Anyone good at ranking on Yahoo?
-
I don't get Yahoo or Bing these days!
I wrote a story "Did David Wineland and Serge Haroche Steal Idea For The Nobel Physics Prize?"
It is a unique story, sourced from a prince.
It is referenced on many other sites.
It has had about 115,000 pageviews so far. most of those people read 2 or 3 pages.
Do Yahoo or Bing list my story?
No.
They list all the referencing sites, they even list unrelated stories on my site that show that headline in the "top ten stories of the day" widget, but not the story itself.
It has about 1250 shares.
What am I doing wrong?
Is it page structure?

Thank you Cyrus.
I do have Bimg WMT, but I haven't checked out all of thise things.
Thank you, I will.
Google's URL count is a little high now, since I moved a million pages onto subdomains two months ago. They are very slow in releasing the pages I don't want them to have.
As you say, Bing is very low, and I don't understand why that is, because it should be around 96,350

Hi Alan,
It's not uncommon for Bing/Yahoo to vary in search results from other search engines, but the scope of the difference you describe does seem a bit odd.
Although I can't tell you exactly why it isn't ranking there are a few things we can look at:
1. The site is in Bing's cache. That's reassuring. And the last crawl date was pretty recent.
2. To analyze problems, I'd check the site through Bing Webmaster Tools. If you don't have a Webmaster account, I'd take a few minutes to set one up and verify your website. Once you do this the webmaster suite has several diagnostic tools you can take advantage of.
- SEO Analyzer
- Link Explorer - Enter your URL and see if Bing has indexed links to this particular page
- Fetch as Bingbot - See if the Bing crawler discovers any issues when crawling the page
It's pretty common for Bing/Yahoo to index far fewer pages than Google, and indeed you can see the huge different numbers reported for your site
Which seems like a really big difference. Bing does a pretty good job of removing low quality pages from its index, but I can't be certain that's what happening here. It might be worth a look to see what pages are being indexed, what ones aren't being indexed, and finding out what the difference is.
Regardless, hope this helps, if only a little. Best of luck with your SEO!

Is it a good idea to publish a list of players in my industry, including competitors?
I am working with an e-commerce site that does mostly B2B sales in a very commoditized industrial product segment in which very few manufacturers sell direct. It's all done through distributors and resellers, like our site. We don't often win on price, but we do win enough SERP battles to get the visitors and provide great customer service, so we have gained a following and we do compete well for some very large orders. We list several thousand products and in a given month, visitors regularly hit over 1,000 different landing pages. While we make most money from relatively few items, most items are sold only once a year, maybe twice. It's a very longtail business, and therefore tough to do a great job optimizing all pages down the tail. So, one thing I'm doing is building out a set of resource pages with common questions, terminology and other useful bits so the site gains more traffic and authority, in the hope of boosting product pages. e.g., an in-depth category definition in the glossary could link to all the items in a category. In addition to adding content that augments product pages, I'd like to create basically a map of the whole industry, including brand name manufacturers, white label manufacturers, distributors, etc. If it's going to be a truly comprehensive list, it should include my competitors. Given that I have never found such a list, it feels like this could be a good page and earn some links. Since it's unlikely much traffic will even find that page, compared to product pages, are there potential pitfalls I should be aware of? I get the feeling if I create a page that others bookmark and visit when hunting for products in our market, we win, even if most visitors to that page won't buy from us. I've been in this industry for four years now, and it's amazing how hard it is to find some companies. Only a handful even think about SEO, since they sell through other channels. Should I link to all my competitors (which is only about a dozen) among hundreds of other industry links?

Shortened page titles and changed urls to match, will this effect my page rankings?
In my recent crawl, I was given a bunch of 200 errors for having titles too long, i rewrote the titles and changed the URLs to match (using wordpress). I was then informed by my boss that changing the URLs like I did (www.website.com/abc ->www.website.com/xyz) may have changed our page rank for those pages and if so i should revert them to the old urls. There are about 14 titles in total that I made these changes to. Would it be quicker to change the URL's to their old names, or better for me to use 301 redirects to point the old urls to the new ones? Will either renaming the urls of the new titled blogs with their old titles or using 301 redirects have better SEO results? Does wordpress automatically make these redirects for me? When I click a link of the old urls I kept saved in a document it still goes to the page.

Why do other sites rank higher for our blog content?
Our site has always allowed other sites to RSS feed our content. Recently, we've noticed that searches for a title of our blog post will rank 2 sites that only publish said content, while our links are nowhere to be seen on the SERPs for Google. Is there any way I can fix this or prod Google to adjust it for us? Background: We were ranked highly in many long tail keywords, but lost many of them in June 2013. During this time going forward, we received no manual action.

Are Microsites a good idea
I am a plastic surgeon with a website and active blog which has done well over the past 7 years. I use my blog to feature specific procedures such as Breast Augmentation or Tummy Tuck. Should I continue to just use my blog to generate traffic or consider a microsite specific to a procedure? My concern is that google may consider the microsite a black hat technique.

Author Rank - Using the brand as the author
Hi i'm building a new site and want to start building up author rank right from the start. If you are building author rank for a brand, do you think its fine to use the brand as the actual author of the content, instead of a actual person? Or using a stage name rather then a persons actual name, and have your writers write under that particular stage name? Would love to hear peoples opinions. Cheers, Mark

For a consumer facing blog, how often do you recommend updating content to develop good rankings? I understand that it's really dependent upon the niche/competition, but what are some best practices? Content is expensive. Thanks
