Google Translate for Unique Content
-
We are considering using the Google Translation tool to translate customer reviews into various languages for publication as indexable content both for users and for search engine long tail visibility and rankings.
Does anyone have any experience, insights or caveats to share?
-
Yep, I think that is pretty much on the money.
Also, if you want reviews, you could always put them in sub folders and geotarget the sub folders as well so.
Then, if you add these folders in webmaster tools and geo target them you should keep everything nice and clean and avoid the wrath of whatever white and black animal Google unleash upon the web next!
Hope this helps.

Thanks Marcus, hadn't see that.
Sounds like what MC is saying is that translated text is not suitable as unique content but if the translated content is quality checked and edited then it could in principle be used.

This is worth a read:

It is not review specific but I think the point stands - don't use Google Translate for website content and if you want to do this, get them rewritten by a translator.
Point being, if your reviews are auto translated, it will not be perfect language so.... is not great content and in some respects, having barely coherant reviews could be a negative equity and is certainly not going to add that credibility you were looking for.
So, no real problem with translating them, but don't use Google Translate for it.
Hope this helps

Directory with Duplicate content? what to do?
Moz keeps finding loads of pages with duplicate content on my website. The problem is its a directory page to different locations. E.g if we were a clothes shop we would be listing our locations: www.sitename.com/locations/london www.sitename.com/locations/rome www.sitename.com/locations/germany The content on these pages is all the same, except for an embedded google map that shows the location of the place. The problem is that google thinks all these pages are duplicated content. Should i set a canonical link on every single page saying that www.sitename.com/locations/london is the main page? I don't know if i can use canonical links because the page content isn't identical because of the embedded map. Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Multilingual SEO - site using Google translate within existing URL structure
Hi everyone - I've just been looking at a site that simply uses Google Translate through its website. So basically, on any page you can Google Translate the content to any language you like - there's no change to the URL structure according to language, etc. I haven't come across this approach before (simply allowing users to Google Translate withing the existing page) - and it doesn't sit well with me - let me have your thoughts re: the SEO implications. Thanks in advance, Luke

How should I exclude content?
I have category pages on an e-commerce site that are showing up as duplicate pages. On top of each page are register and login, and when selected they come up as category/login and category/register. I have 3 options to attempt to fix this and was wondering what you think is the best. 1. Use robots.txt to exclude. There are hundreds of categories so it could become large. 2. Use canonical tags. 3. Force Login and Register to go to their own page.

Duplicate content
Is there manual intervention required for a site that has been flagged for duplicate content to get back to its original rankings, once the duplicated content has been removed? Background: Our site recently experienced a significant drop in traffic around the time that a chunk of content from other sites (ie. duplicate) went live. While it was not an exact replica of the pages on other sites, there was quite a bit of overlap. That content has since been removed, but our traffic hasn't improved. What else can we do to improve our ranking?
