Do you link out to good content?

I have noticed that there are a bunch of questions in the Q&A about people are concerned about allowing blog post comments or linking out in general.
My question is: do you avoid linking out to other websites, even though they have good content? I am not talking about direct competitors here, but just linking to other websites in general.

Or they could allow one, totally non-spammy sig link once you get to a certain point... i.e. 10,000 moz points or something. I doubt spammers would hang around that long to get a link

Cool - seems like we all agree that linking out is good / the right thing to do.
I am still amazed that many people are still fearing that they will lose all their "page rank juice" if they give a single link to Wikipedia or whatever.

I link to quality content on other sites too. Most of the time it's to authority sites (for e-commerce I might find a good page on a manufacturers site that has a lot of useful information). I will also link to news outlets or blogs that have some relevant content that I simply don't have time to cover or can't do a better job of covering. The only exception to this is that I never really link to direct competition, but I feel like most people here will do the same thing.
I think some outbound links can help you in terms of SEO. It looks natural, and shows that you are offering more than just your own content to the readers. You are giving them other valuable resources outside of your own site.

We have not discussed this part of your question yet... but it is the potential issue.
If you allow comments then there will be a lot of people trying to use your site as a source of links and that could have you linking out to a lot of bad neighborhoods. You might then find your blog listed on a low-quality SEO's list of "DoFollow Blogs".. and then you will be hit with a landslide of SPAM comments.
(side comment.... this very issue explains why I recently started to post on the SEOMoz Pro Q&A. the forum where I have posted for years allows signature links and that has brought such a large number of trash postings that I burned out over there. That will probably not happen here because signature links are not allowed and the ability to post here must either be paid for or earned. /rant)

Yeah as long as it's relevant and decent stuff then you should definitely link out to it... I link to this site loads.

We make between four and ten blog posts per day and 90% of those posts include a followed link to another website. Our goal is to feature news, developments and good ideas in our topic area. We have no philosophical or SEO problem with linking out. We think that it makes our site a good information source and that attracts links, subscribers and repeat visitors.
The only downside is that we get lots of weasels trying to get a link to their crappy site. However, our goal is to link out to sites that are BETTER than ours.
We also link out on article pages... much like Wikipedia does. Again, we are linking to sites that have great information that is superior to ours in some way. Don't link down, link up.
To answer your original question.... "Do you link out to good content?"
The answer is "NO" . We link out to GREAT content.

I allow links in my blog comments and publish them all the time. I share on facbeook and twitter links to stuff I enjoy as well. If an article has a tweet this button or a share button that makes it all the easier. I also post things I like to my blog from time to time, so yeah, I have no trouble linking to content I enjoy. It's too bad more people don't think that way though, it would make this whole SEO thing a lot easier

I have no problem linking out to good content! In fact, I believe that this can help your SEO. My pages that link out to authoritative stuff that will help the reader seem to do better than ones that do not.

Making the most of a good back link
Hi Guys. We recently acquired a really good backlink from a charity site that has high DA. 71/100 on Open site explorer. I understand traffic is also a key component in a backlinks value, not just the DA. Is it worth spending time and energy (we don't have much as it's the lead up to Christmas) encouraging people onto the blog post to hopefully get some extra traffic through that link? And more generally, how much does traffic effect the value of link? Any insights would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Isaac.

When writing content, is it good to reference wikipedia for some definitions?
Example...we write a unique article about the materials used in our products, giving a more in depth insight into the types of metals and minerals used in the products. Such articles are aimed at a small number of customers that ask more detailed questions about some of our material. In explaining some of these materials, we reference, and credit for, classifications used from the definitions given in wikipedia. The rest of article is ours and unique. Is getting these links from an authority such as wikipedia a good idea? Thank you.

Linking to a pdf
Hi All I have a pdf that people can download from my site, what I want to know is that when people link to the pdf does the pdf share link power to pages linked to from within the pdf (like a html page would) or is the link power being waisted going to the pdf and should I somehow get the links to a normal page? The pdf is a free downloadable resource to people in the party planning industry and so gets linked to quite a bit by sites telling their readers to get the information we provide. Finding links online that already exist as link juice based on search results
I'm curious about this, I can't find anything on the net that talks about it. I wrote an article about it on squidoo and have had no responses so I am thinking this is very rare subject. The question is I have done some backlink research with my competitors with linkdetective.com and found many links (even follow ones) related to sites that provide search results. Here are a link about what I am talking about as an example, I have found many more besides this one. http://search.lphant.com/es/webResults.html?q=free%20scrabble%20dictionary&hl=en&page=1&src=hmp_es&ref=1 My site appears in those results. When looking at the source there is no "nofollow". I found this page because linkdetective.com had this link listed pointing to my competitor. Are these valid backlinks? What I have been doing is adding these links to http://www.google.com/addurl so that Google knows about them. Is there something I am missing or are these valid?

Do links within imbeddable widgets carry link juice?
I'm dipping my toes into infographic design. On of my desired outcomes is to gain links by having other sites embed my graphic. I'm considering using Tableau's interactive data visualization software to do so; thus creating a widget, embedding it on my blog, and including the embed code for others to post. Is it possible to include a juice passing link in such an infographic? I know its possible to include links inside the tableau graphic but not sure if they have straight SEO value. If these links are not juice passing would it be better to go with a simple image link that passes value?

Panda Update: Isn't a link still a link?
I was doing some link building and some SEO's said that the Panda update affected many websites. I am going to use eZineArticles.com as my example. EzineArticles was affected by the Panda update and does not show up in the SERPs as much as before. But they still have doFollow Links coming from the articles I am submitting. QUESTION: Regardless if EzineArticles was affected by the Panda Update, isn't a "Follow Link" still a "Follow Link" OR am I completely wasting my time on this devalued website? Edit: Yes I know a PR 0 page is not as valuable as a PR 9 page. I am asking from the standpoint of the affected Panda Update domains overall.

Do image links with no alt tags pass link value?
"... an image link with no alt tag is useless to search engines..." according to a Nov 2007 seomoz blog post. Is this still the case in 2011? I ask because I'm about to obtain a banner link on a high-traffic site (chiefly for the clickthrough value) but I notice the site uses neither "title" nor "alt" tags.
