Sitemaps and subdomains
-
At the beginning of our life-cycle, we were just a wordpress blog. However, we just launched a product created in Ruby. Because we did not have time to put together an open source Ruby CMS platform, we left the blog in wordpress and app in rails.
Thus our web app is at http://www.thesquarefoot.com and our blog is at http://blog.thesquarefoot.com. We did re-directs such that if the URL does not exist at www.thesquarefoot.com it automatically forwards to blog.thesquarefoot.com.
What is the best way to handle sitemaps? Create one for blog.thesquarefoot.com and for http://www.thesquarefoot.com and submit them separately?
We had landing pages like http://www.thesquarefoot.com/houston in wordpress, which ranked well for Find Houston commercial real estate, which have been replaced with a landing page in Ruby, so that URL works well. The url that was ranking well for this word is now at blog.thesquarefoot.com/houston/? Should i delete this page? I am worried if i do, we will lose ranking, since that was the actual page ranking, not the new one.
Until we are able to create an open source Ruby CMS and move everything over to a sub-directory and have everything live in one place, I would love any advice on how to mitigate damage and not confuse Google.
Thanks

We just submitted a new sitemap to google for our new rails app -
http://www.thesquarefoot.com/sitemap.xml
Which has over 1,400 pages, however Google is only seeing 114. About 1,200 are in the listings folder / 250 blog posts / and 15 landing pages.
Any help would be appreciated!

For sitemaps I'd try creating a single sitemap on thesquarefoot.com which includes the blog.subdomain.
You'll need to make sure that the subdomain is verified in GWMT and you'll also want to include the sitemap inthe robots.txt for both subdomain and root domain.
With regard to your landing pages I would 301 redirect the old landing page to the new one rather than deleting it.

Google Webmaster Tools -> Sitemap suddent "indexed" drop
Hello MOZ, We had an massive SEO drop in June due to unknown reasons and we have been trying to recover since then. I've just noticed this yesterday and I'm worried. See: http://imgur.com/xv2QgCQ Could anyone help by explaining what would cause this sudden drop and what does this drop translates to exactly? What is strange is that our index status is still strong at 310 pages, no drop there: http://imgur.com/a1sRAKo And when I do search on google site:globecar.com everything seems normal see: http://imgur.com/O7vPkqu Thanks,

To include in Sitemap or not to include?
Hello all, A bit of a confusing one but please bear with me... On our website we have a Used Cars section where each morning a feed is loaded onto our site with any changes to the stock. Some cars may have been sold and removed, some new cars may be added, some prices may be changed, every day every morning this very large section of our website is updated. The question I have is, should I be including these urls in my sitemap? The Used Cars section is a huge portion of our website content and is our most important area, the Used Cars overview is our most frequently visited page. The reason I ask is because of course Google might crawl and see car X, but tomorrow car X could be gone and be replaced with car Y. Should I be even mentioning these pages to Google if by tomorrow some of those urls could be gone? It's always changing and it's something we don't have control of. Thanks!

Getting into Google News, URL's & Sitemaps
Hello, I know that one of the 'technical requirements' to get into google news is that the URL's have unique numbers at the end, BUT, that requirement can be circumvented if you have a Google News Sitemap. I've purchased the Yoast Google News Sitemap (https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/news-seo/) BUT just found out that you cannot submit a google news Sitemap until you are accepted into google news. Thus, my question is that do you need to add the digits to the URL's temporarily until you get in and can submit a google news sitemap, OR, is it ok to apply without them and take care of the sitemap after you get in. If anyone has any other tips about getting into Google News that would be great! Thanks!

Any Good XML Sitemaps Generator?
I was wondering if everyone could recommend what XML Sitemap generators they use. I've been using XML-Sitemap, and it's been a little hit and miss for me. Some sites it works great, other it really has serious problems indexing pages. I've also uses Google's, but unfortunately it's not very flexible to use. Any recommendation would be much appreciated.

Subdomain or folder for a section not focused on my core business
Hello there, I'm installing your analytics tool and it seems really great. I'm gonna use it for sure but I've a question that is more strategic and it's something the tool can't help me with 😛 I've a website active from 2008 and really well known in my country as a service website... we're like your "advisor" for utilities and insurances. The reason why is "savings" but really focused on utilities (broadband, gas, electricity) and check accounts or insurances. I’ve always used folders in my URLs instead of subdomains (for example www.site.com/section1 or www.site.com/section2 ). In this period I’m planning to open a new website section related to saving but not really close with what we really do in the rest of the website. This section is about coupons, vouchers and little offers. The problem is that with that section I’m going to write really a lot (a lot) of content trying to gain a lot of external links. It’s obvious that I already have a lot of contents about my core business and I’m going to write contents for original categories too. This section is anyway secondary for my business and my worry is that Google can identify me in the future as a website mainly focused on this new product. I’m really well indexed so I don’t want this decision to have any effect on my original situation. Finally the question 😛 Is it better to maintain for this section the same website structure with folders or indentify it as a subdomain to remark that it’s going to be like a totally different site with his dedicated news and all the rest? That’s why I’m evaluating a subdomain but I’m not really convinced cause subdomains can be considered as a different approach compared to original structure and of course using folder can be useful to gain root’s site rank. On the other hand, what can Google think about my core business? Thanks a lot for your help

Mobile Site - Same Content, Same subdomain, Different URL - Duplicate Content?
I'm trying to determine the best way to handle my mobile commerce site. I have a desktop version and a mobile version using a 3rd party product called CS-Cart. Let's say I have a product page. The URLs are... mobile:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | grayloon
store.domain.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.catalog#products.view&product_id=857 desktop:
store.domain.com/two-toned-tee.html I've been trying to get information regarding how to handle mobile sites with different URLs in regards to duplicate content. However, most of these results have the assumption that the different URL means m.domain.com rather than the same subdomain with a different address. I am leaning towards using a canonical URL, if possible, on the mobile store pages. I see quite a few suggesting to not do this, but again, I believe it's because they assume we are just talking about m.domain.com vs www.domain.com. Any additional thoughts on this would be great!0
