Unused CSS
-
Is there any advantage to removing unused CSS on a wp theme template. If removed will it not merely be added with the next update?

There is a marginal advantage to smaller CSS files, in terms of page speed. I believe that Google's PageSpeed and Yahoo!'s ySlow both recommend that you're using a 'minify' tool on both your CSS and JavaScript in fact. But again, the improvement is more often than not extremely minimal compared to other performance enhancements like Varnish.

WordPress updates the default theme only when you do an upgrade. So if the CSS file is attached to the default theme, yes. Otherwise, no.

Content that's behind CSS..
For content that's been loaded onto the page.. but it requires a click for it to be revealed.. as in a slider, or a tab, to save space or for a page's organization.. what are your thoughts on Google counting or weighting this content? It would make sense for Google to give it partial or no weighting as if Google attributes the content to being there, its confusion for the user to land on the page and have to find it/click around to find it.. Sorry if this is an obvious question to SEOs.. I've always assumed as long as it was loaded, it'd be mostly counted.. but I'm beginning to doubt my assumption. Thanks!

Is it better to put all your CSS in 1 file or is it no problem to use 10 files or more like on most frameworks?

Does css float affect SEO?
It is generally believed that the closer the content is to the top of the page, the better it is for SEO. If that's incorrect, please let me know. I have a 2 column site where the left menu is navigation and right side is content. Obviously, the left menu appears in the code before the content does, but I can flip them around via css float. If I do that, the content will appear on the left visually, even though in the code it still comes after the left side navigation. Do either positions affect seo?

Combining CSS
One recommendation from a page speed analysis of my site was to combine CSS (external style sheets) but after reading more on the topic others say that this is not always best. Any thoughts on either approach?

Html and css errors - what do SE spiders do if they come across coding errors? Do they stop crawling the rest of the code below the error
I have a client who uses a template to build their websites (no problem with that) when I ran the site through w3c validator it threw up a number of errors, most of which where minor eg missing close tags and I suggested they fix them before I start their off site SEO campaigns. When I spoke to their web designer about the issues I was told that some of the errors where "just how its done" So if that's the case, but the validator still registers the error, do the SE spiders ignore them and move on, or does it penalize the site in some way?
