Ever Wise to Intentionally Use Javascript for Global Navigation?
-
I may be going against the grain here, but I'm going to throw this out there and I'm interested in hearing your feedback...
We are a fairly large online retailer (50k+ SKUs) where all of our category and subcategory pages show well over 100 links (just the refinement links on the left can quickly add up to 50+). What's worse is when you hover on our global navigation, you see the hover menu (bot sees them as

) of over 80 links.
Now I realize the good rule of thumb is not to exceed 100 links on a page (and if you did your math, you can see we already exceeded that well before we let the bots get to the good stuff we really wanted them to crawl in the first place).
So...
Is it wise to intentionally shield these global nav links from the bots by using javascript?

I had this same conversation with someone yesterday about a very similar set-up.
In a 2009 blog post, Matt Cutts said that the main reason not to include over 100 links was for user experience. It used to be for technical reasons, but those no longer apply. Here is the post: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-many-links-per-page/
Lots of links can lead to lots of code, which slows things down. It will also be dividing up the page rank fairly heavily. However in the age of mega-menus I don't think that the number of links is, in itself, a problem.
Just for reference (and the answers to your situation may be different) our conversation about this ended with the decision to reduce the number slightly - structuring to leak less page rank to unimportant pages. However overall we still have a LOT of links and are happy with that.

Does Implemented SEO Changes Using Google Tag Manager are not supported any more?
Hello all! On May i read the article https://mza.seotoolninja.com/blog/seo-changes-using-google-tag-manager and I implemented it in order to de-index some pages. I was really happy cause it worked but now the same problem appeared. Does anybody know if Google stopped taking into consideration SEO changes through Tag Manager? Hin6E Hin6E

Shall I use a 301 or 302 redirect when people leave the company?
Hello, At my company, we have instances where client-facing people leave the company and so we need to remove their profile page from the website. As opposed to people receiving a 404 when they search for them, I thought it would be best to divert visitors to a generic landing page to explain that the person they are looking for has left the company with details on how to get in touch. I'm tempted to use a 302 redirect so the person they are searching for stays in the search results longer. But longer-term, will this cause any harm? Should it be eventually be turned into a 301 redirect? Or should I just use a 301 in the first instance. Thanks in advance, Stu

We're currently not using schemas on our website. How important is it? And are websites across the globe using it?
Schemas looks like an important thing when it comes to structuring your website and ensuring the crawl bots get all the details. I've been reading a lot of articles around the web and most of them are saying that schemas are important but very few websites are using it. Why so? Are the schemas on schema.org there to stay or am I wasting my time?

Use "If-Modified-Since HTTP header"
I´m working on a online brazilian marketplace ( looks like etsy in US) and we have a huge amount of pages... I´ve been studing a lot about that and I was wondering to use If-Modified-Since so Googlebot could check if the pages have been updated, and if it is not, there is no reason to get a new copy of them since it already has a current copy in the index. It uses a 304 status code, "and If a search engine crawler sees a web page status code of 304 it knows that web page has not been updated and does not need to be accessed again." Someone quoted before me**Since Google spiders billions of pages, there is no real need to use their resources or mine to look at a webpage that has not changed. For very large websites, the crawling process of search engine spiders can consume lots of bandwidth and result in extra cost and Googlebot could spend more time in pages actually changed or new stuff!**However, I´ve checked Amazon, Rakuten, Etsy and few others competitors and no one use it! I´d love to know what you folks think about it 🙂

MedicalEntity Schemas: Examples of Sites Using It?
Anyone know of any medical or health-related sites that have widely implemented medical schema types? For example: MedicalCode, MedicalTest, MedicalSignorSymptom, etc. and others listed here: http://schema.org/MedicalEntity I've reviewed the examples on schema.org, but it would he helpful to see some live examples in the wild. Thanks!

Worthwhile to have global footer links?
About Us, FAQ, Site Map, Terms & Privacy - I know rarely viewed by users (at least on my website), so why keep in global footer across all pages, since one could argue it will dilute some link juice to more important pages? Why not just keep on homepage only? What is argument for having links to these pages across all pages on a site? Is there any SEO value?

Do total number of links in main navigation play a role in ranking?
On one site I work on, I noticed that pages in the upper navigation that have less links in the main navigation vs pages that have more links tend to perform better in organic search. Has anyone else noticed this?

Using comment boxes for building links (the right way)
Some people see this kind of link building as spammy mainly because of automated systems I guess making it spammy. But what if you use your company name linking to your site to indicate who has posted it and then actually contribute some good discussion. A lot of these are no-follow (although I have got it into my head even though they are no follow not passing juice I still think Google counts the link and it does something). So I want to start doing some of this, for example squidoo. Lots of lens with great content that I could quite easily comment on with 50 words+
