Are there SEO implications to blocking foreign IP addresses?
-
We are dealing with a foreign company that has completely ripped off our entire site template, design and branding. This is such an inconvenience and we've had similar things happen enough in the past that we're considering blocking large ranges of IP addresses from accessing our site, via htaccess.
Is this something that will potentially cause problems with search engine bots crawling or indexing our site? We are in the US and our site is hosted in the US, but I'm not sure if the major search engines could potentially be using foreign based bots.
Looking for any insight on this or if there are any other potential SEO problems to consider.
Thanks

Zee, did you implement this? Outcomes?
-
If the bot is in another country and you have blocked the range it's pretty obvious... What kind of "backup" are you looking for?
If you are asking me if I have a geographical list of bots for each search engine then no, I don't. But this might be of some use to you http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/webmasters/TbpNyFiJvjs
Good luck with the whole site design / copyright issue, any chance you could PM me a link I would like to see what they have done... (just curious).

Thanks for the reply SEOKeith, but focusing "on making our site more authoritative" does not solve the problem.
The problem we have is not an SEO problem, it's a design, copyright, trademark and ethical problem. When you spend months developing and designing a site only to have it ripped off, it's not something we want to just ignore.
The damage has been done in this particular instance. However, we've had enough problems in the past from foreign visitors and our business doesn't come from foreign countries. Because of that, blocking actual humans from accessing our site from countries we've had problems with is a potential solution.
The solution we're considering could potentially impact the way search engines view our site and that's the question. Do you have anything to back up your comment about "blocking large ranges of IP addresses you could end up restricting access to legitimate...bots"?

By blocking large ranges of IP address you could end up restricting access to legitimate users, bots etc.
For a start how do you even know what site is harvesting your data is in the said country, sure they might be hosting there but the boxes that are ripping your content might be in the US they could then have some web heads in some other random countries serving up the content.
People copying / stealing / cloning your content is pretty common it happens to a lot of my sites - it's just the way it is your not going to be able to stop it you might as well just focus on making your site more authoritative.

Is Removing Breadcrumbs Detrimental for SEO?
We have full navigational breadcrumbs on our site for the menu and the brand menu. i.e. Home > Clothing > Jackets Brand > Brand Name > Brand Jackets There's been talk of removing this and having it like Chico's does, where on item pages they just have a link at the top to previous category (i.e. you're on a shirt product page and at the top it says "Back to Tops" instead of listing Home > Clothing > Tops) Is doing something like this detrimental to SEO? From what I've read Breadcrumbs are for user experience but I just want to be sure.

What are the SEO implications of URLs that use a # in them?
I have several clients who have begun to ask questions about sites that are designed to look like a single page. When you click on a link, the URL changes but it uses a # before (i.e. http://www.kelloggs.com/teamusa**/#**/teamusa/athletes/kerri-walsh.html. What are the SEO implications of having a page set up this way? I noticed that Google has indexed this page but the indexed URL does not include a #. Is Google indexing a separate version of this page? Any insights would be really helpful! Thanks

How To SEO Mobile Pages?
hello, I have finally put my first foot on the path of trying to learn and understand mobile SEO. I have a few questions regarding mobile SEO and how it works, so please help me out. I use wordpress for my site, and there is a nifty plugin called WP touch http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/ What it basically does is, it converts your desktop version into a mobile friendly version. I wanted to know that if it does that, does this mean whatever SEO i do for my regular web site gets accomplished for my moible version as well? Another simple question is, if i search for the same term on my mobile phone then on my desktop how different will the SERs be? thanks moz peeps

How does a mega drop-down affects SEO?
We are looking at implementing a "mega drop-down" as our main menu on our website. Will that be good or bad for SEO? My company is a big tour operator so our website contains a lot of pages describing all our destinations, hotels etc. We have noticed that our visitors have some trouble to navigate to all this pages since it requires a lot of clicks to reach a specific page. In order to make this easier we have looked at this popular mega drop-down thing that we all love. But what about Google? Will Google love or hate us for doing this? An example showing what I mean by mega drop-down: http://www.phonehouse.se/
