Odd URL errors upon crawl
-
Hi,
I see this in Google Webmasters, and am now also seeing it here...when a crawl is performed on my site, I get many 500 server error codes for URLs that I don't believe exist. It's as if it sees a normal URL but adds this to it: %3Cdiv%20id=
It's like this for hundreds of URLs.
Good URL that actually exists
http://www.ffr-dsi.com/food-retailing/supplies/
URL that causes error and I have no idea why
http://www.ffr-dsi.com/food-retailing/supplies/%3Cdiv%20id=
Thanks!

Thanks Mike. I ran the page through the validator, and it came up with quite a few errors. I'm not sure how severe they are, but I will be sending them to my web vendor. I appreciate the help.

Like Mike said, it looks like a coding issue.
It looks like /food-retailing/supplies/food-preparation and /food-retailing/supplies/safety-janitorial are both linking to /food-retailing/supplies/
You can use validator.w3.org to check for some coding errors.
A quick glance at things looks like your /food-preparation page has an open tag in the code lines between 1423-1431:

[]( RIGHT HERE YOU ARE MISSING CODE<br /> <br /> <div id= "Page 2")
[That was just a quick glance.
Hope it helps.

I have a crazy Russian coder who does all of that for me so I'm honestly not 100% sure how to find these errors more easily in order to correct them.
-
Thanks for the fast reply Mike. I don't suppose there is a tool or plugin that could hunt it down that you know of?

Just looking at the URL you posted, it looks like an open DIV tag or an incorrectly closed link in the source causing an html encoding issue.

# in url affecting rank
Hi I am building links to a page www.companyname.com/category.index.php There is also another similar url www.companyname.com/category.index.php#. This page is linked to from the non # page. This is a new client and I'm not entirely sure why that link is there. Am I correct in thinking that these two urls are different in the eyes of the search engines? If so, would some of the link juice to www.companyname.com/category.index.php be transferred to www.companyname.com/category.index.php# and affect the ranking of the non # page? I hope this makes sense! Thanks

Duplicate Page Title Crawl Error Issue
In the last crawl for on of our client websites the duplicate page title and page content numbers were very high. They are reading every page twice. http://www.barefootparadisevacations.com and http://barefootparadisevacations.com are being read as two different pages with the same page title. After the last crawl I used our built in redirect tool to redirect the urls, but the most recent crawl showed the same issue. Is this issue really hurting our rankings and if so, any suggestions on a fix for the problem? Thank you!

Ajax Crawling | Blocked URLs Spike
http://www.zando.co.za/women/shoes/ (for example) Hello, I'm concerned that WMT is reporting a large spike in blocked URLs - now reporting more blocked URLs than good URLs. Our product recommendations get generated via an Ajax call and these autogenerated, unique, URLs are rendered in the /recommendations/ folder which sits in the root of our site: http://www.zando.co.za/recommendations/ I can't see how I can prevent Google from calling the Ajax - I can only assume that's what's happening. This is what the code typically looks like:

How to find original URLS after Hosting Company added canonical URLs, URL rewrites and duplicate content.
We recently changed hosting companies for our ecommerce website. The hosting company added some functionality such that duplicate content and/or mirrored pages appear in the search engines. To fix this problem, the hosting company created both canonical URLs and URL rewrites. Now, we have page A (which is the original page with all the link juice) and page B (which is the new page with no link juice or SEO value). Both pages have the same content, with different URLs. I understand that a canonical URL is the way to tell the search engines which page is the preferred page in cases of duplicate content and mirrored pages. I also understand that canonical URLs tell the search engine that page B is a copy of page A, but page A is the preferred page to index. The problem we now face is that the hosting company made page A a copy of page B, rather than the other way around. But page A is the original page with the seo value and link juice, while page B is the new page with no value. As a result, the search engines are now prioritizing the newly created page over the original one. I believe the solution is to reverse this and make it so that page B (the new page) is a copy of page A (the original page). Now, I would simply need to put the original URL as the canonical URL for the duplicate pages. The problem is, with all the rewrites and changes in functionality, I no longer know which URLs have the backlinks that are creating this SEO value. I figure if I can find the back links to the original page, then I can find out the original web address of the original pages. My question is, how can I search for back links on the web in such a way that I can figure out the URL that all of these back links are pointing to in order to make that URL the canonical URL for all the new, duplicate pages.

Shorter URLs
Hi Is there a real value in having the keywords in the URL structure? we could use the URL: Mybrand.com/software/tablets/ipad/supertrader.html Or instead have the CMS create the shorter version mybrand.com/supertrader.html and just optimize this page for the keyword 'supertrader ipad software'
