This site got hit but why..?
-
I am currently looking at taking on a small project website which was recently hit but we are really at a loss as to why so I wanted to open this up to the floor and see if anyone else had some thoughts or theories to add.
The site is
and the site appeared to be hit by Penguin because sure enough it drops from several hundred visitors a day to less than 50.
Nothing was changed about the website, and looking at the Analytics it bumbled along at a less than 50 visitors a day. On June 25th when Panda 3.8 hit, the site saw traffic increase to between 80-100 visitors a day and steadily increases almost to pre-penguin levels.
On August 9th/10th, traffic drops off the face of the planet once again.
This site has some amazing links
http://techcrunch.com/2012/02/04/algorithmsdata-vs-analystsreports-fight/
http://as.exeter.ac.uk/library/using/help/business/researchingfinance/stockmarket/That were earned entirely naturally/editorially. I know these aren't "get out of jail free cards" but the rest of the profile isn't that bad either. Normally you can look at a link profile and say "Yep, this link and that link are a bit questionable" but beyond some slightly off-topic guest blogging done a while back before I was looking to get involved in the project there really isn't anything all that fruity about the links in my opinion.
I know that the site design needs some work but the content is of a high standard and it covers its topic (commodities) in a very comprehensive and authoritative way. In my opinion, (I'm not biased yet because it isn't my site) this site genuinely deserves to rank.
As far as I know, this site has received no unnatural link warnings.
I am hoping this is just a case of us having looked at this for too long and it will be a couple of obvious/glaring fixes to someone with a fresh pair of eyes.
Does anyone have any insights into what the solution might be?
[UPDATE] after responses from a few folks I decided to update the thread with progress I made on investigating the situation. After plugging the domain into Open Site Explorer I can see quite a few links that didn't show up in Link Research Tools (which is odd as I thought LRT was powered by mozscape but anyway... shows the need for multiple tools). It does seem like someone in the past has been a little trigger happy with building links to some of the inner pages.
-
Thanks Billy - another individual touched on this above actually but I think it is a very valid point. It is something I am adding in to my list of recommendations as well.
-
Just a quick look at the home page a some quick navigation of the site showed me that on the home page alone there are at least five links that go to howtotradecommoditiesDOTcom/go/etoro which just redirects to the etoro website. It almost looks like there are ads that are disguised as internal links in order to keep from getting the 'above the fold' penalty. Who knows how Google sees this but I would think that they wouldn't see it in a very good light whether this was the intention or not. I would certainly look at reworking your internal linking structure as well.
Good luck

also the onsite pages have bad anchor text links
-
Hi David,
For some reason these weren't showing up in Link Research Tools - just run the site through OSE and now I can see a fair amount of junk to inner pages...
Thanks for your input here
James

The home page and inner pages has tons of internal anchor text links that look pretty spammy could be that is hurting you. Tons of exact anchor texts all with word commoditie in it very unnatural.
-
Hi James, I'll didn't see any punch in the face this is the issue..
But, the site IMO is clearly a site that is looking for ad clicks. Had I come across it in my day to day life, I would immediately leave. I say this because it is clearly trying to force you to click the toro ad which is displayed 2-3 times on every page.. Furthermore, actually reading the text of the site is off-putting as you can't help but be distracted by the flashing or moving images, and I feel like I'm reading a spam site due to the over-abundance of underlining. So in this case I would say my user experience is 2 on scale of 10.
On the SEO side I think you have a challenge. This site is clearly about commodities, but how search engines can ascertain the difference between each page seems difficult, commodities and the derivatives are on every single page I looked at.
Andy also touched on a good point and it was what I thought immediately when I saw the site, which was.. is this text from another site? When you look at the user experience, and the amount of text on the site, it is hard to believe somebody sat down and specifically typed and wrote every page for this site. If somebody did, I think the web designer needs to give them more credit and not treat their time like a plate of spaghetti thrown at a wall.
I am not trying to be harsh, rather constructive. I believe a sites that offer poor user experiences should be out of SERP's when there is better competition, I also believe "copy & paste" sites should be thrown to the back of the line. I can say IMO the user experience of this site was very low, and the information provided is suspect, so it would be hard for me to argue with Google or any search engine ranking a site like this low.

There is probably a days-worth of discussion here James. But just looking at your links very quickly, I do see quite a few questionable ones, some odd ones, but I do notice that most have the same anchor text and appear to go to the home page.
Could be nothing at all, but something to look at. However, unless you have a links warning from Google in WMT, then it is unlikely this is the cause.
You do also seem to have a little bit of duplicate content outside of your site so presumably this is your content and someone has plagiarised it? For example, here is a random search from one page.
I honestly think there is a lot more to look at here, but something of a starter for you.
Andy

Ajax tabs on site
Hello, On a webpage I have multiple tabs, each with their own specific content. Now these AJAX/JS tabs, if Google only finds the first tab when the page loads the content would be too thin. What do you suggest as an implementation? With Google being able to crawl and render more JS nowadays, but they deprecated AJAX crawling a while back. I was maybe thinking of doing a following implementation where when JS is disabled, the tabs collapse under each other with the content showing. With JS enabled then they render as tabs. This is usually quite a common implementation for tabbed content plugins on Wordpress as well. Also, Google had commented about that hidden/expandable content would count much less, even with the above JS fix. Look forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks, Conrad

