Internal Site Structure Question (URL Formation and Internal Link Design)
-
Hi,
I have an e-commerce website that has an articles section:
There is an articles.aspx file that can be reached from the top menu and it holds links to all of the articles as follows:
xxx.com/articles/article1.aspx
xxx.com/articles/article2.aspxI want to add several new articles under a new sections, for example a complete set of articles under the title of "buying guide" and the question is what would be the best way?
I was thinking of adding a "computers-buying-guides.aspx" accessible from the top menu / footer and from it linking to:
xxx.com/computer-buying-ghudes/what-to-check-prior-to-buying-a-laptop.aspx
xxx.com/computer-buying-ghudes/weight-vs-performance.aspx
etc.Any thoughts / recommendations?
Thanks

With an eCommerce site I would always recommend having as flat of a site architecture as possible. This make's it easy for the spiders to crawl and the users to find the content without having to dig or land through a SERP. If you are adding new content to your article section that you want to be unrelated to the existing content in the current sub-folder being used, then creating a directory to house the new content with a more descriptive sub-folder name is the best idea in my opinion. I would make sure to have the link in the header OR the footer but not both. Just design it for whatever makes sense from the user's end and you will be in good shape.
I would also recommend that you label the pages with the Google recommendation tags (rel=next, rel=prev, and the not-so-trusty rel="canonical") and identify those pages you don't want indexed with Bing URL Normalization.

Ok, on your current articles page, make sure you don't exceed 100 links on that page including all other site navigation. If you do, create a second articles page and start listing articles on that page to balance the load out for the regular articles section. If your getting likes and good feedback i would change that. If you ever had to, simply 301 redirect so you pass all the link juice to new page.
I think I would then create a new top level link under articles called buying guide and have that link to a buying-guide articles page where you can layout your buying guide articles in like fashion to your original articles landing page.
Hope that makes sense. I can see it in my mind but sometimes that's hard to put in type.

What I currently have is like your second suggestion, main page with many articles sections. However I have too many articles on it.
Besides, I believe that the guides section will be very good and is worth standing on its own.
The reason I'm not changing the structure of the existing articles is simply because the articles there already have many social signals (likes etc.) which I don't want to lose when I change the URL.

If your planning on adding several different article directories why not have a main articles link from main navigation, then have droop down menus for sub directory articles? So it would look something like this:
/articles/
/articles/buying-guide/
/articles/software/
/articles/hardware/
etc, etc, etc.
Or you could have your main articles landing page list all links under various sub categories with H tag titles separating the directories.

ECommerce website with link to manufactures site for ordering - Should these links be follow or no follow?
Dear Mozzers, I have a couple of questions regarding link juice and whether I should have do follow or no follow links ? We have an affiliate eCommerce website and on our product pages we have a "Order online " button which will go our subdomain on the manufactures site in order for the user to complete the online ordering process So it's - www.ourcompany.co.uk - "Order Online Button" - www.manufactuer.ourcompany.co.uk Should this " Order online Button" be a Follow or No Follow link ? I ask this as currently from looking at Majestic seo , these "order online " buttons on my product pages seems to be Follow links so am I losing potential link juice by sending it externally ? Am I correct in assuming by changing it to be no follows, I would increase the link juice going elsewhere internally? thanks Pete

Merging two sites to one Rel Can Question
Hi All, We have 2 brands (1 main 1 product as a satellite domain) that we're merging into our main brand. When doing a 301 redirect - should we redirect everypage of the product satellite to the new site or is 1 main redirect fine? I'm Confusing ....yep. Ill do an E.G www.nike.com & www.air-jordan.com we are now shutting down www.airjordan.com and will be migrating all the content to www.nike.com/air-jordan Just of course there will be other pages like air-jordan.com/order-now . Should i do a rel can from air-jordan.com/order-now to www.nike.com/air-jordan/order-now ? Or is simply a 301 from www.airjordan.com to www.nike.com/air-jordan sufficient? Cheers!

Google Manual Penalty - Unnatural Links FROM My Site - Where?
Hi Mozzers, I've just received a manual penalty for one of my websites. The penalty is for 'unnatural links from my site which I find disturbing because I can't see that anything really wrong with it. The website is www.lighting-tips.co.uk - its a pretty new blog (only 6-7 posts) and whilst I've allowed guest posting I'm being very careful that the content is relevant and good quality. I'm only allowing 1 - 2 links and very few with proper anchor text so I'm wondering what has been done so wrong that I'm getting this manual penalty? Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance. Product URL structure for a marketplace model
Hello All. I run an online marketplace start-up that has around 10000 products listed from around 1000+ sellers. We are a similar model to etsy/ebay in the sense that we provide a platform but sellers to list products and sell them. I have a URL structure question. I have read http://www.seomoz.org/q/how-to-define-best-url-structure-for-product-pages which seems to show everyone suggests to use Products: products/category/product-name Categories: products/category as the structure for product pages. Because we are a marketplace (our category structure has multiple tiers sometimes up to 3) our sellers choose a category for products to go in. How we have handled this before is we have used: Products: products/last-tier-category-chosen/product-name (eg: /products/sweets-and-snacks/fluffy-marshmallows) Categories: products/category (eg: /products/sweets-and-snacks) However we have two issues with this: The categories can sometimes change, or users can change them which means the links completely change and undo any link building work built up. The urls can get a bit long and am worried that the most important data (the fluffy marshmallow that reflects in the page title and content) is left till too late in the URL. As a result we plan to change our URL structure (we are going through a rebuild anyhow so losing old links is not an issue here) so that the new structure was: Products: products/product-name(eg: /products/fluffy-marshmallows) Categories: products/category (eg: /products/sweets-and-snacks) My concern about doing this however, and question here, is whether this willnegatively impact the "structure" of pages when google crawls our marketplace.Because "fluffy marshmallows" will no longer technically fit into the url structure of "sweets and snacks". I dont know if this would have a negative impact or not. FYI etsy (one of the largest marketplace models in the world) us the latter approach and do not have categories in product urls, eg: listing/42003836/vintage-french-industrial-inspired-side Any ideas on this? Many thanks!

Internal links in blog posts?
What's the best strategy for internal links in a blog post? Example, if I write a blog should I always place a link to the main site at the bottom when I place my signature and contact info? Should I just put links in the content? Or should I do both?

Sitewide Header Link to Sister Site
Hi, I've just added a sitewide header image link (60 pages) from our general company site pointing to homepage of another brand site of a product that we also own (which focuses in depth on that one brand). I haven't put a nofollow on it as it's just info for those who'd like to reach our other site. Should I expect anything negative out of this for either site? Could it seem like it picked up 60 image links suddenly and raise a flag?

Google giving me only partial site links?
Hi Guys, My site is #1 ranked for the term "waiting till marriage," but Google only gives me partial site links. See "Forums - Articles - Questions - Videos" links in attached screenshot. How do I get the full, page-dominating, mini-description-having site links? Any suggestions? Note: I've got a ton of content and decent traffic, but I haven't put much time into developing back links yet. I'm a php developer, but I'm new to professional-level SEO. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Also, sorry about the inflammatory nature of the site. It's not a preachy site; it's just a support group. Hope it doesn't offend. partial-sitelinks.png
