Subdirectories for subject relations
-
Dear fellow mozzers,
Im in doubt about a subject concerning the use of subdirectories to organize pages and content, but also the effect on how googlebot relates pages together through subdirectories.
The specifics:
Momentarily the website im working on a site which has a flat url structure for all pages. The website sells courses and eduction on beauty specific subjects. Imagine that there are multiple head categories like: pedicure. This head category has multiple subcourses which all have this structure (as do all pages within the site): http://www.domain.com/subject.
Now im wondering if it would be better to bring structure through adding subdirectories like http://www.domain.com/pedicure/pedicure-sub. I've read arguments on keeping your url short because this performs better. Nut on the other hand i think that google can use these subdirectories to determine the relation between head and sub.
The reason im asking this, is because the head category page is ranking better for keywords beloning to the subcourses. Would implementing subdirectories help to make the subpages rank better for their specific keywords?
Thx

What to do with high-traffic pages that are not related to e-commerce?
Hello folks! We run a webshop selling wine and spirits, which obviously serves the purpose to generate revenue. To add further value to our customers, we have a section on the site, suggesting food recipes. The main purpose of that section is to inspire and educate about how wine and foods can be combined. Rankings are getting higher on "important" keywords for our business, in terms of products and product categories. However, the recipe pages, which are less important, are getting much more organic traffic. So here comes my question: Having "less important" pages that do not convert in terms of purchases, but however do get loads of organic traffic, what could I do with these pages, in terms of SEO? Could they be used to pass link juice to other, more "important" pages, that we actually want to rank on? Thanks!

Example of a local "boring-niche" site in a relatively high competition area using strictly white hat tactics
I'm looking for an example of a site in a very boring service niche locally "let's say elevator doors in chicago" or something like that, that successfully using blogging, content generation, etc to achieve top rankings above its spammy competitors. Anyone care to give out a case study? I'm not talking about companies that submit to 100's of local directories like yelp, or google maps rankings. I'm talking about organic or blended serps.

Anything to bear in mind when setting up a related 'family' of sites with linking between them?
We've spun out content from a single finance related news/analysis site (running for about 2 years) into several topic-specific sites on individual topics (markets, investment etc etc). They're all on the same server, use the same CMS (using a multisite setup), and share largely the same codebase, though obviously with customisations for the site names, and we've made sure each has a distinct identity. At the bottom of each page, we're linking to 'latest posts on the network', aggregating the 5 most recent posts from all the sites and displaying them in the footer. We've obviously made sure the actual content is completely unique on each site though. Just wondering if anyone has any tips about ensuring we don't dilute our SEO too much. and how to maximise our effectiveness?

High PR vs Low PR and Relative
My main question is if you had a choice between a PR 7 site and a PR 4-5 site that was relative and related to your website content, which would be a better choice? Does relativeness matter anymore?

Follow or Nofollow outbound links to resourceful, related site?
As I am going through and redeveloping a website, I am trying to add some external links to resourceful information regarding this page. Should I put a nofollow or follow attribute on these? I am only putting 1-5 links per page to associations and other organizations that would be beneficial to the visitor. I am worried about the number of outbound links causing me to get penalized. Ideas?
