Hit by Penguin 2.0
-
Hi,
The site I'm working on seems to have been suffered from the Penguin 2.0 algorithmic update. It used to rank at position 1 for its top traffic term (which is very competitive) but now ranks at position 12. The traffic seems to have dropped since 22nd May 2013 when the update rolled out.
There aren't any dodgy backlinks to the site. The only two things that changed just a month before Penguin 2.0 were –
- The meta title, description and H1 of the site’s homage changed
- The site received about 30,000+ backlinks from its parent site which sits on a different domain. These links were as a result of the site being included as part of the parent site’s main navigation which appears site wide. The parent site is a reputed and authority site. So I don’t understand why Google would penalise the site for acquiring links from its parent site (even though they are site wide links). Also, the links acquired from parent's site were not just homepage links but also links to some of its other deeper pages.
Can somebody please suggest if they've had any similar experience and suffered the Penguin 2.0’s wrath?
Any suggestions or solutions, most welcome. Should I be thinking of nofollowing those links? Should I submit a reconsideration request to Google?
Many Thanks
Pri

Hi, I would not go as far as to make a request to Google for reconsideration simply because you don't know if you have no way of knowing if you have been affected by a manual penalty or not.
Sign up for Google Webmaster tools if you haven't already. And then make sure that they do and index of your entire site. I believe they would then send you the penalty immediately if they had assessed one to your website.
You're linking through two domains are you doing it for any other reason aside from the links?
If yes there is I'm doing this for any other reason other than to help and users then unfortunately Google will frown on the actions I do not know how relevant the first site is to the second site. So I would not be able to tell you if it is maybe because the second site is not relevant in all the first site which could be completely spam free
I would check the relevancy of the back links from the parents like to the new site and make sure that there are 100% relevant and at least helpful to that website that will tell you if you have an issue or not.
-
Thanks Gerd. Yes, that's what I feel as well but the timing of traffic drop coincides with the Penguin rollout.
Unfortunately, we didn't have Google Webmasters set up for that site so have missed out on important notifications from Google.
I'm thinking whether sending a reconsideration request to them is going to do any good or not.
-
Thanks Thomas for taking your time in responding to this. The parent domain hasn't seen any changes and as I mentioned earlier, the parent site is an authority site and a reputed domain so I don't see the links from that domain as spammy. So not sure if I should be removing those links as they are there for convenience of our customer so we shouldn't really have to remove them just because the linking is between two separate domains. I take your point of contacting Google for reconsideration though.
-
If none of the back links are dodgy and if you say. Or bad. I would strongly suggest that you explained to Google how you got 30,000 links in one day. I'm sure that could trigger a response like this. Remember they are not always 100% correct every time
It is definitely worth going through those 30,000 back links and making sure that the anchor text is the way it should be along with the ratio of good to bad links
Changing your age one tag I do not believe would create this type of trouble for you. I do suggest paying for a month of

The $249 seems to be what I remember as you can see I said under $300. However maybe their prices have gone up I do not know. This seems like a pretty good deal and I would at least give them a call
Or calling them up and actually asking them to do a quick evaluation on your website. Believe it or not they're actually extremely helpful with that. And the price of the tool if you use it is under 300 a month. I know that's not dirt cheap however this will give you a lot very good information in my opinion on what is and what is not a good link in Google eyes.
If you can do it evaluation with that tool and with 30,000 links it will separate the good from the bad for you very quickly as opposed to using open site Explorer and having to go one by one.

I don't believe that the parent backlinks have caused a drop in ranking. My first port of call would be to check Google Webmaster toolkit to ensure that you do not have any errors as part of the crawling or indexing.
I would also check keywords via SEOMoz and would then analyse who (and possibly why) took over the top ranking spots. The nofollow will not help you and the backlink removal also not (unless you have received backlinks of non-reputable sources).