Google cache is showing my UK homepage site instead of the US homepage and ranking the UK site in US
Hi There, When I check the cache of the US website (www.us.allsaints.com) Google returns the UK website. This is also reflected in the US Google Search Results when the UK site ranks for our brand name instead of the US site. The homepage has hreflang tags only on the homepage and the domains have been pointed correctly to the right territories via Google Webmaster Console. This has happened before in 26th July 2015 and was wondering if any had any idea why this is happening or if any one has experienced the same issueFDGjldR

Keyword phrase for entire site
Hey everyone! I'm fairly new to SEO but I have a large number of sites I'm needing to SEO. I'm a tad confused as to how many keyword phrases I should use throughout my site. For example, my site is www.uluru.travel. I want to rank highlight for the phrase 'uluru tours' throughout the site, as many of my pages list uluru tours and people searching for this phrase are my type of customers. As you can see I've tried to do some basic on page SEO for that phrase by including it in page title, headings etc. But the entire site doesn't seem to rank very well. Would you guys suggest trying to target 'uluru tours' phrase throughout the entire site of just focus a couple of pages on this term? Any advice is greatly appreciated guys! Cheers

One Site vs. Many
This is a question that I am not sure has a "right" answer. I am just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this. I can see benefit of both sides of the coin. In your opinion, is it better to have one large e-commerce site with all of your content on the same domain or is it better to have multiple more targeted domains with your content broken up into smaller chunks? The reason I ask is, I feel like while multiple more targeted sites certainly have the benefit of focus, aren't you taking all your traffic and content, splitting it up and leaving you with several sites that most likely are getting less traffic than one large site would. All opinions welcome.

Micro Site Penalty?
I have been carrying out On-Page optimisation only for a client www.shade7.co.nz. After three months or so I have been getting some great results, improving to the top three positions for at least 30 of 45 keywords targeted. Couple of more tweaks and I would be a very happy camper. Disaster overnight! Rankings CRASH! Unbeknown to me the client a month or so back decided to link just about every product/link on a micro site he owns (www.shademakers.com/ ) plus one other site he owns. Explorer I think discovered over 350 back-links (follow) from these sites! As this is a site he owns and it is targeting the same keywords I presume this falls into the EVIL bucket of SEO. Two part question do you believe I am correct that this is the reason for this rankings crash and what would be the best way to resolve this! server-side 301 redirect for the micro site? Delete the micro site (drastic measure) Remove all the links other than maybe one in the contact page saying visit our other site shade7 other options? The client or I have not received any bad link Emails from Google.

Site revamp for neglected site - modifying site structure, URLs and content - is there an optimal approach?
A site I'm involved with, www.organicguide.com, was at one stage (long ago) performing reasonably well in the search engines. It was ranking highly for several keywords. The site has been neglected for some considerable period of time. A new group of people are interested in revamping the site, updating content, removing some of the existing content, and generally refreshing the site entirely. In order to go forward with the site, significant changes need to be made. This will likely involve moving the entire site across to wordpress. The directory software (edirectory.com) currently being used has not been designed with SEO in mind and as a result numerous similar pages of directory listings (all with similar titles and descriptions) are in google's results, albeit with very weak PA. After reading many of the articles/blog posts here I realize that a significant revamp and some serious SEO work is needed. So, I've joined this community to learn from those more experienced. Apart from doing 301 redirects for pages that we need to retain, is there any optimal way of removing/repairing the current URL structure as the site gets updated? Also, is it better to make changes all at once or is an iterative approach preferred? Many thanks in advance for any responses/advice offered. Cheers MacRobbo

Noindex a meta refresh site
I have a client's site that is a vanity URL, i.e. www.example.com, that is setup as a meta refresh to the client's flagship site: www22.example.com, however we have been seeing Google include the Vanity URL in the index, in some cases ahead of the flagship site. What we'd like to do is to de-index that vanity URL. We have included a no-index meta tag to the vanity URL, however we noticed within 24 hours, actually less, the flagship site also went away as well. When we removed the noindex, both vanity and flagship sites came back. We noticed in Google Webmaster that the flagship site's robots.txt file was corrupt and was also in need of fixing, and we are in process of fixing that - Question: Is there a way to noindex vanity URL and NOT flagship site? Was it due to meta refresh redirect that the noindex moved out the flagship as well? Was it maybe due to my conducting a google fetch and then submitting the flagship home page that the site reappeared? The robots.txt is still not corrected, so we don't believe that's tied in here. To add to the additional complexity, the client is UNABLE to employ a 301 redirect, which was what I recommended initially. Anyone have any thoughts at all, MUCH appreciated!

Multiple sites in the same niche
Hi All A question regarding multiple sites in the same niche... If I have say 10 sites all targetting the same niche yet all on different C-class IPs with different hosts, registrars, whois data and ages can I use the same template, or will Google discern a pattern? Basically I have developed a WordPress template which I want to use on the sites albeit with different logos / brand colours. NB/ All of the 10 sites will have unique, original content and they will NOT be interlinked
