What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to build URL links too dilute link profile???
-
One of my sites has a very spamy link profile, top 20 anchors are money keywords. What are your thoughts on using Dripable, VitaRank, or similar service to help dilute the link profile by building links with URLs, Click Here, more Info, etc.
I have been building URL links already, but due to the site age(over 12 years) the amount of exact match anchor text links is just very large and would take forever to get diluted.
-
Unfortunately, a lot of those links you may have a very hard time removing. They were probably part of a network that was used to sell links, and the webmaster does little or no upkeep. I also know that some webmasters or companies will ask you for money to remove the links.
Another problem is, you have to do A LOT of research to determine which links are hurting you to the best of your ability, Otherwise, if you go about it with carpet bombing approach, you might remove some links that are actually helping you. This will cause more harm.
Given your difficult situation, this is what I would do:
-
Article directories : remove all duplicate copies of articles and leave ONE copy on the best site, i.e Ezinearticles. You may even want to remove them all and put them on your own site if it is a real quality article.
-
Try to remove as many forum comments, spammy profile links.
-
Other links (i.e blog posts, etc) - for each keywords/page affected, find the the backlinks to that page. Use OSE AND Webmaster tools. WEBMASTER TOOLS IS YOUR FRIEND HERE. Google is telling you which links are being pointed to your site. If you know if a spammy link, and Google is not showing in the links to your site, you better focus your energy elsewhere.
Make a list of these sites, and examine the site: spammy jibberish content; excessive links pointing out; their backlinks (they may 100s of backlinks with spammy keywords like "viagra" or "payday loans," this is a red flag that the site is likely hurting you); links to pills, gambling, and porn.
Approach the sites via contact, email, and whois contact. Document ALL correspondence and attempts to clean up.
Once you feel you have done all you can, send Google another reconsideration request with all the documenting as you can (be thorough). Specifically, tell them which links you have made good faith attempts to remove and have been unsuccessful.
Hopefully, they will lift the penalty or let it expire.

What you seem to be talking about is the reconsideration request. If he has not gotten a message from Google warning about unnatural links it is probably a bad idea to file a reconsideration request.

Thanks for the response, that is what i thought too, but don't know what else to do. The top 20 anchors are exact match keywords. the first occurrence of a generic anchor or url anchor isn't until about 21-25 depending on what tool i use to check the link profile. I need a large number of URL links in different variations mysite.com, www.mysite.com, http://www.mysite.com, click here, etc, etc. I have already removed all links I could, contacted 100s of webmasters to remove links, most successfully, some never answered. i have detailed this and sent in a reconsideration request and google replied that they STILL saw unnatural links. What would you do in a situation like this? I'm running out of ideas and would appreciate some good advice.
-
Thanks for the response. I guess i was hoping someone had used a service like the ones i mentioned and had some tips or experiences with them to share. I realize that i should not be spamming, but i really don't think i can build enough links to dilute the link profile without some service like this, and the site is completely out of google's top 50 for all the money keywords, and supporting keywords. Traffic is down from 1500 visitors a day to about 200, need to get some traffic ASAP. Don't have to much time left to wait for some signs of recovery

I hope that all of my competitors are using this stuff. I think that it is just like dipping a crappy link profile in really cheap chocolate and telling Google its a Snickers bar. It will not take them long to find out.

Joel,
Thanks for the response. We used to rank very well in a highly competitive vertical, all the websites that used to compete with us are in our same position, we were in such a highly competitive industry that everyone who used to rank was doing AGGRESSIVE SEO campaigns, not necessarily black hat, but very aggressive white/grey hat . We probably were guilty of some other on page grey hat techniques, which have been fixed since. I believe that we are being penalized for excessive anchor text optimization and I'm hopping some generic or URL links might help us dilute our anchor text distribution enough to get below the exact match % limit and get out from the penalty. does this make any sense to you??

What I would do is first determine if the spammy links have had an impact on your SERPS. You can have a crazy amount of low pr links but if you have some golden links in there you should be fine. Google most likely is already discounting those spammy links but because of your domain age and if you have high quality links you should be fine. Now if you confirm that those links are causing you harm ( perform a site audit ) then you can use googles webmaster tools to send google a message that you have attempted to have those links removed. Obviously you should actually attempt to remove them and keep a log. Hope this helps. Good luck.
-
That might solve part of your problem. Unless you know that excessive use of targeted anchor text is your ONLY problem, then this might not be a good idea. It is likely that if you have a "spammy profile," then you have links from spammy sites. Going out there and spamming some more doesn't sound like a good long term solution.
Even if anchor text was your only problem, you might cause other problems by aggressively getting "easy links."
Find the keywords that were hit hardest and actually delivered traffic. If you can identify the worst links for that page/keyword (i.e spammy sites linking to porn, pills, or gambling), then remove them to the best of your ability. Then try to add some useful content to the page itself. Then promote that content to related sites. It will take time, but it is the right answer.
Good luck!