PS
Hi Pri,
I am sorry I did not get any opportunity to paste everything I had written into this. Can you tell me first have you received the penalty for the parent domain as well as your current domain?
We are talking about two domains correct just wanted to be sure sorry for all the questions
If you know follow links it is effective in certain circumstances and others it is completely ineffective. For instance if you started a new domain and wanted to 301 redirect with a no follow or 302 redirect this would not help you.
If you have the ability to know all of these links I would strongly recommend deleting them instead of no following them Google is going to look at it and essentially assess all the issues and unfortunately they are not very forgiving with these things. Unless it looks like you put in a lot of hard work and trying to terminate the links that they had asked you to get rid of it will be very hard to get the penalty removed.
I have done for these so far and I can tell you in all honesty I don't envy your position. It is truly a long work and Google want you to show the work almost like in math class if you could figure it out you're head that got you in trouble because "you didn't show your work" by putting it down on paper.

Hi Pri,
First off let me say I'm sorry to hear that you're having to deal with this.
There is a tool called http://www.removeem.com
This is made by a company that is endorsed by Moz called http://www.virante.org
So I know it's a quality company. I have had some success myself and helping clients remove links prior to asking Google to disavow the ones that cannot you removed at all. With this tool.
I hope this will help shed some light on the issue. In addition this has a full-service option as well as a do-it-yourself option. My opinion would be to lean towards the full-service option where you have www.virante.org essentially helping you.
Other fantastic firms for this http://distilled.net , http://www.portent.com , http://www.seerinteractive.com & http://Internetmarketingninjas.com
I know this is never a fun thing to do and it is not inexpensive to do it the right way nor is it anything you can do overnight. However I do strongly recommend using a firm that knows what they're doing when you do this. Because Google is so finicky about who they actually release from their penalties.
Please let me know if I can be of any more help to you. I am sorry that you're going through this.
Sincerely,
Thomas

Does Penguin Help Negative SEO?
With negative link targeting seeming to become more and more of a ‘standard practice’ for more and more agencies and freelance SEOs (I, for one, have had to use the disavow tool far more than I ever thought I would) and the fact that there are more “link building services” that really only build ‘crap’ links than there were when that type of link building worked, I am honestly a bit afraid that Google is really just pushing SEO’s to the ‘dark side’ or at least handing black hat link builders a great tool for bringing down the competition. I had one SEO actually say to me “If my client can’t recover than at least I can target everyone that jumped ahead of them and only spend around $300 on bad link building”. This came from someone I NEVER thought would say anything of the sort and really got me to thinking’ “will this be the future of SEO?” I know the answer is no but still, it seems more and more people are just throwing their hands up and targeting competition rather than working on their own websites and with updates like Penguin I am afraid that more of my time will be spent disavowing links than building them.

Penguin 2.0 Update - Just Hit - Google Messes up again, can anyone on SEOMOZ please tell me why or how some of these websites are ranking?
I am getting a bit tired now writing all of this so please excuse grammar and spelling mistakes, I wanted to post this up quickly tonight so I could possibly get some feedback by morning. So I feel I figured out some of the new update that just hit and I am sure the update will continue to keep coming and rankings will most likely change for a while, but I do have a few questions in the mean time if they stay. Please look below, why would some of those sites be ranking? Some sites utilize no onpage SEO, some no backlinks, one of the sites is a single page site and every page is a broken link even the contact us page and it's rank 1..... I am not 100% sure that Google got this one right. I see many instances below where other sites are much higher quality and have more authority. It's as if Google took terrible sites and said here is a site for you, now deal with it and I hope it works out at the top. I do see several sites that belong on the first page, but I see others that are very questionable. This is how the following is written below. Before the url is the anchor text density % for the site. This indicates the percentage of the amount of times the anchor text was backlined versus other anchor texts they used. Issues with the sites. Most of these sites don't utilize onpage SEO and it's clearly not a factor for onpage density purposes, there is a site with 37% keyword density on it. Some sites even have broken links. Please note: I already know that there is a lot of data that is analyzed to determine rankings more than this, but PA/DA is suppose to be a major factor according to everyone that believes in SEOMOZ.org. So I am taking in account for many of those factors being calculated due to this. These are just some random keywords I picked, because I know you need to analyze other SEO firms after and update to figure out what lasted and what didn't. All of my sites lasted due to ethical tactics, but I had some rankings move down and others go up, very odd. Is big Penguin update on its way
Just wondering, whether these updates have got anything to do with the next and the biggest Penguin update - Penguin refreshes and the launch of Disavow Option seems to be a bit correlated. It appears that Google might be testing its algo and the Disavow Link is launched so that website owners who might feel frustrated that their websites are wrongly affected can use this tool to exonerate from the penalty. Any thought?

