How to measure impact of blogging on the bottom line?
-
I know that blogging is good, because everybody says it is. I know that I can sort out the top landing pages in Google Analytics and see how many of the entrances come through blog posts.
How do I measure the impact blogging has on the bottom line? Would I sort out the entrances to blog entrances and then see how many of those visitors ultimately converted either through a micro or macro conversion?
Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. How do I convince upper management of the impact of blogging?

Hey EGOL,
Thanks for the thoughtful responses. I agree that it's not worth doing the blog if you're just doing it to be like everyone else or just to feel like you're blogging.
I did pull statistics showing how many entrances came through our blog. And all the other metrics you provided are very good, especially the landing on the homepage and clicking on the blog portion, I think that's indicative of a good blog because people remember it even when they get to your homepage.
I'll try these out. Thanks!

I know that blogging is good, because everybody says it is.
heh... I think that blogging is the silver bullet that lots of people are wasting their time on.. they are just going through the motions thinking that they have the secret weapon - but it isn't unless your blog is producing.
Ideas for measuring success... all of these might not apply to you and you might think of others...
--- search traffic that is pulled in directly to the blog (you would not have gotten these visitors otherwise)
--- growing feedburner subscriber count
--- number of visitors that land on site homepage and then click to the blog
--- adsense income from blog pages
--- number of likes, links, etc generated by the blog
--- volume of site search that clicks through to blog content
--- number of sales from people who enter through the blog
--- comment activity in the blog
--- direct traffic into the blog

Google Analytics - Events impacting session data
Hi Mozzers, Has anybody ever experienced event tracking significantly impacting session data? Here's a summary of what I'm finding: When I measure sessions to a particular hostname (a subdomain) in my Google Analytics report, sessions dropped by over 100% when I removed some event tracking on that subdomain (an event was triggered when a user clicked on a particular button). When I reinstate that event tracking, sessions go back up to around where they used to be. Can anybody understand why this might be happening? Thanks!

Blog Analytics broke for two weeks. How do I account for these hits in my monthly report?
The Analytics on my blog broke for about two weeks before I realized it. I need to come up with some estimated numbers for total pageviews, referrals, direct hits, etc to add to my monthly SEM report. I took the average of the past four 2 week periods to come up with the number of hits. Should I just add this number to the total hits on my site? Or are these hits being counted twice if they went on to the main site? http://www.howlatthemoon.com

How would you measure the SEO success of new site launch?
It has been 12 months, and it is time for some serious SEO reality check up. I think we have done some really nice things (social integration, on page optimization etc) but we honestly could do a million time better on some other elements (anchor, text, link building etc...). Would love to hear from the community what would be the top 10 criteria you would use to judge the quality of the SEO work done for a new site during is first 12 months. PS: we are a very content rich over 1,500 new articles/post in our niche with 12 months - our site is migraine.com Thanks

What impact will Google's 10/18/2011 announcement of 'Making Search More Secure' have on the ability to track specific keyword queries via Analytics?
The full announcement is here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/making-search-more-secure.html My concern is that the ability for Google Analytics to parse information on specific keyword queries will be diminished. The article hints that Google Webmaster Tools will be exempt from the problem, and I've never relied on Webmaster tools as a go-to for tying specific keyword queries to Goal Tracking (form submissions and sales). The community's thoughts on this one are appreciated. 🙂

Switching Blog to domain/blog... worth it?
So we have a great business. Let's say: Service.com. And years ago we launched a great blog. Let's call it ServiceDiscussion.com. So, both are PR5 sites. The BUSINESS gets about 50k page views a month. But the BLOG is getting about 100k page views a month. So, my question is... is it time to fold the blog into the business domain? Let's say we did a 301 redirect and turned it into Service.com/blog. We'd be folding all this extra traffic into the business domain. Would the google juice be worth doing this?
