Please help me stop google indexing https pages on my wordpress site
-
I added SSL to my wordpress blog because that was the only way to get a dedicated IP address for my site at my host. Now I am noticing Google has started indexing posts both as http and https. Can some one please help how to force google not to index https as I am sure its like having duplicate content. All help is appreciated. So far I have added this to top of htaccess file: RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$
RewriteRule ^robots.txt$ robots_ssl.txt And added robots_ssl.txt with following: User-agent: Googlebot Disallow: / User-agent: * Disallow: /
But https pages are still being indexed. Please help.

Hi Rookie123
Having unique IP's may be of use from an SEO perspective if you have multiple sites that you are interlinking with the hope of boosting SEO. However there is no guarantee that Google will not be able to work out that the sites are still in fact related.
If this is a single stand alone site then I would not worry about having a unique IP as I am not aware of any tangible benefit and would be more focused on resolving the duplicate content issue.
Hope this helps.

Hehe. Some one on DP suggested that.
So are you saying just add this to htaccess
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.sitename.com/$1 [R=301,L]
I am just trying to understand what it actually do? Also I am guessing i will have to deindex already indexed https pages from webmaster tools.

Did you just copy code from Digital Point or have SEOmoz started putting ads in?
The nofollow should in theory stop bots wandering around the https version once they're on there, so can't hurt.
I think you're best redirecting the https version though if you don't need it at all.
-
Barry,
I will try that also. Also wanted to ask you what you think about adding following to the template.
if ($_SERVER['HTTPS'] = "on") { echo 'content="noindex, nofollow">'; }

Can you just redirect the https to the http version?
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} =on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [R=301,L] -
Its a wordpress site and actually I do not even have a single page that needs https.
I am also thinking of just getting rid of ssl from my site. I added it to have a unique IP for my site cause I had heard it helps with SEO but I think the issues outweigh the benefits.
What do u think is better, do these code changes or just get rid of SSL? -
The problem here is you've not told the robots to noindex the https version, you've simply said they're not allowed to crawl it, but if they see a link go to there they know it exists in some capacity. What you need is the robots noindex tag on all these pages.
If you have some way of differentiating the https pages in your template then you just need to add
to the header.
If you can't then you can try to do it by putting this bit of php in your header
if ($_server['https] == "on") {
echo ";
}?>
I would guess there's some dangers in that doing bad stuff to your site, so make sure and test it. If it appears on all your pages take it off immediately!

SEO Questions & Help
I have a woo commerce shop in the firearms industry which makes advertising even more difficult because no FB, IG, or Google campaigns. I do have other sources of advertising but I'm a complete noob when it comes to SEO and the like. I know it exists and its important and that's the extent of it. I was thinking of hiring someone on Upwork to take care of this on my website but what kinds of questions/things I should look out for to keep from getting scammed? Any tips would be appreciated

Guest blog on my web site.
**I received this email from a lady who wishes to write articles and post them on my site under my news section . Ok, if its quality I dont mind hiring somebody to create a post. Her proposal is as follows and this is her email :-**Basically what I can offer is to write a couple of articles for your News section, something fun and interesting for your visitors which will hopefully drag some traffic your way. I could make them well suited to your site and I could include in each a link to a client of mine - one who wants to be exposed on a good site like yours - and for doing that I can offer you compensation of £33 for each client link - 1 per article. For example, one client is Watches of Switzerland, so I could write an article about ideal wedding gifts for a groom maybe, or something about a perfect Honeymoon destination like Switzerland, and slip a link in there. Other clients include Weddingsite and Lampcommerce - which could be included in something about making a matrimonial home. There are a few stipulations I would need to abide by, like - the article would need to be 500 words, it would need the link to be a 'do follow' link, it would need a picture or two, and it would need a couple of 'sacrifice links' (just links to Wikipedia or something to make it more Google friendly). Question. Is this what a guest article is ? and also is the format ok ? Sorry if this seems a dumb question but still learning guys . King regards to everyone Peter

Does Google Dislike Slideshows?
I've noticed a recent drop in organic traffic and a slight dip in rankings. When I looked at who replaced us in the top spots, I noticed text heavy, in depth articles. We produce many articles in the slideshow format. Do you think this is the reason our rankings dropped?

I allow authority sites to republish my blog articles, which then outrank me
Hey everyone. This is my first question here, I apologize if it has been covered before. I have a health and nutrition blog [authority nutrition] that has been up since December 1st, 2012. I've managed to write quite a few viral articles which have given me a bunch of natural links and a domain authority of 49, which I think is pretty great for such a new site. Haven't done any link building and everything is 100% white hat. Getting good rankings and good traffic already, so I can't complain. My only (1st world) problem is that sometimes major authority sites (DA of 70-95) republish my content. I always say yes if they ask me first, but some of them just republish without even asking. My articles are always indexed on my blog before they get republished, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. These sites always clearly link to the original URL, but they often tend to outrank me for the keywords I was targeting in the articles. They tend to rank in the top 5, but my original article is nowhere to be found. I plan on continuing to allow these sites to republish as I get powerful links and good traffic from them, but it's a bit frustrating that I don't seem to get the credit as the original source. I've already set up Google Authorship, but it doesn't seem to help. Is there anything I can do to make sure Google recognizes my article as the original and chooses to rank my site instead of the authority site that simply republished my article?

What are the best widgets to use on Wordpress? And what is most useful on Wordpress for content syndication?
We are in the process of researching the best plugins and widgets for our clients' blogs. It appears that SEO by Yoast is most popular for 2013 so far. Any recommendations on which widgets we should be using or plugins for content syndication? If we use something like the Jetpack plugin, would this do the trick?

Google RSS Feed News Feed To Inner Pages
Ive been working on a large ecommerce website that has thousands of pages, although we are working on adding custom content daily to the largest pages, we have "defaul content" with dynamic tags matching search query. Someone recommend we add a google Rss feed where they can also add some type of tag. Is this a bad idea? Ive asked in the past but my main concern is issue with duplicate content, It would be next to impossible to have all pages filled with custom content. Any help much appreciated!! Thank you!

Using Google Blogger
Hi, On my website I have a specific blog section, which like most people is linked to Wordpress. I have been advised that to achieve better SEO its also a good idea to use Google Blogger, because it will link back to your website from Google. Obviously we don't want to submit the same articles to Google blogger or else that would be duplicated, but is this something that could benefit and is anyone else doing this? Thanks!
