Google place listings and search results- quick question.
-
Has anybody else noticed that they are ranking better on 'places' yet they have dropped off in the actual search results? We've had no message through webmaster tools. The same seems to have happened to our competitors.

Hi Onlinchester,
You are not the only one. I noticed it too. Only in certain group of keywords, and always if there is a local result.
So it is not the Panda update I think (fortunatelly... or not...)
I also found this article from an agency that noticed the same: http://www.1stonthelist.ca/articles/are-your-organic-listings-being-replaced-with-local-listings/
For now, the CTR in local seems to be better for local than in organic, but I'm surprised. We will see..

Hi Onlinechester,
I believe what you are describing is the quite common phenomenon in which the previous organic rank of a business for a given query is subsumed into a newer local ranking (a ranking in the pack of lettered, pinned results). Since the Venice update in early 2012, it has become uncommon for any single business to have both a local and organic page 1 ranking for any search term. There are exceptions to this, but as a rule, if you've got a local listing, you're unlikely to have a secondary organic one on the same page of the SERPs.
Some marketers have published pieces on managing to achieve a double page 1 ranking for local clients. Here's an article on that topic by Adam Steele:
http://www.nightlitemedia.com/2012/05/organic-and-google-places-ranking-on-page-1/
There's also a good discussion going on about this topic at The Local Search Forum:
I recommend you read both resources and see if what I've written is accurately describing the common phenomenon you are experiencing.
If not, please come back with further details.

We tend to agree with Moosa, "local results" and "organic results" are not linked in anyway. If your local results seem to have fallen off quite a bit, I'd suggest taking a look at your link building activities.
Also run your competitors through opensiteexplorer.com or ahrefs.com, see what they're doing from a link buliding perspective that might have caused them to jump over you.

I personally don’t think that ranking better in places and drop off in normal SERPs have any interaction but this can be the result of latest Panda update (24th) which might affect your niche... I don’t think this is the point of problem... all you have to do is to analyse your website again from SEO perspective and build some links if required.
This kind of thing happen from time to time and the idea is to check your SEO campaigns and fix the problems and you will see a re-gain in SERPs from the desired key phrases

Recovering from a Google penalty
Hi there, So about 3.5 weeks ago I noticed my website (www.authenticstyle.co.uk) had gone from ranking in second place for our main key phrase "web design dorset" to totally dropping off the SERP's for that particular search phrase - it's literally no where to be seen. It seems that other pages of my website still rank, but the homepage. I then noticed that I had an unread alert in my Google Search Console account to say that a staging site we were hosting on a subdomain (the subdomain was domvs.authenticstyle.co.uk) had hacked content - it was a couple of PDF files with weird file names. The strange thing is we'd taken this staging site down a few weeks earlier, BUT one of my staff had left an A record set up in our Cloudflare account pointing to that staging server - they'd forgotten to remove it when removing the staging site. I then removed the A record, myself and submitted a reconsideration request on Google Search Console (which I still haven't received confirmation of) in the hope of everything sorting itself out. Since then I've also grabbed a Moz Pro account to try and dig a little deeper, but without any success. We have a few warnings for old 404's, some missing meta descs on some pages, and some backlinks that have accumulated over time that have hghish spam rating, but nothing major - nothing that would warrant a penalty as far as I can tell. From what I can make out, we've been issued a penalty on our homepage only, but I don't understand why we would get penalised for hacked content if that site domvs.authenticstyle.co.uk no longer existed (would it just be due to that erroneous A record we forgot to remove?). I contacted a few freelance SEO experts and one came back to me saying I'd done everything correctly and that I should see our site appearing again in a few days after submitting the reconsideration request. Its been 3 weeks and nothing. I'm at a huge loss as to how my site can recover from this. What would you recommend? I even tried getting our homepage to rank for a variation of "web design dorset", but it seems our homepage has been penalised for anything with "dorset" in the keyphrase. Any pointers would be HUGELY appreciated. Thanks in advance! Will

Question About Using Disqus
I'm thinking about implementing Disqus on my blog. I'd like to know if the Disqus comments are indexed by search engines? It looks like they are displayed using Ajax or jQuery.

Why is a site search query being returned in SE results
Hello One of my top targeted keywords is now linking to the results page of an internal site search query (the search query is for my site url). Oddly, this page does not contain the targeted keywords. My site url used to be the highest ranking page for my targeted keywords. Can anybody advise why this is happening and how I can change it? Thanks Nick

Why are old versions of images still showing for my site in Google Image Search?
I have a number of images on my website with a watermark. We changed the watermark (on all of our images) in May, but when I search for my site getmecooking in Google Image Search, it still shows the old watermark (the old one is grey, the new one is orange). Is Google not updating the images its search results because they are cached in Google? Or because it is ignoring my images, having downloaded them once? Should we be giving our images a version number (at the end of the file name)? Our website cache is set to 7 days, so that's not the issue. Thanks.

Canonical tags and internal Google search
Quick question: I want some pages that will have canonical tags, to show up in internal results for a Google site search that's built into the site. I'm not finished with the site, but is it correct to assume that pages with canonical will NOT show up in internal site search results, when powered by Google?
