Regular Expression / Wildcard Redirect Situation
-
I am dealing with an interesting situation. Here's what's going on:
Current URLs Example1:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234-1-1.htmlCanonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234.htmlNew URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
Current URLs Example2:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1.html
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10-1-1.htmlCanonical on All Above URLs:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-1234+10.htmlNew URL:
www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789.htmlI want to make sure all variations of the above URL redirect to the new url. What wildcard 301 redirect / regular expression can I use to tackle these ?

Hi Nakul,
Forgive me if this is too simplistic...
The following rewrite rules should cover the examples you provided:
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234.html http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234- http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-4567.html
RedirectMatch 301 red-widgets-cid-1234+ http://www.domain.com/red-widgets-cid-6789.htmlWe just need to escape the special characters (period, hyphen and plus sign).
This should cover the examples you provided, and no need for any elaborate RegEx patterns. Of course, if there are variants your example doesn't mention, things could get more complicated. (I'm also assuming here you're on an Apache environment.)
If I've misunderstood your question or the situation is more complicated than your example demonstrates, let me know.
Thanks,
Mike

Rebranded Website Uses a Forward Slash /at End of URS-Is This Considered a Redirect?
Our website was rebranded and relaunched. The old site did not use a / at the end of the URL. The site uses a forward slash at the end of the URL. My developer claims that this makes no difference, that in Google's eyes this is meaningless. My concern is that link juice will be lost because this necessitates a redirect. Links that were developed in the last few months now are redirected to the identical domain, but with a backslash at the end. Is this something to be concerned about or is it meaningless? Thanks,

Citation/Business Directory Question...
A company I work for has two numbers... one for the std call centre and one for tracking SEO. Now, if local citation/business directory listings have the same address but different numbers, will this affect local/other SEO results? Any help is greatly appreciated! 🙂

Redirecting just the homepage of a site to another domain- good/bad idea?
TLDR: As part of a corporate rebranding/restructuring, my parent company is asking me to redirect just the homepage of our website to another page on their website. How will this affect rankings of all of the other pages on our site? I work for an organization (XYZ Corp) that is owned by another company (Big Conglomerate). XYZ Corp's main function is building custom skinned microsites for marketing purposes that live on our domain in a traditional directory structure (no subdomains). This morning, I get a request to redirect XYZ Corp's homepage to live at bigconglomerate.com/xyzcorp. But all of our original microsites are to remain as is. Technically, I know how to accomplish this redirection. My question is- should I? Or should I fight this? I searched previous Q&A's, but wasn't able to find someone else who was concerned about losing search rankings for sub-pages due to losing their website's homepage. A few more details- The microsite pages are not linked to from the homepage. The microsites do not link back to the homepage. We cannot move the microsites to bigconglomerate.com because everything that lives there is a cookie cutter CMS page. This is my first question ever, please go easy on me! Thanks, --Mark

Redirect help
I work for a company that has a domain that is something like www.neat-stuff.com but most people just use www.neatstuff.com without the dash. The redirect for the homepage works fine. We recently launched a new site and if you use www.neat-stuff.com/category it redirects from the old site to the new site just fine. However if you use www.neatstuff.com/category it does not properly redirect to www.neat-stuff.com/category. How do I fix that?

How to do a wildcard redirect?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I am not a programmer and my client's programmer is asking me how to set this up. Normally I do it in my cPanel, but they can't and need to write it in the .htaccess file. The client's new website was posted at dev.site.com and of course their programmer put robots="index, follow" and so the site is completely indexed. They are launching it tomorrow at www.site.com. I need a wildcard redirect that takes dev.site.com/anything and 301 redirects it to www.site.com/samething if that makes sense. Basically redirects every dev.site.com URL to www.site.com so we don't have duplicate indexation issues. Can anyone tell me the code to do this that needs to go in the .htaccess file? I would just do it through cPanel but that's not an option, so any help is appreciated.

Quoestion about 301 redirect
Hey, I have interesting questions regardin 301 redirect (At least I think it's Interesting:) ) So i have this websites that compares different lenders, url below 🙂 If you go to the homepage then the first thing you see is different loan amounts in 50-99 euro range. Also you can check out different loan amounts like 100-149€, 150-199€, 200-249€ and so on. For now i have used 301 redirect and Noindex and Nofollow for all the different "loan amounts" urls. Examples below etc Is it a good idea to use 301 on all such pages to point to the homepage?
