Can literally any site get 'burned'?
-
Just curious what people think. The SEOMOZ trust on my site has gone up, all while Google is dropping us in rankings for lots of keywords.
Just curious if this can happen to anyone or once you are 100% 'trusted' you're good.
We went from 120,000 page views down to about 50,000. All while doubling content, improving the design(at least from a user perspective), and getting more natural links.
Seems counter intuitive to Google's mantra of ranking quality.
I would guess 'authority' sites never get hit by these updates right? So when you make it you've made it.(at least from a dropping like a rock perspective, obviously you have to keep working).
I'm guessing we just need a bunch more quality links but would hate to work on building links, quality content, trust etc for it to be something so finicky long term.

I see NASA.gov being beaten for quotes from their own content - sometimes even a quote of their title tag. So many people scrape their content or republish it verbatim.
A city newspaper near me had a lot of pages of crappy content. They simply posted a page for every business around with biz name, phone address and couple other pieces of info. These were really skinny pages. Their rankings have been in the dumps and I think these skinny pages are the reason.

i think any site can take a hit. it doesn't have to be a punishment, even just a minor tweak to the algo could knock a page down a ranking or two. that alone could be thousands of visitors. or maybe the tweak makes a competitor rank better and puts them above you.

From my experience I see that every site no matter how big or small is vulnerable. I'm a Realtor and my focus is to get that coveted top spot on page 1. Currently I'm in the number 7 spot for one of my main keywords and for other keywords I'm high on page 1 or on page 2.
Now who is on top? the national brands. But even they get impacted because they compete against each other and for some terms I beat them in the SERPS. I use Long Tail Keywords in order to do this.
Now, Google is fine tuning their search bots and there will of course be movement up and down for some sites. The thing to remember is to make sure you focus on the long term.

Can't crawl website with Screaming frog... what is wrong?
Hello all - I've just been trying to crawl a site with Screaming Frog and can't get beyond the homepage - have done the usual stuff (turn off JS and so on) and no problems there with nav and so on- the site's other pages have indexed in Google btw. Now I'm wondering whether there's a problem with this robots.txt file, which I think may be auto-generated by Joomla (I'm not familiar with Joomla...) - are there any issues here? [just checked... and there isn't!] If the Joomla site is installed within a folder such as at e.g. www.example.com/joomla/ the robots.txt file MUST be moved to the site root at e.g. www.example.com/robots.txt AND the joomla folder name MUST be prefixed to the disallowed path, e.g. the Disallow rule for the /administrator/ folder MUST be changed to read Disallow: /joomla/administrator/ For more information about the robots.txt standard, see: http://www.robotstxt.org/orig.html For syntax checking, see: http://tool.motoricerca.info/robots-checker.phtml User-agent: *

Should I just redirect all my sites to my main site.
Hi, Over the last few years I have built many sites and own a lot of domain names. Some have high page rank some have high domain authority and some have many back links. I'm finding it very difficult to keep up with all the links and being able to provide quality content for everything. Should I just redirect everything to my one site that make the most money as all sites are for the same industry, but in different categories of that industry. So I could 301 redirect all the sites to the relevant page on my money site. Would it be a problem is 1000's if not 10,000's of links all of a sudden pointed in to one site?

Is a Rel Canonical Sufficient or Should I 'NoIndex'
Hey everyone, I know there is literature about this, but I'm always frustrated by technical questions and prefer a direct answer or opinion. Right now, we've got recanonicals set up to deal with parameters caused by filters on our ticketing site. An example is that this: http://www.charged.fm/billy-joel-tickets?location=il&time=day relcanonicals to... http://www.charged.fm/billy-joel-tickets My question is if this is good enough to deal with the duplicate content, or if it should be de-indexed. Assuming so, is the best way to do this by using the Robots.txt? Or do you have to individually 'noindex' these pages? This site has 650k indexed pages and I'm thinking that the majority of these are caused by url parameters, and while they're all canonicaled to the proper place, I am thinking that it would be best to have these de-indexed to clean things up a bit. Thanks for any input.

Any reasons why social media properties are ranking higher than the site's own name?
The site below has social media properties and other sites coming up before it's own listing even for the exact search of the site name. Any ideas why this is happening? Link Any input is appreciated.

How is my 301 redirected site stealing rankings from the main site?
Hello, I have a site, drhobelt.com, that 301 redirects to the main site, drhonow.com. Not only is drhobelt.com still indexed, but it recently stole rankings from drhonow.com for "decompression belt" related terms. What could be causing this? How do I reclaim the rankings for drhonow.com? Thanks for reading!!

Is there a way to find out how many 301 redirects a site gets?
If you do a search on "personal loans" on Google the first non-local/personal result is onemainfinanical.com. They have far fewer links showing in OSE and YSE than the other sites. I know onemainfinanical.com is a Citbank site so I'm trying to determine if they are ranking so high b/c they are getting 301 link juice from old Citibank.com authority pages. Is there anyway to check to see what sites are sending link juice through a 301 redirect instead of a direct link?

Yoast meta description in ' ' instead of " " problem
Hi Guys this is really strange, i am using yoast seo for wordpress on two sites. On both sites i am seeing meta name='description' instead of meta name="description" And this is why google is probably not reading it correctly, on many other link submission sites which read your meta data automatically say site blocked. How to i fix this? Thanks
