What's a really good example of a linkbait-y Category / Subcategory hierarchy?
-
Rand makes a really great point in this 2009 post about the shape of crawl paths:
"#4. Craft navigation / category pages that are worthy of links. If you can make these pages worthy of links and attention, you drive PageRank and crawl priority further down your site's architecture into the content (and signal the engine that ALL your pages are important."
Which makes sense, intuitively, because you'd like link juice to flow directly and undiluted to your money pages. "Here's all my Green Widgets, Roger: they're all right here. While you're at it, here's a related blog post—'5 Ridiculously Awesome Things Every Green Widget Buyer Should Know'—and, oh look! Would you like to see my Blue Widgets as well?"
In practice, though, the Home » Widgets » Green Widgets doesn't sound all that alluring. Useful, absolutely, for UX, but not for getting links. Anyone have some favorite examples of Category / Subcategory hierarchies that do well as link-bait?
Client is a marketing agency dealing in the technical arcana of databases and ad serving, so their money pages won't be as specific as a Green Widget or a Miami Hotel. Their site isn't huge, and the pages will be extensively interlinked, so the emphasis has more to do with link juice / page authority than indexation. But I'm wondering if it could it be smart to replace a generic "Services" category with a KW-rich drop-down menu of "Marketing Solutions" (i.e. 'Increase Customer Retention') and link each landing page to a relevant charcuterie of services, white papers, webinars, case studies, etc., rather than keeping these pages in their respective silos—even as they link horizontally to related services?

Link Building-Focused Examples:
Stephanie Chang has a good SEOMoz article on Creative link building for ecommerce sites that discusses good pages.
Design Examples:
Another article on Smashing Magazine details some beautiful/creative ecommerce designs. While the post is slightly more focused on the design, there are some good examples on there of unique content, too. Both are important in earning links on otherwise boring pages, and will greatly increase user trust and conversions if done well. Here are some other similar articles from Smashing Magazine: Design Showcase Of Creative Online-Shops, 35 Beautiful E-Commerce Websites.
**Seat Geek: **
This is an OK example that comes to mind of content - but they could do better. If you look at a page like http://seatgeek.com/paul-mccartney-tickets/#about, you'll see on the left sidebar that there are tabs for "About Paul McCartney Tickets" which contains some statistics about concert ticket prices, among other things. They could do a better job by improving the design of the page and making it more visually appealing, and by featuring this content above the tickets themselves, rather than hiding it on the about tab like they're currently doing.
Service Sites:
For a Service site... nothing changes. Instead of assisting a user in the decision process between products, you're doing it for services. Make the design look sharp, keep all of those pages 1 click from the homepage unless there's tons of them, and make the pages useful to the user.
Regarding the "Marketing Solutions" concept, I'd say give users two options: browse by service itself, or browse by solution. This satisfies them whether they know what they're looking for or not, and it adds context to the existing service pages.

New to SEO - Best Practice Example
I am new to the SEO world and I have been using the tools SEOMoz provides. I was doing some research and happen to find this website: http://www.futuresimple.com/lead-tracking-software/ I noticed that their sitemap does not contain all of the links that are located at the bottom of the page. Also when you click one of the page on the bottom that you are taken to a landing page and it forces you to their software page. Community feedback - do you think this is a good techique to do something like this or can you please provide me a some other good examples for a niche/smaller website? Thank you. Denny

Should we use 'disavow' if we dramatically dropped serps after Oct 5th, but did not receive a warning?
We dramatically dropped serps after Oct 5th, but did not receive a warning about bad links on google webmasters. Is it a good idea to find and collect the worst links and disavow them? As there was no warning we can only guess links were the problem, but it seems likely. However we do not want to send any requests to google if no warning was sent. Can disavow be used in this way, or should we do more manually? (We are hoping remove links + increase very solid links + optimize for key words will help revive serps) Many thanks. James

Links aren't showing up in SEOMOZ resports
Hi, I've been building links to my client's website for the past 3 weeks. I know that there are several sites that link to my client's website now but SEOMOZ's link analyses says there aren't any sites linking to my client's website. Anybody know what's up with that? Sincerely, Rex

Why aren't my links being indexed
I am building backlinks from similar sources to 2 different domains. Domain A seems to get its linked indexed within a day or 2, while Domain B has virtually identical links that haven't indexed for over a month. Domain A is older and has more authority, and Domain B is hosted on a different server. Any insight into why this is happening? It's very frustrating.

Anything to bear in mind when setting up a related 'family' of sites with linking between them?
We've spun out content from a single finance related news/analysis site (running for about 2 years) into several topic-specific sites on individual topics (markets, investment etc etc). They're all on the same server, use the same CMS (using a multisite setup), and share largely the same codebase, though obviously with customisations for the site names, and we've made sure each has a distinct identity. At the bottom of each page, we're linking to 'latest posts on the network', aggregating the 5 most recent posts from all the sites and displaying them in the footer. We've obviously made sure the actual content is completely unique on each site though. Just wondering if anyone has any tips about ensuring we don't dilute our SEO too much. and how to maximise our effectiveness?

Charity / Donation - Website and SEO
I have a prospective client looking to do SEO- they are a charity and have a fixed one time budget. (The budget is surprisingly high) They are looking to have their site ranked for "charities in (our city)" and "dental charities" and any keyword variations. Adwords shows significant search volume and ranking difficulty is moderate per SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool. On page will be fairly simple and well handled, but am looking more towards the authority and link building. I am going to tackle 3 top quality directories, Yahoo, BOTW, and Business.com (as well as DMOZ but i've never had luck). But was wondering if there were any other nationally recognized sources that mozzers know about that would be a good place to start to get some links to the site. The organization is a clinic that provides free dental work to veterans. I have never handled SEO for a charity before, and my first instinct is that getting a link to the site will be much easier to get than if I ask them to give money to the foundation, so they would be glad to do it. Any other guidance would be appreciated. And I can give more details if necessary. Any other tips and insight would be appreciated. Thank you! Ian
