Rel Canonical - Could someone please help confirm something?
-
Morning Mozzers,
I'm looking at a site (www.zitan.co.uk) and making a few recommendations for SEO, one of the things I've spotted is something weird with rel canonical. It looks (to me) as if they've got almost every single page set with this tag:
rel="canonical" href="http://www.zitan.co.uk" />
I'm 99% certain that this means that every page on the site (that has this tag) is pointing all link juice / authority back to the homepage?
If someone could please check and just confirm that, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
James

Thanks folks - that's exactly what I was looking for, both much appreciated.
I've dropped their web dev's a quick email now - fingers crossed I get a sensible reply!
Cheers & thanks again

you are 100% correct they have pointed every single one of their pages to their homepage essentially. I look at rel="canonical tell Google what page should have the correct content I have checked your site as requested. Below I've pasted what I found in the source code of their about page. So it should be <link < span="">rel="canonical" href=http://www.zitan.co.uk/aboutus not what you see below </link <>
| "rel="canonical" href="http://www.zitan.co.uk" /> |
| | <title></span>About Zitan<span></title> |"
essentially all you have to do is go through and change the canonical the correct page after this I would go into Google Webmaster resubmit a site map and index with Google.
I hope I was of help you.
Sincerely,

Yes, it looks like they got their canonicals all wrong...
I think google will ignore the canonical tag in this situation. I remember Matt Cutts talking about if you got the canonicals all wrong Google would still index your site.

Tag Clouds in Google Despite Canonical Links for Single Tags/Articles
I am frustrated to see a lot tag clouds in Google even though I programmed my tagged pages to display a canonical link to the linking article if the is only one result for the tag cloud. The goal to to make sure that the article, which is of better quality than the tag page, ends up in Google without a bunch of thin tag pages getting in there. For instance this article should be in Google and this tag should not be because that tag has a canonical URL for that article. I do not have a lot of experience with tag cloud SEO because I prefer to limit such pages to categories, but I have found tag clouds to be important for aggregating information for specific issues, people, or places that are not already a site category. Some tags I have used to power social media pages that update automatically from RSS feeds for their related tag archives. That is quite useful for pages like that. Should I start using Meta noindex for those instead of rel canonical? I have already done that for author profiles because author profiles get a lot of on site links compared to individual articles because my gridviews use javascript for paging. The same is true for the tags, so if a tag is tagged in 30 articles it will have links from 30 articles but if those articles are not in the latest 20 for that tag only the latest 20 will have links back from the tag archive. I also suspect having a lot of tag pages with little content to negatively impact my indexing rate. I will see a number of recent tag pages added before new articles.

301 to canonical
I'm doing some work on a website, they have a very popular product search where you enter a specific part code (6 digits) and it takes you to the product. So for example Search: 123456 Page redirected to domain.com/product/123456 With a canonical of domain.com/product/this-is-the-product-title Would it be beneficial to redirect from /product/123456 to /product/this-is-the-product-title Google seems to be indexing both versions. For some of these products a reasonable amount of links are built.

Wordpress 'Hide Title' Feature, does this help shorten title length
Im wondering if anyone with some Wordpress experience can help me. I am using Yoast to create my page titles, but yet Moz tells me that my page titles including my actual page title tag which is 'dumfries wedding photography | Hemera Visuals' by clicking on the 'hide title' feature in wordpress will this in turn stop wordpress from automatically adding my page title and therfor bring my title length down drastically? And if so will I have to wait till google next crawls my page to see if this works? Kind Regards Cameron.

Too Many on page links! Will "NoFollow" for navigation help?
I am getting to many on page links ( for all my pages). Here is my website: http://www.websterpowerproducts.co.uk I think it is to do with the the navigation bar down the right hand side. I don't really want to get ride of this as it offers users a way of getting where they want without lots of clicking. I was wondering if adding a "NoFollow" tag to each of they links would stop the link juice getting diluted by the navigation bar. Many Thanks

Ok maybe im missing something.
Ok maybe im missing something. I signed up 5/2 I got a complete crawl within a few days. Good information im all excited to work on the changes. I made a bunch of changes to improve my site. Like I had to many on page links. I made a bunch of changes to fix that problem and some title tag problem. So now im waiting and waiting to see the changes that I made updated in my campaign and nothing. It said it was running a new crawl last thursday no changes show and then again this thursday now it says may 24 and last scan on the 12th. My title tag for my home page still shows the old title and I got the links way down I believe under 100 and it still show 200 to 300. It seems like im just not getting up to date information fast enough. To pay 99 bucks a month and after 2 weeks no changes seems odd. Maybe im doing something wrong can someone tell me if this is normal? I like the data but its not updating. I want to see that my changes are working and keep making changes and i cant keep waiting and waiting. Thanks for any ones help. Ken
