts from 3 blog posts selected at random from the inventory of 500.
The posts in the footer of each page change with every page refresh.
So, if you scroll to the bottom of any non-blog page, you'll see about 85 words for each of 3 randomly selected blog posts, with a link to the source article in the blog section of my site. Each page will link to 3 different posts.
One of my objectives is to drive visitors to some older blog content that has become buried deep in the archives over the years.
Question 1: In a post-Panda/Penguin world, is this a good or bad technique?
Question 2: Should the links to the full content in the blog use rel="nofollow"? Without it, the internal link structure for this part of the site looks pretty crazy and random - I assume nofollow would help make things look more orderly (and prevent my main non-blog pages from passing excess link juice to my blog).
Thoughts or comments?

On my site, I have a sidebar widget that links to 10 random pages on my site. I would love to have it link to 10 relevant pages on my site as EGOL suggests...It's on my list of things to program one day!
I do feel that these are helpful to me. The main reason why I like this widget is because I think it helps me keep my pages in Google's index. My site has over 3000 pages and I think many of them would end up in the supplemental index if they were not regularly linked to internally like they are.
Also, I have it set so that they link using my desired anchor text for the page. This may help somewhat in my SERPs for each page.
Oh, and all of these links are followed on my site.

I think that 45 words is too much. I would use a title. Or a title and a few words. Or, a title and a sexy sentence.
Last, a new question: Can you think of ANY good reason to put blog excerpts in a site-wide footer the way http://springboard.com/ and http://seoaware.com do?
Yes, but only until I had time to do something better.
-
Thanks for a very thoughtful reply; I agree that it's important to promote the best content, and I definitely do that.
I misspoke earlier - the excerpts are just the title and 45 words, not 85. Maybe 3 sentences. Do you still think this is a duplicate content risk?
Last, a new question: Can you think of ANY good reason to put blog excerpts in a site-wide footer the way http://springboard.com/ and http://seoaware.com do? I currently do it randomly; these other sites excerpt the latest posts.

These are in the footer? How many people are going all the way down there and clicking on them? I bet nobody. If nobody is clicking them then why do this?
I would run crazyegg on a few pages to see if anybody is clicking these links.
The footer of every non-blog page includes excerpts from 3 blog posts selected at random from the inventory of 500.
If you really want to get people into these posts your best bet would be to link to relevant rather than random? Don't you think?
Almost any blog that has 500 posts is going to have some really good ones and some real sleepers. I would focus on promoting the really good ones if you want people to click these.
Promote your best. Not random.
So, if you scroll to the bottom of any non-blog page, you'll see about 85 words for each of 3 randomly selected blog posts, with a link to the source article in the blog section of my site. Each page will link to 3 different posts.
Eighty five words for each? Wow... that is a lot... Way more than I would use. How a bout a title and ten words. Nobody is going to read these.
I think that you could run into duplicate content issues with this - even though they are shuffled randomly.
Question 1: In a post-Panda/Penguin world, is this a good or bad technique?
You can see my answers above. I think that the footer is bad location and I think that you should promote your best instead of random.
Question 2: Should the links to the full content in the blog use rel="nofollow"? Without it, the internal link structure for this part of the site looks pretty crazy and random - I assume nofollow would help make things look more orderly (and prevent my main non-blog pages from passing excess link juice to my blog).
I would not use nofollow on links within my own website. When you use nofollow the pagerank that would have flowed into those links evaporates. It is lost. Poof! Instead, allow the pagerank to flow into these pages and out through their links. If you nofollow you cut off the power.

Ben,
Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about the nofollow on the internal links.
Yes, the body of every page has unique content.
My entire site revolves around serving the needs of a specific type of individual, and the content in the body and the content in the blog work together to fill the information needs of the visitor - so hopefully yes, the blog content is relevant.
I see lots of websites incorporating a blog excerpt in the footers or sidebars of their pages (e.g., http://springboard.com/ and http://seoaware.com). The problem I have is that they almost always link to the most recent blog post(s), concentrating attention on a small subset of the blog inventory. That means older, still-relevant, still-useful content is getting neglected. That's the main thing I'm trying to overcome.
I do have good site search so people who know what they are looking for can find it - the problem is that many people don't know what they want until they see it.
Thanks again!

Question 2 first - I don't think there's any need for the no-follow at all. In fact I'm pretty certain Google have gone on record saying that you'll never need to no-follow with internal links.
Question 1 - If you've got some unique content in the main body of the page I wouldn't foresee it being a problem. However you should probably be asking yourself if it's actually of any use to the user? Is the content you're sending them to relevant to what they're looking for and is it improving their overall experience on your site?