Anyone drawn a Google Penguin?
Just a bit of light relief in the world of SEO. Hey SEO people are funny and can laugh as well 🙂 Our SEO team has had a go at drawing some penguins and the results are funny to us as they are so childlike. Anyone else fancy adding their drawing to the flicker group. This is just a bit of fun for us all! http://www.flickr.com/groups/googlepenguincartoons/

How good is Guest post after Penguin Update ?
Hello 🙂 , You agree or not but 90% of guest posting is done for Link Building, we have seen several blogs on SEOMoz or more trusted SEO Sites that talk about Guest blogging. Everyone recommends guest posts with good content (Unique ofcourse) , valued content & linking to related websites. I have been doing Guest posting for many of my clients but from last 2 months, we got good success too (That is most of our content was approved) . Our writers did great job writing quality content, authoritative subject, providing do's & don'ts, tips, pros - cons etc. Though I have been trying to link to our direct URL instead of anchor text, or long words or name of our business not our main kws, just to be on safe side from Google. Sites where we posted guest post were minimum home page rank of 2 & seomoz's domain authority 30+ , so we know that our guest posts are not on junk sites or blogs. To be honest we have received around 35 guest blogs in one month (All unique content, never spun) linked on above topics, anchor links like I said above - other than that we have not done too fancy for link building, we paid attention to our social media, brand building, inbound marketing recommended by rand fishkin http://goo.gl/64VB5 & we never participated to buy link, buy guest post, buy any likes on fb etc... Still our ranks are not improved actually our ranks has dragged back, we have been doing SEO from last 4 yrs but we never did black hat, our website content is 10 times better than websites in front of us, our titles are unique and advice to human, but our competitors ahead in ranks talk to engines. Our website is up & running from 1993. That is too old and our service is top class. We used to rank well in most competitive words for yrs but new websites came in and started to outrank us. Now situation is this that - websites ahead of us are brands or microsites. I understand Google favors brands but that doesn't mean we are doing anything against Google. We have been practicing guest blogs from yrs but frequency was less. Now question is - Is Guest post worth, bz it is for link (ofcourse with good content) and Google say don't work for link. This is big dilemma We make good content and we need credit for that and link is credit which everyone wants. After penguin update things has started more worse than before. So modified question is - Is guest post worth after penguin update ? Thank you for taking time to read this & I look forward for ongoing discussion on this & I hope leading industry people will participate here, especially those talks and post about guest blogs. -Sunny.

Huge Hit and Bouncing Rankings Since Panda 3.3 Update?
Has anyone else seen rankings bouncing all over the place since the end of Feb? A client's site is for the term hcg which I know is controversial but we were in 3rd or 4th for the past couple of months until this update. Now for the term "hcg" the rankings are bouncing from the twenties to over 100 multiple times a day. I check them throughout the day with non personalized search, rank checker, etc to just try and keep updated. I have never seen rankings bounce around so much after an update and am wondering if this update is somehow effecting these more controversial search terms. Since The end of Feb our traffic has almost dropped in half due to the drop in just the "hcg" term ranking We have been cleaning up the site, updating lower quality content, blogging frequently and trying to build better links for the past couple months of working on the site. The problem is there have been a few other previous SEO companies that worked on the site and I don't know how much black hat tactics were used. Any insight or suggestions on this would be appreciated, we are all scrambling to try and recover from this.
