Is it still best practice to optimize your site with geographic long tail keywords?
-
Since Google is tailoring search results to user IP and location, is it still best practice to optimize your site titles etc. with long-tail geographic keywords? For example, instead of optimizing a page for "dentist in West Palm Beach, Florida", search users who are IN West Palm Beach can just search "dentists" and a list of local dentists will be displayed (both in the local listings AND organic search listings). I'd love to see Rand cover this on a Whiteboard Friday!

Hi Ricky,
Absolutely, when working with local businesses like dentists, you should be specifying their location in many areas of their website. These might include title and meta description tags, alt tags, link anchor text, on-page content, and schema-encoded NAP (name, address, phone number) on the footer and contact page of the website. Of course, do this in a non-spammy manner - as Wesley mentions - stuffing is neither necessary nor desirable. Your brick-and-mortar clients will typically be hoping for inclusion in Google's local results for the city in which they are physically located. Google will show these results both to searches who are in that city or who are including that city in their search term. For SABs (service area businesses like plumbers and carpet cleaning companies), again, the client should aim for local inclusion for the city where they are physically located, but organic inclusion for their service cities where they aren't physically located. This is how it typically works.

Optimizing the page with geographic long tail keywords is still best practice.
Google does display local search results based on IP adress when they have access to the location data of the given person.I would still recommend using the location based keywords as long as you don't keyword stuff your texts.
Hope i answered your question

Should I use location in keywords in a campaign?
We're setting up 25 campaigns for clients and many of the keywords in each are identical. Rather than creating a keyword with a specific location for each client (pool builder san francisco), would it be more effective to use only "pool builder" as the keyword and then set the location for the San Francisco area? I'm concerned that we are going to run out of our keyword allotment since many of our clients have multiple locations.

Accurate Google Keyword Ranking for a domain
Hi Folks, SEO N00b here, in a new job so please go easy on me if i ask stupid questions. I'm looking for some clarification on Google Keyword rankings. I am looking for accurate Google Keywords rankings as when I log into Google Webmaster Tools I am given values like (6-10) for a ranking? When I used SEOMoz (Research Tools -> Keyword & Ranking -> Rank Tracker) it gives me an even less accurate range by simply saying >#50?Why is SEOMoz giving a completely useless metric? Why is its actual rank not shown? I know rankings are becoming less useful as a metric with Google moving toward personalized search but I still have reports to deliver to clients so the conversation of what metrics are going in the report is to be had another day. Right now I just want to get accurate rankings, from what I've found online Google Webmaster tools is recommended as the de-facto ranking tool but it doesn't provide accurate results so how can that be (yes I know it averages out the ranking but 6-10 is a range of values not a single value that represents an average) Dave

Finding all search terms/keywords
Hi everyone! Is there a report I can run on SEOMoz that will show all of the search terms that people are using to find my site? I want to analyze where I am doing well and where I can use some work, but I'd like to have that as a starting point. Thanks in advance!

Results of keyword rankings way off??
I just did my first crawl, and a bunch of the keywords show my rank as being like 76 or 102 and I'm number 1 for the search when I search manually. **I of course have personal results turned off and I'm not logged into gmail when I search.

What kind of keyword difficulty should I be aiming for when launching an new site?
I know that words in their 20's or 30's would be ideal, but it's proving hard for me to find relevant keywords with such scores (just a couple with scores in the 30's). Is going for words between 40-50 a waste of time? Thanks.