How to deal with parameter URLs as primary internal links and not canonicals? Weird situation inside...
So I have a weird situation, and I was hoping someone could help. This is for an ecommerce site. 1. Parameters are used to tie Product Detail Pages (PDP) to individual categories. This is represented in the breadcrumbs for the page and the use of a categoryid. One product can thus be included in multiple categories. 2. All of these PDPs have a canonical that does not include the parameter / categoryid. 3. With very few exceptions, the canonical URL for the PDPs are not linked to. Instead, the parameter URL is to tie it to a specific category. This is done primarily for the sake of breadcrumbs it seems. One of the big issues we've been having is the canonical URLs not being indexed for a lot of the products. In some instances, the canonicals _are _indexed alongside parameters, or just parameter URLs are indexed. It's all very...mixed up, I suppose. My theory is that the majority of canonical URLs not being linked to anywhere on the site is forcing Google to put preference on the internal link instead. My problem? **I have no idea what to recommend to the client (who will not change the parameter setup). ** One of our Technical SEOs recommended we "Use cookies instead of parameters to assign breadcrumbs based on how the PDP is accessed." I have no experience this. So....yeah. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Redirect closed shop to main shop, or keep the domain and content alive and use it for link building?
Hello, We used to have two shops selling our products, a small shop with a small selection of only our best quality products (domain smallshop.com), and a big shop with everything (bigshop.com). It used to make sense (without going into full detail), but it's not relevant anymore, and so we decided to stop maintaining the small shop, because it was time consuming and not worth it. There is some really good links pointing to smallshop.com, and the content is original (the product descriptions are different between both shops). So far, we just switch the "add to cart" button on the small shop into a link to the same product on the big shop, and did links from the small shop to the big shop also on categories pages. So the question is: in your opinion, is it better to do that, keep the small shop and content alive and build links to our big shop, or do 301 redirections and shut down completely the small shop ? Thanks for your opinion!

If I put a piece of content on an external site can I syndicate to my site later using a rel=canonical link?
Could someone help me with a 'what if ' scenario please? What happens if I publish a piece of content on an external website, but then later decide to also put this content on my website. I want my website to rank first for this content, even though the original location for the content was the external website. Would it be okay for me to put a rel=canonical tag on the external website's content pointing to the copy on my website? Or would this be seen as manipulative?

Using a US CDN (Cloudflare) for a UK Site. Should I use a UK Based CDN as it says my server is based in USA
Hi All, We are a UK Company with Uk customers only and use CloudFlare CND. Our Site is hosted by a UK company with servers here but from looking online and checking where my site is hosted etc etc , some sites are telling me the name of our UK Hosted company and other sites are telling me my site is hosted in San Fran (USA) , where I presume the Cloudflare is based. I know Cloudflare has a couple of servers in the UK it uses but given all my customers are UK based ,I don't want this is affect rankings etc , as I thought it was a ranking benefit to be hosted in the country you are based. Is there any issue with this and should I change or is google clever enough to know so i shouldn't worry. thanks Pet

What link building techniques would you recommend for a dating site?
I am working on adding more content to the site (content marketing, trying to attract natural links), and this includes a blog. On-site optimization will be done based on good keyword research, and after that I will be working on link building for the site. I will pull backlink data of competing best performing dating websites, google-wise, and try to get some links from there. What other link building strategies / techniques could be good for this? Thanks.

Does Google Read URL's if they include a # tag? Re: SEO Value of Clean Url's
An ECWID rep stated in regards to an inquiry about how the ECWID url's are not customizable, that "an important thing is that it doesn't matter what these URLs look like, because search engines don't read anything after that # in URLs. " Example http://www.runningboards4less.com/general-motors#!/Classic-Pro-Series-Extruded-2/p/28043025/category=6593891 Basically all of this: #!/Classic-Pro-Series-Extruded-2/p/28043025/category=6593891 That is a snippet out of a conversation where ECWID said that dirty urls don't matter beyond a hashtag... Is that true? I haven't found any rule that Google or other search engines (Google is really the most important) don't index, read, or place value on the part of the url after a # tag.

Lots of incorrect urls indexed - Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site
Hi, Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Basically, our rankings and traffic etc have been dropping massively recently google sent us a message stating " Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site". This first highligted us to the problem that for some reason our eCommerce site has recently generated loads (potentially thousands) of rubbish urls hencing giving us duplication everywhere which google is obviously penalizing us with in the terms of rankings dropping etc etc. Our developer is trying to find the route cause of this but my concern is, How do we get rid of all these bogus urls ?. If we use GWT to remove urls it's going to take years. We have just amended our Robot txt file to exclude them going forward but they have already been indexed so I need to know do we put a redirect 301 on them and also a HTTP Code 404 to tell google they don't exist ? Do we also put a No Index on the pages or what . what is the best solution .? A couple of example of our problems are here : In Google type - site:bestathire.co.uk inurl:"br" You will see 107 results. This is one of many lot we need to get rid of. Also - site:bestathire.co.uk intitle:"All items from this hire company" Shows 25,300 indexed pages we need to get rid of Another thing to help tidy this mess up going forward is to improve on our pagination work. Our Site uses Rel=Next and Rel=Prev but no concanical. As a belt and braces approach, should we also put concanical tags on our category pages whereby there are more than 1 page. I was thinking of doing it on the Page 1 of our most important pages or the View all or both ?. Whats' the general consenus ? Any advice on both points greatly appreciated? thanks Sarah.

Should I shorten my urls?
For my informational site I have a lot of urls that are way too long. When I first created the site, I wrote a script that takes out the common words of a post and fashions a url. So, for example, if the first few words of a question were: Hi there, I have a question about back pain. I'm wondering what drugs would be good for relief and how I can get some help? then my url may be: www.mydomain.com/question?id=123-question-back-pain-wondering-drugs-good-relief-how-get-some-help Once I got learning about seo I realized that these urls were too long but I never did anything about them. Should I be shortening these, or is my time best spent doing something else?