Customer Reviews on Product Page / Pagination / Crawl 3 review pages only
Hi experts, I present customer feedback, reviews basically, on my website for the products that are sold. And with this comes the ability to read reviews and obviously with pagination to display the available reviews. Now I want users to be able to flick through and read the reviews to help them satisfy whatever curiosity they have. My only thinking is that the page that contains the reviews, with each click of the pagination will present roughly the same content. The only thing that changes is the title tags which will contain the number in the H1 to display the page number. I'm thinking this could be duplication but i have yet to be notified by Google in my Search console... Should i block crawlers from crawling beyond page 3 of reviews? Thanks

Why are crawlers not picking up these pages?
Hi there, I've been asked to audit a new subdomain for a travel company. It's all a bit messy, so it's going to take some time to remedy. However, one thing I couldn't understand was the low number of pages appearing in certain crawlers. The subdomain has many pages. A homepage, category pages then product pages. Unfortunately, tools like Screaming Frog and xml-sitemaps.com are only picking up 19 pages and I can't figure out why. Google has so far indexed around 90 pages - this is by no means all of them, but that's probably because of the new domain and lack of sitemap etc. After looking at the crawl results, only the homepage and category (continent pages) are showing. So all the product pages are not. for example, tours.statravel.co.uk/trip/Amsterdam_Kings_Day_(Start_London_end_London)-COCCKDM11 is not appearing in the crawl results. After reviewing the source code, I can't see anything that would prevent this page being crawled. Am I missing something? At the moment, the crawl should be picking up around 400+ product pages, but it's not picking up any. Thanks

Brand name as H1 on every page
Hi, Along with the title of each page, a Wordpress client has their brand name as a H1 on every single page. This is situated in the footer and just sits within the company info/address. Should these tags be removed, leaving just the page titles as H1s? Cheers, Lewis

Page Speed or Size?
Hi everyone. I have a client who really wants to add a 1min html5 video to the background of their homepage. I have managed to reduce the size of the video to 20MB and I have tested the page in pingdom. The results are 1.85 s to load, and weighed in at 21.2 MB. My question is does Google factor page load speed or size in it's ranking factors? I am also mindful of the negative effect this could have on bounce rate. Thanks.

"One Page With Two Links To Same Page; We Counted The First Link" Is this true?
I read this to day http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718 I thought to myself, yep, thats what I been reading in Moz for years ( pitty Matt could not confirm that still the case for 2014) But reading though the comments Michael Martinez of http://www.seo-theory.com/ pointed out that Mat says "...the last time I checked, was 2009, and back then -- uh, we might, for example, only have selected one of the links from a given page."
Technical SEO | | PaddyDisplays
Which would imply that is does not not mean it always the first link. Michael goes on to say "Back in 2008 when Rand WRONGLY claimed that Google was only counting the first link (I shared results of a test where it passed anchor text from TWO links on the same page)" then goes on to say " In practice the search engine sometimes skipped over links and took anchor text from a second or third link down the page." For me this is significant. I know people that have had "SEO experts" recommend that they should have a blog attached to there e-commence site and post blog posts (with no real interest for readers) with anchor text links to you landing pages. I thought that posting blog post just for anchor text link was a waste of time if you are already linking to the landing page with in a main navigation as google would see that link first. But if Michael is correct then these type of blog posts anchor text link blog posts would have value But who is' right Rand or Michael?0 -
Keyword links in footer
Hi - I am trying to help a site to get out from under a Google manual action penalty - down as "Partial Matches - Unnatural Links to site".
Technical SEO | | StevieD
I am checking through their links - the site that links most to them is a local directory style site - it has 2,682 links back into 1 page (Home) The directory site was built by the web co. that built my clients' site and they put a keyword link in the footer of the directory site - the keyword was "Buy Truffles". All my instincts say that is a bad thing! But - this is what is perplexing me - they are ranking no.1 for that keyword! Whereas they have lost rankings (i.e. not top 50) for all the other keywords they were targeting. So I don't get it! Can anyone explain why this is. I feel I should I get that link removed but don't want to take out their only ranking keyword! Webmaster shows about 55 different pages in the directory site have a link back to my client. Hope you can help.
Cheers - Steve0 -
Photo Attachment Page
Hi! I am using Wordpress, and when I click on my photos, they go to an attachment page that only shows the photo. However, in my SeoMoz crawl results, these are showing up as duplicate content page. Is it worth going back and changing all of my photos so they aren't clickable and therefore do not create a duplicate page? Thanks in advance! Jodi familytravelmagazine.com
