Taking descriptions from Manufacturer sites and Duplicate content

We are doing some inventory improvements eg new photographs from various angles, etc. We are also writing descriptions for each product.. As one of our suppliers has perfect desriptions on their site what is the theory on how duplicate content will affect our ranking for these products if we copy and paste? Also if we change the descriptions, just how different do they need to be? Thanks

Yes it is Sean. However, I thought I saw that SEOMoz included it in a blog post somewhere. Perhaps if you email them they can tell you where? Its all coming back to me. My SEO brain is a bit rusty unlike my alter ego who sometimes posts here..
We are lucky on this occasion as the manufacturer site has great B2C descriptions which sell the product well. Also, none of our main competitors are taking the descriptions indeed nor have they taken time to write their own.

This is a pretty common scenario for e-commerce. I am in-house SEO for a large e-commerce site specializing in profession audio video equipment. It's highly competitive and also highly technical. You often see resellers copying and pasting manufacturer descriptions. While it's not optimal, and unique, robust description are obviously better, there are times when just getting a mass number of products up on the website quickly makes it necessary to copy and paste some descriptions. While Google most likely isn't going to penalize you (unless you copy verbatim a manufacturer's page, HTML and all), your content probably will never rank as high as it might with really great, well-written descriptions that speak to your specific audience.
As far as your question concerning re-writing the descriptions, if you simply change some words around or slip in some synonyms instead of doing a complete re-write, I'd consider not doing that. The reason being that you are going to end up with content that is still substantially similar to the original. According to Google's Matt Cutts, content that is "substantially similar" is the same as duplicate content. IMHO, most manufacturer descriptions are pretty horrible anyway. They aren't written for your customers, they are written for their customers (which in this case is you). Generally those descriptions tend to be highly technical in nature and not compelling from a marketing viewpoint. You'd be far better off writing one by one unique descriptions that really speak to your customer personas. I know on a big site how huge a task that can be. But, even on a large site it can be tackled over several months with some concentrated dedication. All that being said, I can totally relate to the daunting task it is to churn out high-quality and unique product descriptions. It's something we struggle to do every day! Hope this is helpful

Duplicate content question...
I have a high duplicate content issue on my website. However, I'm not sure how to handle or fix this issue. I have 2 different URLs landing to the same page content. http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/vegan/ and http://www.myfitstation.com/tag/raw-food/ .In this situation, I cannot redirect one URL to the other since in the future I will probably be adding additional posts to either the "vegan" tag or the "raw food tag". What is the solution in this case? Thank you

Why are these two URLs showing in Moz as duplicate content?

Duplicate Page Content

Development Website Duplicate Content Issue
Hi, We launched a client's website around 7th January 2013 (http://rollerbannerscheap.co.uk), we originally constructed the website on a development domain (http://dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk) which was active for around 6-8 months (the dev site was unblocked from search engines for the first 3-4 months, but then blocked again) before we migrated dev --> live. In late Jan 2013 changed the robots.txt file to allow search engines to index the website. A week later I accidentally logged into the DEV website and also changed the robots.txt file to allow the search engines to index it. This obviously caused a duplicate content issue as both sites were identical. I realised what I had done a couple of days later and blocked the dev site from the search engines with the robots.txt file. Most of the pages from the dev site had been de-indexed from Google apart from 3, the home page (dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk, and two blog pages). The live site has 184 pages indexed in Google. So I thought the last 3 dev pages would disappear after a few weeks. I checked back late February and the 3 dev site pages were still indexed in Google. I decided to 301 redirect the dev site to the live site to tell Google to rank the live site and to ignore the dev site content. I also checked the robots.txt file on the dev site and this was blocking search engines too. But still the dev site is being found in Google wherever the live site should be found. When I do find the dev site in Google it displays this; Roller Banners Cheap » admin dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/ A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more. This is really affecting our clients SEO plan and we can't seem to remove the dev site or rank the live site in Google. In GWT I have tried to remove the sub domain. When I visit remove URLs, I enter dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk but then it displays the URL as http://www.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk. I want to remove a sub domain not a page. Can anyone help please?

Advice on Duplicate Page Content

How damaging is duplicate content in a forum?
Hey all; I hunted around for this in previous questions in the Q&A and didn't see anything. I'm just coming back to SEO after a few years out of the field and am preparing recommendations for our web dev team. We use a custom-coded software for our forums, and it creates a giant swathe of duplicate content, as each post has its own link. For example: domain.com/forum/post_topic domain.com/forum/post_topic/post1 domain.com/forum/post_topic/post2 ...and so on. However, since every page of the forum defaults to showing 20 posts, that means that every single forum thread that's 20 posts long has 21 different pages with identical content. Now, our forum is all user-generated content and is not generally a source of much inbound traffic--with occasional exceptions--but I was curious if having a mess of duplicate content in our forums could damage our ability to rate well in a different directory of the site. I've heard that Panda is really cracking down on duplicate content, and last time I was current on SEO trends, rel="canonical" was the hot new thing that everyone was talking about, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. Any guidance from the community would be much appreciated.

Duplicate Content Question
Just signed up for pro and did my first diagnostic check - I came back with something like 300 duplicate content errors which suprised me because every page is unique. Turns out my pages are listed as www.sportstvjobs.com and just sportstvjobs.com does that really count as duplicate? and if so does anyone know what I should be doing differently? I thought it was just a canonical issue, but best I can tell I have the canonical in there but this still came up as a duplicate error....maybe I did canonical wrong, or its some other issue?
