Site Explorer, Social Media Count. Am I linking my social media correctly?
-
How do I correctly link my social media pages?
I have link going from my Twitter, Facebook and Google + to my website.
But a quick Open site explorer check says that I have, 0 Facebook Friends, 0 Twitter followers and 0 Google + Followers. Where as in relaity, I have 100 - 1000 follwers on each.
Infact, the hyperlink from my Twitter Profile section doesn't appear as a no follow link atall on an OSE check of my website.
Am I linking social media wrong?

Hey Paul,
Thanks for reaching out.
One quick thing to remember when you're looking at the social metrics on OSE, those are for the URL specifically. They have no correlation to your actual facebook page.
For example: www.seomoz.org had 156 Facebook Likes on OSE, where as our actual facebook page has 79,222. Significant difference there.
I hope that makes sense. It can definitely be confusing if you aren't expecting it.
Cheers,
Joel.edit: fix a word.

Thanks makes a lot of sense, thanks Iain!

Hey Paul,
You are linking your social media profiles correctly. However you have made a small mix-up between Social followers and Social shares & plus 1's. OSE only reports on shares & plus 1's, not followers.
Your Twitter profile link will show in OSE eventually, it just needs to find it (index) it first. This can take several months. Even though SEOMOZ do an amazing job with OSE, they are essentially trying to reverse engineer Google, which is no mean feat, as Google is quite well funded shall we say.
Give it a couple of months and it will show up.
Hope that clears everything up for you.

What link would be better?
Hi Guys, Just wondering what would be better in this instance: finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article or creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Finding an old post (with good authority) and getting a link from that old article Creating a brand new article and adding the link to that. Both naturally link out to the page you want a link too. To me, number 1 as the page already has authority but then again number 2 since Google might place some weight to recency. Any thoughts? Cheers.

Hreflang tag on links to alternate language site
Hey everyone! In the interest of trying to be brief, here's the situation in my favorite form of communication, bullet points! Client has two sites; one is in English and one is in Japanese Each site is a separate URL, no sub-domains or sub-pages Each main page on the English version of the site has a link to the homepage of the Japanese site Site has decent rankings overall, with room for improvement from page 2 to page 1 No Hreflang tags currently used in links to the Japanese version from the English version Given that the site isn't really suffering for most rankings, would this be helpful to implement on the English version? Ideally, I'd like each link to be updated to the corresponding subject matter of the Japanese, but in the interim it seems like identifying to Google that the link on the other side is a different language might be helpful to both the user and to maybe help those rankings on page two creep a little higher to page one. Thanks for reading, I appreciate your time.

Large sites linking to us in their menu
Hello, I am digging in to our in-links in WMT and notice that we have a number of sites that link to us in their menu or every page on their site, making for hundreds of thousands of links to our site. Here is an example:

http://www.askthebookie.com/ (in the topmost right menu there is a link to our forums) http://www.covers.com/postingforum/ There are about a dozen or so sites that link to our homepage tens-of-thousands of times. Should I disavow them, or is this be viewed as a legitimate link? Thanks in advance for any help!0 -
Linking from a corporate site to a brand site.
Is there an SEO impact to a large corporation linking from a corporate and/or a divisional site to a specific brand site with it's own top level domain? We would like to keep the traffic coming, but not if it will be seen as a black hat tactic. My guess is that Google will be smart enough to see that the corporation owns the brand and at least not penalize us, but I am wondering if anyone else has this experience? Google Analytics is calling it self-referral.

Are reciprocal links with a Pandalized site harmful?
Hi, We have a reciprocal link exchange relationship with just 1 website, which is in the same industry as us. They do not have a reciprocal link exchange relationship with any site other than us. Bunches (3-5) of do-follow links to our website appear on approx 2k pages of theirs. We provide several hundred links back to them (1 per page). The links result in some decent traffic exchanged, but nothing significant or getting Pandalized over. Both our sites are in the 60+ domain authority range according to open site explorer. Both of our sites clearly got hit hard by Panda. From a purely SEO perspective, are these reciprocal links hurting us? I have read that Panda has nothing to do with links but I wanted to know if there is a possibly that this may be hurting us. At the time, many years ago, the link exchange seemed to help us rank better. Thanks.

Do nofollow links affect link profile?
I've read that it's good to keep a natural link profile. Some naked links, some links going to our company name, some with anchor text, etc. Do nofollow links affect this link profile, or is it only followed links that are taken into account?

Social Media - big ranks it seems from it
Hi there, one of our big competitors is ranking first for a huge key term. We were wondering how they did it, so i went through normal processes: Age of domain - reasonable. Unique content - a little but the ranking page has pretty much none - meaning panda update isn't applying here, Back-links - nothing special really, not enough to be above everyone in my opinion. Then i had a look at social media shares, over 2,000 mainly as facebook shares. So i went on their facebook profile and it does not seem like they are spamming content on there. Are these shares from users sharing the link? if so can i find out how many per post? i imagine there is a team setup to share this content when it is published on their facebook page? It just seems so very unfair they are ranking number one like this, the content in their site is poor, it's not a relevant domain either. So much for panda update eh? Any thoughts appreciated.
