Need advice on having customer stores running on my subdomain
-
We have an online store product and we're working on the SEO for our new domain (foo.com in this example.) Our customers have the ability to change the domain of their store but many of them will likely stick with the subdomains we give them (store1.foo.com)
We could potentially have thousands of stores soon using our subdomain. Each of these stores will have a very small link at the bottom to our own domain but other than this, the content is completely user-generated and not under our control.
Are there risks/problems associated with this type of strategy? If so, could we perhaps avoid them by using robots.txt to block entire site until they change to their own domain?
TIA,
Sean

First off, the biggest concern will be spammers. Use a good captcha system like reCaptcha or OpenCaptcha to control who signs up, although charging money is the best way to keep them out.
Second, don't manipulate the anchor text at the bottom of the user generated stores, just use your brand name.
Third, I wouldn't be hugely concerned about it being a subdomain. Think about all the spam on blogspot and wordpress.com. You won't enjoy the authority status at the beginning that lends them some buffer against the spam, but if you control it at the beginning you should build up your site enough that you can weather some crap making it's way through.

How to sunset language subdomains that we don't want to support anymore?
We have a primary domain www.postermywall.com. We have used subdomains for offering the same site in different languages, like es.postermywall.com, fr.postermywall.com etc. There are certain language subdomains that have low traffic and are expensive to get translated. We have decided to sunset 3 subdomains that match that criteria. What is the best way of going about removing those subdomains? Should we just redirect from those subdomains to www.postermywall.com? Would that have any negative impact on our primary domain in Google's eye etc.? Anything other than a redirect that we should be considering?

Impact of Non SEO Subdomains
My company has several subdomains whose specific purpose is to act as a landing page/site for our paid search and/or email program. One of the things I've noticed on these subdomains is that they are not being excluded from the SEObots. Could the lack of proper SEO techniques on these subdomains impact our main www subdomain? What is the proper configuration we should use to make sure these sites are not considered for SEO?

To Subdomain or Not Subdomain?
I have a client that has a construction company that services a regional area. They now developed a PRODUCT that they want to promote that would have a national reach. We are redesigning the site, with new branding and all. How do I treat the website URL structure? Is the product it's own domain because of the target market? Or should I make a subdomain because we want to tie the companies together in some fashion. Every article I read confuses me more on how to handle this. Thoughts?

Advice on Duplicate Page Content
We have many pages on our website and they all have the same template (we use a CMS) and at the code level, they are 90% the same. But the page content, title, meta description, and image used are different for all of them. For example - http://www.jumpstart.com/common/find-easter-eggs

Affects of multiple subdomains on homebrew CDN for images
We're creating our own CDN such that instead of serving images from http://mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg It will appear at all of the following subdomains: http://cdn1.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn2.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn3.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn4.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg Image tags on our pages will randomly choose any subdomain for the src. The thought was this will make page loading faster by paralellizing requests across many cookie-less domains. How does this affect : -Ranking of images on Google image search. -Ranking of pages they appear on -Domain authority (images are linked to heavily in our social media efforts, so we will 301 redirect image urls to cdn1.mydomain.com) Should we disallow all but one CDN domain in robots.txt? Will robots.txt on an image only subdomain even be retrieved? Should we just use 1 CDN subdomain instead?

Link Building Advice
Hi Everyone, I have just joined the community and am looking for some help regards Offsite SEO and Link Building. I have done some basic SEO on my website 'Marketing Quotes' Added to web directories (although I am told they do not carry much weight) I have written content and articles around them (on ezine, squidoo etc.) I have written unique content for the site I have done guest posting on blogs Not sure what to do next though for high power links. I did notice a Q&A on contacting webmasters and asking for links (after building a relationship) but wondered if there was anything (offsite wise) that I have missed out? Appreciate any advice. Regards, David
