Duplicate content in Magento
-
Hi all
We got some serious issues with duplicate content on a Magento site that we are marketing.
For example:
http://www.citcop.se/varmepumpar-luft-luft/panasonic/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
http://www.citcop.se/panasonic/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
http://www.citcop.se/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
All of the above seem to work just fine as it is now but since they are excatly the same product they should ofcourse do a 301 redirect to the main page.
Any ideas on how to sort this out in Magnto without having to resort to manual work in .htaccess?
Have a great day

Hi guys
Great suggestions and great comments. Think I got the most sorted out now.
BUT, got one major issue left:
As you can see here: http://www.citcop.se/varmepumpar-luft-luft the links to the actual product is not the same as the canonical URL for it?
Now the links on this page are like:
http://www.citcop.se/varmepumpar-luft-luft/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
When they really should be(this is also the canonical url):
http://www.citcop.se/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
I have setup magento to use a flat catalog structure but seems like the links in menus etc are still pointing to a URL using the complete path with category and all.
Any ideas how to get all links to a product to be the same?
Thanks

You can set that under System > Catalog > Search Engine Optimizations > then set Use Categories Path for Product URLs to No.
That change wont be a problem, because they will redirect and you have already told google this is the canonical page: http://www.citcop.se/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw

It looks like you have the canonical set to this page http://www.citcop.se/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw So you should be good there. That tells the SEs not to worry about the others.
This URL 404s http://www.citcop.se/panasonic/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw
You could 301 the others by going to Catalog > click Add URL Rewrite > then choose Custom in the dropdown. However, it looks like http://www.citcop.se/varmepumpar-luft-luft/panasonic/panasonic-nordic-ce9nke-5-0kw is using the category structure in the URL and the category tree in the left nav. You could use that one as the canonical.
We don't use category paths for product URLs on our site, runs on Magento, so product URLs are flat - domain.com/product-path.html
You can set that under System > Catalog > Search Engine Optimizations > then set Use Categories Path for Product URLs to No.

There are some paid and free extensions available for Magento that should handle 301 redirects without manually editing the .htaccess file. I'm not sure what version of Magento you are using but here are the free ones -

http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/smooth-move-seo-301-redirect-handler-3958.html
You can also manually add the 301 redirects within Magento - http://galathemes.com/magento-news/how-to-add-301-redirection-to-magento-28.html

Duplicate Content for Locations on my Directory Site
I have a pretty big directory site using Wordpress with lots of "locations", "features", "listing-category" etc.... Duplicate Content: https://www.thecbd.co/location/california/ https://www.thecbd.co/location/canada/ referring URL is www.thecbd.co is it a matter of just putting a canonical URL on each location, or just on the main page? Would this be the correct code to put: on the main page? Thanks Everyone!

Duplicate Page Content and Titles from Weebly Blog
Anyone familiar with Weebly that can offer some suggestions? I ran a crawl diagnostics on my site and have some high priority issues that appear to stem from Weebly Blog posts. There are several of them and it appears that the post is being counted as "page content" on the main blog feed and then again when it is tagged to a category. I hope this makes sense, I am new to SEO and this is really confusing. Thanks!

Partially duplicated content on separate pages
TL;DR: I am writing copy for some web pages. I am duplicating some bits of copy exactly on separate web pages. And in other cases I am using the same bits of copy with slight alterations. Is this bad for SEO? Details: We sell about 10 different courses. Each has a separate page. I'm currently writing copy for those pages. Some of the details identical for each course. So I can duplicate the content and it will be 100% applicable. For example, when we talk about where we can run courses (we go to a company and run it on their premises) – that's applicable to every course. Other bits are applicable with minor alterations. So where we talk about how we'll tailor the course, I will say for example: "We will the tailor the course to the {technical documents|customer letters|reports} your company writes." Or where we have testimonials, the headline reads "Improving {customer writing|reports|technical documents} in every sector and industry". There is original content on each page. The duplicate stuff may seem spammy, but the alternative is me finding alternative re-wordings for exactly the same information. This is tedious and time-consuming and bizarre given that the user won't notice any difference. Do I need to go ahead and re-write these bits ten slightly different ways anyway?

Duplicate Content
SEOmoz is reporting duplicate content for 2000 of my pages. For example, these are reported as duplicate content: http://curatorseye.com/Name=“Holster-Atlas”---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158
Technical SEO | | jplill
http://curatorseye.com/Name=âHolster-Atlasâ---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158 The actual link on the site is http://www.curatorseye.com/Name=“Holster-Atlas”---Used-by-British-Officers-in-the-Revolution&Item=4158 Any insight on how to fix this? I'm not sure where the second version of the URL is coming from. Thanks,

Duplicate video content question
This is really two questions in one. 1. If we put a video on YouTube and on our site via Wistia, how would that affect our rankings/authority/credibility? Would we get punished for duplicate video content? 2. If we put a Wistia hosted video on our website twice, on two different pages, we would get hit for having duplicate content? Any other suggestions regarding hosting on Wistia and YouTube versus just Wistia for product videos would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Duplicate Content on Product Pages
Hello I'm currently working on two sites and I had some general question's about duplicate content. For the first one each page is a different location, but the wording is identical on each; ie it says Instant Remote Support for Critical Issues, Same Day Onsite Support with a 3-4 hour response time, etc. Would I get penalized for this? Another question i have is, we offer Antivirus support for providers ie Norton, AVG,Bit Defender etc. I was wondering if we will get penalized for having the same first paragraph with only changing the name of the virus provider on each page? My last question is we provide services for multiple city's and towns in various states. Will I get penalized for having the same content on each page, such as towns and producuts and services we provide? Thanks.

Duplicate Content on Navigation Structures
Hello SEOMoz Team, My organization is making a push to have a seamless navigation across all of its domains. Each of the domains publishes distinctly different content about various subjects. We want each of the domains to have its own separate identity as viewed by Google. It has been suggested internally that we keep the exact same navigation structure (40-50 links in the header) across the header of each of our 15 domains to ensure "unity" among all of the sites. Will this create a problem with duplicate content in the form of the menu structure, and will this cause Google to not consider the domains as being separate from each other? Thanks, Richard Robbins

A site I am working with has multiple duplicate content issues.
A reasonably large ecommerce site I am working with has multiple duplicate content issues. On 4 or 5 keyword domains related to site content the owners simply duplicated the home page with category links pushing visitors to the category pages of the main site. There was no canonical URL instruction, so have set preferred url via webmaster tools but now need to code this into the website itself. For a reasonably large ecommerce site, how would you approach that particular nest of troubles. That's even before we get to grips with the on page duplication and wrong keywords!
